DAL December General Meeting Demo Artist Deb LaFogg Docherty Deb LaFogg-Docherty’s art combines her great two loves: love of nature & love of painting. She has been studying wildlife in it’s natural habitat since she was a child on her family’s farm in CT. Whenever she had a chance she would draw & paint about wildlife. Her paintings strive to give people a glimpse of how animals live in the wild, raise their young, court & survive. She paints a picture of a secret world that many never get a chance to see. Deborah’s quest to paint wildlife has taken her across the U.S. from the Everglades National Park to Denali National Park. It has become an adventure she loves to share. Her pastel paintings, Couch Potato and Woodstorks, have won Honorable Mentions in the Animal & Wildlife category (juror Aline Ordman) of the 16th Annual Pastel 100 Competition. Images of the winning paintings are slated to appear in the April 2015 issue of Pastel Journal! Woodstorks won First Place in the Women Artists of the West Going Wild Online Wildlife Art show! DAL Autumn Showcase Winners

Here is a thoughtful note from our Judge: Genia Howard:

"It is an honor serve as juror of the November exhibit by the Delray Art League. It is also a pleasure. I value work that surprises or amuses me. Or maybe it astounds me with technical mastery while representing an uncommon subject. Rather than seeking a balanced show, I attempt to recognize the strongest work, whether it is cutting edge or traditional. When we exhibit our art, we select the best of our recent work and share it to be viewed by others. A juror may award it or not. Nevertheless, the artists in this exhibit should be reminded that they are in an association of serious, accomplished artists. This group has evolved well beyond merely local hobby artists. Members compete at the state, national and international level. You are in very good company. Some of the paintings here have obvious visual impact with bold applications and concepts, while others are very subtle and merit lengthy study. I viewed each painting multiple times. Composition, design, concepts, technical expertise and unique personal points of view have been incorporated to produce a fine exhibition to mark the beginning of an exciting season. Awarded work exemplifies the best of these attributes.Congratulations to all exhibitors." Genia Howard

Quotes shared from Bob Birkenes: Art is a harmony parallel with nature. (Paul Cezanne), An art which isn't based on feeling isn't an art at all... feeling is the principle, the beginning and the end; craft, objective, technique all these are in the middle. (Paul Cezanne) Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. (Pablo Picasso) When we discovered Cubism, we did not have the aim of discovering Cubism. We only wanted to express what was in us. (Pablo Picasso) To draw, you must close your eyes and sing. (Pablo Picasso) Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. (Pablo Picasso).
