Our goal at Delphi AcademyTM is simple. We want to educate our students so that they know what they need to know to be successful, and can competently use it. Knowledge opens doors for students, and competence gives them confidence for the future.

We are part of the Delphi Schools Network, a nationwide association of private schools utilizing very effective teaching methods and an extraordinary curriculum. The program is built around a personalized approach that ensures each student gains real competence in academics and life. The basics come first. All Delphi students, no matter at what level they start, become well grounded in reading, writing, mathematics and study skills. Whether they are children entering school for the first time, students who may have some difficulty or those that are flying along, all students achieve solid proficiency in their basics.

Our approach is geared to the individual. Each student begins Delphi with a program tailored to his or her level, then progresses through it rapidly. All along the way, students are both helped and challenged. We want to see our students grow, stretch, reach higher and farther, and get prepared to be successful in life.

Our academic standards are high. Students should be able to absorb all of their education — not some or most, but 100%. We don’t believe in passing students on to the next level without fully making it in the previous one.

Teachers work with students to ensure they really understand, and can use what they have studied. It can take a little longer at first, but it pays off. The Delphi experience culminates not just in educated students, but in students who have mastered the process of education for themselves. Our graduates can go on to the secondary schools of their choice. Wherever they go, we ensure they leave us with confidence about what they know, and the ability to apply their education to life.

Our Approach: Focus on the Individual

In the Classroom What makes Delphi truly unique is how students are taught. Classrooms are not lecture halls, but centers of learning and activity in which each child is busily working, intent on study. With the aid of checksheets—the step-by-step study guide designed for each subject taught—teachers are free to circulate within the class. Given our low student-to-teacher ratios, teachers are able to motivate students, help them over rough spots, provide resources, and ensure each student gets the specific help and attention needed. Small seminar-type classes are included to increase group interaction

and communication. Practical exercises are interspersed throughout the academic day to make sure students connect their studies with real life.

A Technology of Study Our basic assumptions are that within every child is an innate desire to learn and gain knowledge, that learning is inherently a pleasurable process, and that the only reason a child feels otherwise is because there is something not understood. That something could be a word, it could be an action, or it could just be, “How does this apply to me?” American writer and educator L. Ron Hubbard

recognized these pitfalls and identified basic barriers which prevent a student from learning. To help overcome these barriers, and ensure a student could truly put his or her education to use, Hubbard developed what he called Study Technology. Because Study Technology provides simple tools by which any subject can be understood, every Delphi student begins by getting a firm grasp of it. The curriculum has been developed with this effective technology as its foundation.

Individual Attention—Individual Program Students are not all the same, and don’t all start at Delphi on the same footing. Each arriving student is given a carefully designed program based on age, personal interests, and specific strengths and weaknesses. Teachers work closely with their students, keeping them flying through the curriculum and developing as individuals. Difficulties are addressed quickly. Our goal for students is that they are not only progressing with understanding, but are mastering new subjects, life skills and abilities that will serve them in higher education and in life.

“An educational program which begins with the child’s parents, progresses through kindergarten and grade school, through high school and into college and preserves at every step the individuality, the native ambitions, intelligence, abilities and dynamics of the individual, is the best bastion against not only mediocrity but any and all enemies of mankind.”

A Curriculum that Ref ects Life The Delphi curriculum is a rich and comprehensive course of study available for K-12 that has been extensively researched, developed, and piloted by Delphi Schools, Inc., then published by Heron Books. Delphi Academy of Campbell presently offers Kindergarten through the 8th grade. New research and development assures that the curriculum keeps up with our constantly changing world.

A complete mastery of academic basics forms the core of the curriculum, accompanied by hands-on activities, field trips and a wide spectrum of skills and experiences in cultural, literary, scientific, technological, historical and social subjects. Physical education is provided daily at every level and Delphi students enjoy a healthy balance of indoor and outdoor activity. In addition to traditional academic subjects, all students are trained in practical skills such as communication, manners, computers, nutrition and organization. Ethics, logic and research, often considered advanced topics, are not only offered but are begun early on. The foreign language taught

is Spanish. Students build simple vocabulary in Kindergarten and are able to hold conversations on various subjects by the time they graduate Middle School.

The Basics—Literacy First-time readers are brought through our phonetics-based program so smoothly they develop a great enthusiasm for reading from the very beginning. Delphi students learn to read in great volume, often over 150 books per year. Grammar, writing, spelling and other essential tools of language are thoroughly addressed so that students learn to express themselves well.

The Basics—Numeracy Numeracy is the mathematical equivalent of literacy. It means fluently using numbers and numerical concepts, a critical skill in today’s high-technology world. Parallel to their daily math studies, students practice mental math using our Math Facts on the Computer program. Delphi’s math program builds skills in problem solving, logic and an expansive math vocabulary.

Field Trips Field trips are another way for students to connect what they’re studying with real life. Our younger students have weekly trips to locations that coincide with themes

they are learning in the classroom. Older students venture out twice a month to see a play, attend a science seminar, or even travel to Sacramento for a tour of the capitol. Our central location in the heart of Silicon Valley provides exposure to the cutting edge of technology.

The Delphi Curriculum ensures all students get a complete education of real-life skills as well as academics. Our intention is that students learn to make the connection between themselves, their education and the rest of the world.

Achieving 100%In developing Study Technology, L. Ron Hubbard found that having even a little uncertainty in a subject can sometimes add up to serious difficulties later. We want our students to have the benefit of their entire education. That means our goal is that a student understands 100% of what he studies, and it is the job of the Standards Division to ensure this occurs. Students go to Standards for examinations after each course to check for thorough understanding, and the ability to put to use what was studied. Anything missed is thoroughly corrected before the student pro-gresses further.

Filling In The HolesSome students arrive at Delphi with one or two “holes” in their existing education. They might have done poorly in history, or didn’t quite understand something in math, or have had trouble in writing. When these holes surface, we help the student sort out the basic problems, then put together an individualized program to fill in the missing pieces. With a combination of classroom work and some one-on-one help, students can fully stabilize their educational foundation. That will mean fewer difficulties as they roll through the rest of the curriculum.

Instilling Personal ValuesGrowing up today can be very tough. The line between what is “right” and what is “wrong” has become so blurred that children can have a hard time making the distinction themselves. We see parents becoming frustrated when the messages from all sides — peers, the media, the world of entertainment — seem to imply that everything is relative, that there is no right way to live or right way to behave. We understand their concern. A practical understanding of ethics and integrity is not only a part of our curriculum, it is an essential element. As part of their Delphi experience, students work with each other, with faculty and with their parents to develop and practice their

ability to have judgment in determining right and wrong. Maintaining high standards gives Delphi students an important yardstick by which they can measure achievement.

Contribution & CommunityDelphi students learn to become good citizens and to appreciate the value of the community around them. Opportunities to “give back” occur throughout the school year, from food drives, to park clean-ups, to special projects with the city. These projects give students invaluable experience in organization, follow-through and community. Work projects teach them new, practical skills and give results they can be proud of.

Our Standards: Certainty & Citizenship

“I have learned enough at Delphi to educate me for a lifetime. Every year I walk out a bigger and better person. I have uncovered skills and abilities I never knew existed in myself. I have actually begun to prefer school to my weekend idleness. Anybody who walks out of Delphi after completing the academic program is definitely ready to take on the world.”

Looking back on the best parts of their own education, adults will often recall a dynamic teacher that brought a subject to life, or a class activity that illuminated a concept in ways simple book-learning could never achieve. Our approach seeks to give students these kinds of memorable learning experiences every day. With an excellent balance of theory study to practical experimentation, indoor studies to outdoor adventures, and individual research to group collaboration, the curriculum is geared to engage students in every subject and create a love of learning.

The Science Laboratory Faculty in the science department are passionate about science and technology, and adept at coaching students through laboratory experiments that demonstrate simple and abstract principles. Our science program also develops observational skills, accuracy and an understanding of standard procedure and the scientific method. The school features two laboratories—one for physics experiments, replete with a workbench and tools, and another for chemistry and biology, with microscopes, bunsen burners, lab tables and other equipment.

Visual Arts Studio Students from every class visit the art studio on a weekly basis, if not more. Art faculty introduce students to a variety of media and artistic ways to express ideas. Students may learn about a famous artist or period of art and practice with the media and methods of those times. Student art is often displayed in the school or at special events as part of a school gallery.

Performing Arts The essence of art is communication, and we encourage student creativity in all aspects of performance and exhibition. Every student participates in musical and theatrical productions held at various times through the year. Local artists and artisans are invited on campus to teach seminars, and students visit artist’s studios and museums as well as attend workshops and theatrical performances in the community.

Physical Education & Athletics Physical education is a daily activity at Delphi. Younger students master large motor skills in gymnastics and learn playground games while older students focus on team sports and their related skills. The program includes general physical fitness, running, soccer,

basketball, volleyball, flag football, baseball and more. Students interested in competitive play can join the Delphi Dragons team and play against other private schools in the area. Our facilities include an indoor gymnastics room with a traverse rock climbing wall, two large gymnasiums equipped with basketball hoops and volleyball nets, a track, tennis courts, handball court and numerous fields.

Beyond The School After School Activities offer extra-curricular activities such as chess, dance, robotics, etc. Monthly community service days find students and families helping local parks and museums.

Practical Actions: Learning Outside the Classroom

“The ethics, research and communication skills I learned at Delphi have helped me tremendously both as a songwriter and musician, and now as a recording artist... I am so glad that I completed the program at Delphi. It was hard work, but it gave me a wonderful foundation for life.”

More Than A Summer CampSummer is the perfect time to give Delphi Academy a try. Most of our regular school year curriculum is available to summer students, but we also spend time during the warm summer weeks just having fun.

Academics Summer is a great time for kids to sharpen up their study skills, brush up on subjects where they can use extra help, advance themselves in existing studies or explore new interests. Younger campers take advantage of our early-reading program offered during summer. In fact, some of our children have learned to read for the very first time during their Summer Session at Delphi Academy. Campers can choose from a wide variety of courses offered and have the benefit of working closely with our experienced, year-round faculty. Campers generally study in the morning hours and have afternoons free for activities and fun.

Fun The other part of summer at Delphi is fun. Students are given a wide selection of afternoon activities from which to choose. While each summer is different, students may build a

mechanical horse, play badminton, try rock climbing or direct and film a short movie.

Swimming is always a part of Delphi’s summer, as are weekly day trips for all students. Younger students may go to the beach, the San Francisco Zoo or pick berries at an organic farm. Older students might go watersliding, horseback riding or try archery.

Camping Trips Our summer camping trips are a favorite among students. We offer trips for each age level, with popular destinations being Butano State Park, Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. No matter what the age or interest, Delphi Academy brings together learning and fun to give all the campers a summer to remember.

Algebra Camp Qualified students in Middle School can sign up for Algebra Camp, an intensive half-day summer program that delves in to a student’s math education and prepares them to succeed in Algebra. Each child’s program is personalized to their needs and abilities. Students that are ready can progress rapidly through much of Algebra I, while students that have some holes in their foundation can repair those holes and get introduced to algebraic concepts.

Summer Session: Where Learning and Fun Meet
