Mineral Processing

Traditionally JKTech has focused on the research outcomes from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), with key areas in comminution, classification and flotation. Consulting in these areas has provided many operations with significant improvements in plant throughput, grade and recovery as well as substantial decreases in operating costs.

Comminution circuit design and optimisation

JKSimMet is the world-standard for analysing and optimising comminution circuits and includes mathematical models of various comminution and classification devices resulting from more than four decades of research at the JK Centre. Our comminution consultants use JKSimMet and tailor the general form of the models by fitting or adapting the parameters specific to both ore and machine. This methodology has been proven to effectively assess plant performance and improve throughput in comminution and classification circuits around the world.

Additionally, we can quickly and effectively assess energy requirements and provide our clients with strategies to significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

Flotation circuit design, process evaluation and optimisation

Our flotation team assess the potential opportunities for improvement in the flotation circuit and tailor the most appropriate and effective solution to achieve the optimum metallurgical performance.

Our flotation consulting team comprises highly skilled specialists with expertise in process benchmarking; process training; modelling and simulation; design and optimisation of flotation circuits.

With the help of JKSimFloat, our flotation evaluation methodology has been applied to more than 25 mining operations throughout the world. Many of our clients have publicly claimed great success, reporting up to US$ 25 million pa additional profit to the bottom line.

Geometallurgy and Integrated extraction

JKTech, together with our strategic alliance partner QG, offer the Geomet® system to proactively improve mining process effectiveness and risk management. This alliance capitalises on the technical expertise of each party to provide our clients with a fully integrated geometallurgical service.

Geomet® integrates ore deposit knowledge with financial, technical and sustainability drivers. This process involves the predictive quantification of mining process responses, embodied within the block model, for:

• Guidance of sampling programs for plant design test work

Processing Statistics

Minerals engineers are often required to do experiments and to analyse the results from those experiments. They may range from simple laboratory tests to major plant trials lasting several months and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

JKTech specialists in mineral processing statistics use the most appropriate statistical tools to assist engineers to make wise decisions in the face of uncertainty in the mineral processing environment. This covers the statistical principles and methods needed to plan, conduct and analyse effective laboratory experiments and plant trials to allow you to arrive at the right decision in the shortest possible time and the lowest possible cost.

Mine Site Water Management

In many countries, mining activity takes place in regions where water is a limiting factor for the development and survival of mining operations - either due to arid and semi-arid conditions or to regions that are prone to flooding. To address these issues, JKTech provides consulting and advice in mine site water management, using tools and methodologies developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), a centre of the Sustainable Minerals Institute.

One of the cutting edge technologies is WaterMinerTM, an online information system, that allows mine managers to make strategic decisions regarding water management on their sites. The WaterMinerTM information system, combined with JKTech expertise, provides a cost effective means of benchmarking water performance against industry best practice, generating consistent, defensible sustainability reports and assessing threats and opportunities impacting on water security on mine sites and within companies. It has shown significant benefit especially in managing mine site water usage, sources, destinations and storage and provide the industry with better understanding and improvement of site water management.

Risk Management

JKTech Risk Management Services delivers unique expertise based on the research outcomes of MISHC (Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre), a centre of the Sustainable Minerals Institute. Geometallurgical testing

JKTech offers a suite of geometallurgical tests, including the GeM series of tests, for the characterisation of processing performance attributes for larger numbers of samples with smaller volumes than traditional metallurgical tests. These tests can be used within the GeoMet® system to allow for the predictive quantification of mining process responses across the ore deposit.

SMI Knowledge Transfer (SMI KT) is a unique professional development unit offering life-of-mine professional development activities including training programs, courses and workshops to the global minerals industry.

All professional development activities are delivered by internationally recognised scientists and engineers from JKTech, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) at The University of Queensland, as well as leading experts from both industry and government. The close association with the seven Centres of the SMI provides access to technical innovation arising from recent industry-oriented research. This will enable delivery of a comprehensive range of courses on mining, mineral processing and sustainable development.

Attendance at SMI KT courses will benefit senior managers, geologists, mining and metallurgical engineers, and environmental and community relations professionals.
