Summary
The deliverable D6.5 is a confidential document delivered in the context of WP6, Task 6.3: Train-
ing and conclusive workshops with regard to the dissemination of the project results.
This document is an overview about the training workshops held under the auspices of NANO-
MATCH to introduce the new consolidation products developed within the project to the respec-
tive stakeholders, i. e. restorers, conservators, architects, site owners, and decision makers.
The following workshops had been organized by the local partners in accordance with the
awareness and dissemination plan of NANOMATCH:

Introduction
The dissemination strategy developed within NANOMATCH and outlined in the 1st
Version of
the Awareness and Dissemination Plan (ADP) consisted in the organisation and performance of
four scientific and training workshops intended to explain and demonstrate the new metal
alkoxide consolidants mainly to restorers working in the field of stone, stone-like, wood, and
glass consolidation. Potential national and regional end users (conservators, local authorities,
site owners) were also invited to take part in the workshops. The four events took place in
Spain (Madrid, June 12th
, 2014), Germany (Cologne, July 18th
, 2014), France (Champs-sur-
Marne, July 2nd
, 2014), and Romania (Bucharest, September 22nd
, 2014).
The Scientific and training workshop in Madrid was organized by AIDICO and focused on stone
and wood consolidation. It was linked to an international conference (ART’14) to attract a large
international audience. In Champs-sur-Marne the focus was set by CPP-LRMH on stone, stone-
like and glass conservation and scientific presentations were followed by demonstrations of the
behaviour of the commercial products in comparison with the new concept of forming equal
materials within the pores or microfissures of the selected substrates through hydrolysis and
condensation of metal alkoxides. Questions concerning stone and glass consolidation were an-
swered on-site and transferred to the partner responsible for the operational guidelines (Deliv-
erable 6.4). Several participants were interested in receiving samples of the new consolidants
for their own test applications.
In Cologne an Expert workshop on glass consolidation was based on a list of participants com-
piled by HDK and comprising the most important German stakeholders working in the field of
glass conservation, including e.g. Bamberg University (Department Heritage Conservation and
Conservation Science of Historic Monuments) as well as the University of Applied Sciences in
Erfurt (Faculty of Conservation/Restoration, Department Stained Glass and Glass Objects) and
curators for stained glass from German state authorities for heritage conservation, museum
conservators for stained glass and vessel glass objects (e.g. Kestner-Museum Hannover, Kunst-
sammlungen der Veste Coburg). The scientific presentations highlighted the objectives and
work programme of the NANOMATCH project, the knowledge about glass degradation mecha-
nisms and investigations concerning the consolidation of archaeological glasses. The partici-
pants of the training session gained their own experimental experience with the aluminium
metal alkoxide (A18) on model glasses as well as on their own original substrates.
For the Training workshop in Bucharest, experiments on (lime-)stone and model samples
(chalk) were foreseen by DUCT and application tests with the new consolidants (calcium alkox-
ides) were used to introduce the materials developed within NANOMATCH and to obtain feed-
back from people experienced in conservation and restoration science and practitioners (con-
servators, restorators) about the pros and cons of the new materials in comparison to commer-
cial products available since many years.

1 Report on the Scientific Workshop in Madrid
The Scientific Workshop in Madrid was organized by AIDICO as a special session of the 11th
In-
ternational Conference on Non-destructive Investigations and Microanalysis for the Diagnostics
and Conservation of Cultural and Environmental Heritage (ART’14). The technical Training
Course covered the application of the products, their comparison to commercially available
ones as well as documentation and discussion.
Each attendant received a portfolio with complementary documentation of NANOMATCH (NA-
NOMATCH and NanomeCH leaflets, operational guidelines and copies of the article published in
AEND official journal).
A. Bernardi and partners of different European countries (Italy, Spain, and Romania) presented
some of the most important aspects of the project in a double workshop session. In the first
part of the programme (Figure 6.5.1.), a series of scientific lectures concerning different aspects
of the research activities of the project were exposed (general description of the project, mech-
anism of metal alkoxides as consolidants, application and workability on different substrates
and non-destructive testing procedures). In addition, the European NanomeCH cluster was also
introduced by the attendance of Tomas Markevicius, member of IMAT project and the cluster.

The second part of the session consisted of a technical training performed by DUCT (Romania),
where the main objective was to exhibit the benefits of applying the new consolidant treat-
ments developed in NANOMATCH on different stone and wood substrates. Then application
results were compared to commercially available products based on calcium hydroxide. Scratch
resistance and pigment fixation tests performed in situ demonstrated that NANOMATCH prod-
ucts offer notably increased consolidant properties compared to the products available in the
market.

More than 20 participants were present in each session of the workshop. Restorers, members
of different artwork organizations and scientists of RTD centres showed their interest in the
project, which expressed a notable satisfaction according to the results obtained after the prac-
tical application of the calcium alkoxide solutions on stone materials.

2 Report on the Training Workshop in Champs-sur-Marne
A scientific and training workshop to present and demonstrate the key aspects of the NANO-
MATCH project was organized on July 2nd
, 2014 in Champs-sur-Marne (France) in the premises
of the Cercle des Partenaires du Patrimoine - Laboratoire de Recherche des Monuments His-
toriques (see program hereafter).

This workshop focused on the applications of the NANOMATCH calcium alkoxides on stone and
wall painting and of the aluminium alkoxide product (A18) on glass. Almost 20 participants at-
tended the workshop, essentially glass, stone and wall painting conservators, and a few herit-
age architects were also present.

The morning was devoted to lectures by different NANOMATCH partners regarding the most
important aspects of the project. Adriana Bernardi (CNR ISAC, Italy), coordinator of the project,
first gave a general overview of the project, then Monica Favaro (CNR IENI, Italy) explained the
chemical synthesis of the new developed calcium alkoxides and their working mechanism as
consolidants for carbonate substrates. Martin Labouré (Eschlimann) exposed the application
and workability trials on stone. Finally, Elsa Bourguignon (CPP-LRMH) summarized the laborato-
ry tests carried out on stone and wall painting substrates and Claudine Loisel (CPP-LRMH) the
tests carried out on glass substrates.
In the afternoon, the participants were divided in two groups, glass and stone, for the practical
sessions of the workshop. Martin Labouré (Eschlimann) and Iulian Olteanu (DUCT) led the stone
and wall painting session, whereas Peter Berkenkopf (HDK) and Claudine Loisel (CPP-LRMH) led
the glass session.

The participants had the opportunity to examine samples treated with the NANOMATCH prod-
ucts, to see the direct practical application of the new consolidants and to use them them-
selves. These products were also compared to commercially available products. On stone and
wall painting samples, scratch tests and pigment fixation tests were carried out after treatment
to demonstrate the increased surface consolidation brought about by the NANOMATCH prod-
ucts.

One of the goals of this workshop was to get some feedback from practitioners regarding the
products developed that are not yet at the stage of commercialization. Discussion between
NANOMATCH project members and workshop participants was encouraged throughout the
day, in questions during the morning lectures and the afternoon practical sessions as well as in
more informal exchanges during coffee breaks and lunch. The participants showed a high inter-
est in the developed products and most of them hope that they will be soon available on a
commercial basis.

3 Report on the training workshop in Cologne
The Expert and training workshop in Cologne took place from July 17th
to July 18th
, 2014 and
was focused on the A18 as a newly developed consolidation material for micro-cracked glass.
The invited people were conservators for stained glass and vessel glass, museum curators and
local authorities for the preservation of cultural heritage. The meeting was divided in two ses-
sions. The afternoon of July 17th
started with general information about targets, structure and
participants of the NANOMATCH project. Further on, A18 was introduced in various presenta-
tions, considering scientific and chemical aspects as well as practical experiences and applica-
tion methods. Besides, an invited speaker presented the results concerning a stabilization
treatment with A18 on crizzled archaeological glass. The final discussion was animated and con-
structive. A great number of questions was asked concerning A18 which indicated the vivid in-
terest of all participants.
On the following day a limited circle of experienced conservators for stained and vessel glass
performed own test treatments in the glass studio of Cologne Cathedral. Artificially damaged
model glasses with micro-fissures were at their disposal for trials. Additionally, original glass
samples brought by the invited guests served as test-objects. The possibility of obtaining im-
pressions single-handedly about the properties and the applicability of A18 was highly appreci-
ated by the workshop participants. Their experiences, considerations, results and estimations
were incorporated in a feedback questionnaire, which was transferred to the partner responsi-
ble for the operational guidelines (Deliverable 6.4).

4 Report on the Training Workshop in Bucharest
The training workshop in Bucharest took place at Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum on
September 22nd
, 2014 under the patronage of the University of Art, Bucharest (Dept. of Mural
Painting and Stone Conservation) and was structured very similarly to the workshop in Champs-
sur-Marne. It focused on stone and stone-like material and was directed towards stakeholders
and experts in stone and mural painting conservation, mainly from regional or national authori-
ties, especially students from the department of Heritage Conservation of Bucharest Art Uni-
versity. Restorers and experts from private companies, but also curators for stone and mural
painting in Romania were invited as well as representatives of the Romanian Ministry of Cul-
ture. Below, the invitation to the workshop and the workshop programme are displayed (Figure
6.5.9).

The scientific workshop was inaugurated by a representative of Dimitrie Gusti National Village
Museum. The coordinator of NANOMATCH project, Dr. Adriana Bernardi, introduced the gen-
eral outlines of the workshop and the objectives of the European research project NANO-
MATCH.

Afterwards, the reaction mechanism of calcium alkoxides, their workability for the consolida-
tion of carbonate substrates, i.e. limestone and fresco wall paintings, as well as the consolida-
tion results achieved under laboratory conditions were presented.

The main goal of the workshop – to receive feedback about the performance of the new consol-
idants developed within NANOMATCH – has been reached.

Conclusion
The Scientific and training workshops performed by the NANOMATCH consortium in Madrid,
Champs-sur-Marne, Cologne, and Bucharest proved to be a very successful approach to intro-
duce and demonstrate the new developed products to the stakeholders, i. e. restorers, conser-
vators, architects, site owners, and decision makers of public authorities. The regional character
of the workshops had been chosen to attract also local authorities and site owners responsible
for sustainable measures to prevent their stone, stone-like, wood, and glass based cultural her-
itage from degradation.
In general, the workshop participants were informed about the background and objectives of
the NANOMATCH project and the scientific background of the new consolidants. They received
handouts explaining the reaction mechanism of metal alkoxides and their application tech-
niques as well as the preliminary version of the operational guidelines, risk assessment results,
and occupational safety measures. They were enabled to perform their own experiments with
small amounts of the new consolidants either on model samples or on their own substrates
brought to the training workshop site.
The feedback obtained by the national and international participants demonstrated the high
interest in the new materials and concepts for the consolidation of deteriorated stone, stone-
like, wood and glass materials. The questions and answers raised during the workshop found
their way into the guidelines for applying the new metal alkoxides on the respective substrates
(Deliverable 6.4).
The experiences and feedbacks obtained during the scientific and training courses can be used
to further optimize the materials and procedures developed during the NANOMATCH project
and constitutes the basis for their future successful commercialization.
