Congress terms Anna's fast premature, insult to parliament

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) The Con-gress Sunday rejected Anna Hazare's token fast for a strong anti-corrup-tion Lokpal bill, terming it "preemp-tive" and "premature" and an "insult to parliament".

"I have no hesitation in saying that Anna is insulting parliament," said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.

"The Lokpal bill report has been submitted. There will be debate and decision will be taken. Laws cannot be made at Jantar Mantar," he said.

Terming the fast "premature", gov-ernment spokesperson Ashwani Ku-mar questioned Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley's par-ticipation in the debate held at the fast

venue. "As far as Mr. Arun Jaitley's going

there is concerned, as the leader of his party in Rajya Sabha, he should have debated it (Lokpal bill) in parlia-ment," Ashwani Kumar said.

Defending Jaitley, BJP spokesper-son Nirmala Sitharaman said: "Politi-cal parties expressing their opinion on an important issue like Lokpal is utilising democracy.

Leaders of various political parties Sunday came out strongly in support of Hazare, who was on a day-long fast for a Lokpal that would include the prime minister and entire bureau-cracy under its purview.

But the support to the 74-year-old anti-graft crusader, protesting in the

heart of the capital, came with a word of caution. Hazare was asked not to be rigid about acceptance of his Jan Lokpal bill and not to expect parlia-ment to accept every single word of his proposed ombudsman law.

Thousands flocked to the venue, Jantar Mantar, against what Hazare believes is a toothless Lokpal recom-mended by a parliamentary standing committee.

They were joined in Communist Party of India-Marxist's (CPI-M) Brinda Karat, CPI's A.B. Bardhan, Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and other leaders of regional parties including Samajwadi Party, the Biju Janata Dal, the Akali Dal and the Telugu Desam Party.

AMRI directors grilled, toll now 93

Kolkata, Dec 11 (IANS) Police Sunday grilled the six arrested AMRI hospital directors as the death toll in Friday's fire at the high-cost medical facility in south Kolkata went up to 93. Protests against the hospital authorities and candlelight vigils for the dead continued for the second day.

Advanced Medicare & Research Institute (AMRI) directors, in-cluding Shrachi Group chairman S.K. Todi and his counterpart in the Emami Group R.S. Goenka, charged with culpable homicide

and now lodged in the Lalbazar police lock up after their arrest Friday, were being interrogated through the day to ascertain the "lapses" and "irregularities" in the hospital, said a police officer.

There was tension Sunday at the hospital's desolate Annexe 1 block, where the blaze early Friday had choked to death mostly infirm patients - many of them in their sleep - and two nurses, as fumes again billowed out from the base-ment, said to be the source of the killer fire.

Kolkata's Mercy Hospital to close down

Kolkata, Dec 12 (IANS) In a fall out of the AMRI Hospital fire tragedy, the authorities of Mercy Hospital in upmarket Park Street has decided to close down opera-tions after activists of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Commu-nist) held an angry demonstration Sunday asking the management

not to shift its kitchen from the basement.

"After the Amri Hospital fire, the government has given a direc-tive to keep hospital basements va-cant. So in an emergency meeting we had already decided to shift the kitchen to Tangra area a few kilo-metres away temporarily.

Special session of Tamil Nadu assembly on Mullaperiyar issue Chennai, Dec 11 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Sunday announced that a special session of the assembly will be con-vened Dec 15 to pass a resolution that the state will not give up its rights over Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala because of the "imaginary threat to its safety".

While the dam is located in Ker-ala, its control is with Tamil Nadu and its waters serves the state. The decision for a special session is a re-versal of stand for Jayalalithaa, who had earlier ruled out such a plan cit-ing the united stand of the state's po-litical parties on the issue.

Declaring that the people of Tamil Nadu, and neither she or her gov-ernment have got anything against the people of Kerala or its govern-ment, Jayalalithaa said: "We have no quarrel with the people of Kerala.

Therefore, destroying their proper-ties or causing injury to them and in the process also causing ourselves pain and hardship is not a solution."

With the convening of the special session, the opposition DMK has ad-vanced its human chain protest by a day to Dec 14. The party had earlier announced the human chain protest Dec 15 at Theni, Madurai, Sivagan-ga, Dindugal and Ramanathapuram districts.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been at loggerheads over the dam, built under an 1886 accord between the then Maharaja of Travancore and the erstwhile British Raj. Tamil Nadu wants the dam's storage capac-ity to be increased from the current 136 feet (41.5 metres) to 142 feet (43 metres) as per a Supreme Court or-der, while Kerala wants a new dam in its place.

Kashmir minister escapes bid on life, cop killed Srinagar, Dec 11 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Law and Parliamen-tary Affairs Minister Ali Muham-mad Sagar Sunday escaped a bid on his life when separatist guerrillas attacked him in Srinagar. One of the minister's security guards was killed in the attack. The minister had gone to his ancestral home in connection with a social function there. This is the first major separatist guerrilla attack in Srinagar in many months and triggered panic in the area. The attack occurred at a time when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been advocating the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Srinagar district as well as Badgam district in the Valley and Jammu and Samba dis-tricts in the Jammu region.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2009.

Indian MPs back idea for UN parliament

New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS) Around 40 Indian MPs have backed the proposal for a UN parliamentary assembly that will comprise member nations' legisla-tors and lead eventually to direct elec-tion of UN parliament members by citi-zens worldwide. Among those who have endorsed the proposal are Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Desh-mukh and ministers of state Saugata Roy and Dinsha Patel. Former minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor, former panchayati raj and sports min-ister Mani Shankar Aiyar and former minister for water resources Saifuddin Soz also backed the idea of a UN parlia-ment which is gathering momentum.

They have appealed to the UN and the governments of its member states "to es-tablish a Parliamentary Assembly at the United Nations". They recommended "a gradual implementation of democratic participation and representation on the global level".

Capital’s centenary: A walk down the Kingsway Camp

Thousands flock to Hazare fast

Star gazers catch glimpse of year’s last lunar eclipse

Cherie Blair and Kajol in the capital, extend support to widows and child education

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) One hun-dred years ago, India - which was a colony of the British empire - spent nearly one million pounds sterling to host King George V at the corona-tion durbar at Kingsway Camp in the capital on Dec 12.

The day marked the beginning of a journey for the ancient city of Delhi - the mythical Indraprashtha of the Mahabharata - as a modern, cosmo-politan capital.

The foundation of the new city was laid Dec 15, 1911 - three days after the coronation durbar. The capital was named New Delhi in 1927 and was

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Donning the now popular ‘I am Anna’ T-shirts and waving national flag, thou-sands turned up at Jantar Mantar here on Sunday as Anna Hazare sat on a day-long fast in support of a stringent Lokpal bill.

And most did not mind sacrificing a holiday for the cause.

“Although it’s a Sunday, we owe this to our country. We are working today to have a bet-ter tomorrow,” said Sanjay Lamba, a 26-year-old trader from Jind, Hary-ana.

People trooped in to the protest site from bus stands and Metro stations, a sense of purpose evident on their faces.

A huge screen was set up on one side of the road. TV cameras mount-ed on cranes and camerapersons perched atop temporary platforms captured the scene.

Around 1,000 police and paramili-tary personnel were deployed at the venue.

New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS) Star gaz-ers of the capital pointed their tele-scopes towards the moon as it turned crimson, marking the beginning of the last and the longest total lunar eclipse of the year on Saturday night.

To catch the glimpse of the celestial event, several lunar watches were or-ganised across the city.

The nearly six-hour eclipse started around 5.04 p.m.

SPACE, an NGO for promotion of astronomy amongst school-goers, set up two telescopes for observation and several telephoto cameras for photog-raphy at India Gate.

Akshay, an engineering student

and volunteer for SPACE, said: “We have several school kids and they are very excited. Even parents want sev-eral turns at the telescopes.”

Karan, 14, was happy to explain how and why a lunar eclipse takes place.

His mother, accompanying him, said she was observing a fast due to the eclipse. “I am surely not eat-ing food. It’s bad to eat food during eclipse,” his mother told IANS.

Another watch was organised by the Amateur Astronomers Associa-tion Delhi at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium.

New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS) Bollywood actress Kajol, a mother of two, says education is the prime need of the so-ciety, and that every child must be ed-ucated to bring about positive change.

The 37-year-old, who is the inter-national goodwill ambassador of Britain-based Loomba Foundation, which supports the cause of educating children of poor widows in India, was here on Saturday to attend the annual charity dinner of the organisation.

“We see widows every day, but we hardly think about it as a cause or about how difficult it is for widows to lead a normal, happy life here. I have two kids and I know it is difficult to bring them up. Forget two people; even four people are sometimes not enough to handle children well. So, one can imagine what widows with less or no financial support can go through,” Kajol said while addressing the media.

“Ëducation should be the basis

of the society. If you want to see the change, you can’t wait for people on your left and right to bring it. You have to bring that change... because every child deserves education,” said the Bollywood beauty, who has been asso-ciated with the Loomba Foundation, along with her husband Ajay Devgn, for the past three years.

Also Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, was here to attend the event, and un-derlined the importance of extending a hand to underprivileged widows in India.

“They are an integral part of our so-ciety. I have to ask what kind of society we are, if we don’t extend our help to them?” she said.

She even handed over mementos and certificates to a few businessmen who came forward to support the foundation’s prime cause of educating children of poor widows in India.

Kidnappers drop minor boy near house

Abducted minor rescued by police

New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS) A six-and-half years old boy who was allegedly abducted two days ago from his south Delhi house has returned safely, police said on Sat-urday. “A probe is on to apprehend the culprits behind his kidnapping. The child’s aunt has been detained,” said the officer.

New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS) An 11-year-old girl, who was abducted in the capital and raped later, has been rescued from Mathura city of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Friday. The girl went missing from south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri Dec 3. On Dec 6, police came to know that last time she was seen with a person on the way to Mathura. “A police team was rushed to Mathura from where the girl was on Dec 7 rescued from the clutches of the accused, identified as Tejpal, 25, a resident of Mathura,” said a police officer.

formally inaugurated Feb 13, 1931.Two British architects Edwin Lutyens and Her-

bert Baker laid out the architectural map of the city.Commemoration of 100 years of the coronation

durbar of King George V may not be a mega social event on the government’s calendar - but the cen-tenary of New Delhi has become a private pilgrim-age down the lanes of the country’s colonial past for many.

“The government of India feels that if it com-memorates the coronation durbar - it might legiti-mise colonial rule in India,” said writer, journalist and heritage activist Sunil Raman, the co-author of a new book, “Delhi Durbar - 1911: The Complete Story”.

The coronation - a show of opulence and ostenta-tion - elicited a mixed reaction from the then na-tionalistic and British-owned media.

Hundred years on, memories of the coronation durbar remain a scintillating moment in the his-tory of the capital as it prepares to lobby for World Heritage City status from United Nations.

India gets its way as climate summit ends

Pakistan takes control of Shamsi airbase as US leaves

Durban, Dec 11 (IANS) An impas-sioned speech by Environment Min-ister Jayanthi Natarajan capped the finale of the UN climate summit that ended here early Sunday with a Dur-ban Package, after she warned that India “will never be intimidated by any threat or pressure”.

Natarajan’s speech ensured that India’s main concern - the inclusion of the concept of equity in the fight against climate change - became part of the package.

According to the Durban Package, countries have agreed to work to-wards a new regime that ensures all countries take legal emissions cuts. The countries also committed to a second term of Kyoto Protocol - the existing regime.

Natarajan ensured there was a third option -- “an agreed outcome with legal force” -- apart from proto-col or a legal instrument.

The plenary session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change summit came to a halt fol-lowing row between Natarajan and European Union (EU) Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard after objection over agreements

reached behind closed doors. The conference ended a day and a

half behind schedule because of in-tense negotiations over contentious issues.

India had wanted a “legal out-come” as the third option, but Hede-gaard said this would put countries’ sincerity in doubt.

As Natarajan finished her speech amid a thunderous ovation from a hall packed with thousands of dele-

gates from 194 governments, observ-ers and the media, some countries backed the EU but China strongly supported India.

Then some countries supported India and China, while others still supported EU.

Conference president and South Africa’s Foreign Minister Maite Nkoane Mashabane then halted the session and asked EU and India to go into a huddle there and then.

Islamabad, Dec 11 (IANS) Paki-stani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said President Asif Ali Zardari’s health is improving as he is feeling comfortable and resting in a Dubai hospital as advised by doctors.

“He (Zardari) is improving”, APP quoted Gilani as telling a TV channel.

Gilani also said that the presi-dent talked to him over phone.

“The president talked to me on

phone yesterday (Friday), when (opposition leades) Chaudhry Shu-jaat and Pervaiz Ilahi had come to meet me at the Prime Minister House”, Gilani said.

About speculation on Zardari’s health, Gilani said: “Anybody can fall sick and he (Zardari) is also an average human being.”

Gilani said he and Zardari’s family had insisted he go abroad for medical tests, check-up and treatment.

Moscow, Dec 10 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Tens of thousands of Russians turned out in cities across the country Saturday in mass peaceful protest over re-cent elections they claim were rigged in favour of Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party, said authorities.

The demonstrations, which began on Russia’s Pacific Ocean coast and moved west-wards over eight time zones, were an unprecedented test of Putin’s tolerance and a rare, large-scale display of popular unease with the political sta-tus-quo in the country.

In Moscow, thousands of protestors waving ban-ners and chanting slogans like “Swindlers and Thieves!” and “Churov Resign!” -- references to United Russia and Election Com-mission chief Vladimir Churov -- converged at Bolotnaya Square,

across the Moskva river from the Kremlin.

The rolling, nationwide demon-strations came a day after Russian election authorities announced

final, official results of legislative elections giving United Russia 238 seats in the 450-seat State Duma with just under 50 percent of the popular vote.

Islamabad, Dec 11 (IANS) Pa-kistani opposition leader Nawaz Sharif has vowed to bring to jus-tice former prime minister Bena-zir Bhutto’s killers if he comes to power, Dawn News reported.

Addressing a rally in Bhutto’s hometown of Larkana in Sindh province Saturday, Nawaz Sharif, who has twice been the country’s prime minister, said he would mo-bilise all resources to arrest the

Bhutto’s killers. Criticizing the ruling Pakistan

Peoples Party (PPP)-led govern-ment, Sharif said nothing could be expected from it when it failed to even catch the murderers of the slain former prime minister.

He also said that he did not view his opponents “as personal en-emy”, adding “my dream is to see Pakistan flourishing and its people prospering”.

Islamabad, Dec 11 (IANS) Paki-stan’s defence ministry Sunday took control of the Shamsi airbase as the US vacated the facility af-ter the government ordered this following the NATO strikes that killed 24 Pakistani troops last month, Geo News reported.

According to security sources, the officials of Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Interior were present at the Shamsi air-

base, located in Pakistan’s Balo-chistan province.

The decision on whether to hand over the airbase to UAE will be taken later on, the sources added.

According to sources, about 20 US cargo planes landed at the airbase over the past week to shift sensitive equipment, vehicles and belongings of the US troops who had been using the base for the last 10 years.

Three women activists receive Nobel Peace Prize

Kabul, Dec 11 (IANS) Three Taliban insurgents were killed and 32 ar-rested during a series of joint military operations carried out in various Afghan provinces over the last 24 hours, the Afghanistan interior ministry said on Sunday morning. The ANP also confiscated 12 AK-47 assault rifles and 10kg opium in these security operations, it said.

London, Dec 11 (IANS) An Italian cat has turned world’s third richest animal by inherit-ing her owner’s fortune of almost 10 million pounds(over $15 million) after the wealthy lady died aged 94. Maria Assunta, the cat’s owner, died last month aged 94 and according to lawyers entrusted with her estate, she left the fortune in property to Tom-masino, a stray cat she had found and looked after because of her love for animals, the Daily Mail reported

Stockholm, Dec 10 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Three women rights activists from Africa and the Arab world received the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo on Saturday. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Yemen’s pro-democracy campaigner Tawakul Karman were awarded the prize in early October for their “non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights.” The three women will share the prize of one million euro (about $1.5 million).

Mamata urges banks to hike agriculture, SME credit in BengalKolkata, Dec 10 (IANS): West Ben-gal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday urged public sector banks to increase the flow of credit to agri-culture and micro and small enter-prises sectors in the state. Bring companies under Lokpal: CPI-M

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS): The Communist Party of India-Marx-ist (CPI-M) Sunday said it favored a strong Lokpal bill that fights corruption not only within the government but also in the private sector. CPI-M leader Brinda Karat, participating in a public debate on the proposed anti-graft law, said fighting graft in the corporate world was equally important be-cause the private sector was "loot-ing" national wealth and enjoyed freedom. "We should also focus on corruption in the corporate world. We should not forget the loot by the corporate world," Karat said. The debate was organized by so-cial activists led by Anna Hazare, who was on a day-long fast at Jan-

tar Mantar here. She said licenses and contracts given to private companies on the basis of corrup-tion should be cancelled and the Lokpal should have a power to do so. "The 2G (telecom) licenses have not been cancelled. Land mining contracts in Karnataka have not been cancelled," Karat pointed out. She added that the recommenda-tions of the parliamentary stand-ing committee on the Lokpal bill were weak and "are equivalent to not having the Lokpal at all". "It is a weak Lokpal bill. You are after NGOs but why leave the corporate world out," she asked. She said the CPI-M was for the inclusion of the prime minister under the purview of the Lokpal.

India's forex reserves rise by $2.48 bnMumbai, Dec 11 (IANS): India's foreign exchange reserves climbed by $2.48 billion to $306.84 billion for the week ended Dec 2, rising for the first time in five weeks due to an increase in the value of foreign cur-rency assets and gold reserves, official data showed. This is the first time in the last five weeks the forex reserves kitty has registered a gain. The kitty had dropped by over $16 billion in the previous four weeks. They had dropped by $4.26 billion and $5.71 billion respectively in the previous

two weeks. Foreign currency assets, the biggest component of the forex re-serves kitty, increased by $1.31 billion to $271.69 billion for the week ended Dec 2, according to the weekly statis-tical supplement of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). RBI does not provide any reason for the change in the for-eign currency assets. It says the assets expressed in US dollar terms include the effect of appreciation or deprecia-tion of non-US currencies such as the pound sterling, euro and yen held in reserve.

Expert calls for ‘responsible design’New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS): With increasing commodisation, it has become necessary for businesses to think of an entire product eco-system instead of a product alone, says an expert.

This is where service design comes in. On the other side, the service sec-tor constitutes about 70 percent of the economy. The companies in this domain also need “service design”. These were some of the themes dis-cussed at the just ended 11th CII-NID Design Summit here. “We need to have ‘responsible design’ to be able to get our focus right,” Prasad Boradkar, Director, Innovation Space, Arizona State University, US, said. “Let us have foresight not forecast in service design.

“We need to envision products not in isolation but as components of larger networks; we need to imagine services not in individual terms but as systems; and we need to think of design not as being human-centered but as being life-centered,” he said. “The things we design are not merely expressions of form and function; they are critical components of eve-ryday culture, and have intricate lives and deaths of their own,” Boradkar added. “Design innovations are oxy-morons,” said Mark Watson of De-sign Providence, Australia. “Service design has emerged as a strong tool in change management across the ‘for profit’ as well as the ‘not for profit’ sectors in providing creative solu-tions to ‘wicked’ and ‘not so wicked’ problems in organizational opera-tions internationally,” Watson said.

Government to expand banking, insurance services in northeast

Kolkata, Dec 10 (IANS): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Satur-day said the government will expand the banking and insurance networks in the eastern and northeastern states. "Government is keen to ex-pand the network of banks in eastern states, particularly in the northeast-ern states," said Mukherjee, address-ing a meeting with chief ministers

of the states and chief executives of public sector banks here. Accord-ing to Mukherjee, 27 out of 69 un-banked blocks in the northeastern region were added to the banking services on Nov 30. "The remaining 42 unbanked blocks are in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. I would urge the banks to extend the banking services to these

remaining blocks also by March 31, 2012."

Mukherjee said the government had taken several initiatives to in-crease banking penetration in the northeast like directing banks to open branches in an area with cap-tive population of 5,000 and above, and ensuring that all districts have a currency reserve.

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS): Faced with increasing demand and rising cost of importing raw material, the Indian fertilizer industry is eying mineral assets in Africa. "Today there is a possibility of buying stakes in sev-eral mines, which are in initial stages of operations," A. Vellayan, chairman of the Fertilizer Association of India (FAI), told IANS. Some of the key mining areas the industry is eyeing in Africa are in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Congo and Ghana. Vellayan said the prices of fertilizers and the subsidies given by the government would also be re-

duced if fertilizer companies entered into joint ventures (JVs) with min-ing companies. "This will have sig-nificant impact on prices. Currently, there are Indian companies in South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco, and many of them are thinking of enter-ing other African countries. But the government's support is required," Vellayan, group chairman of the Chennai-based Murugappa group, said. Fertilizer manufacturers have asked the government to create a $20 billion sovereign fund to buy overseas mineral assets.

INFLATIONThe night has been long and the

sun has not dawned upon us this time. Wondering if this is how we will get to the basics of inflation. Actually Not! I was just referring to the long span of inflation inflicted nation of ours. Every morning you can read one or two pieces on inflation, govt. measures, affected poor, non-affected rich class, budget planning goes cha-otic in middle class, etc. But the ques-

tion is why we are not able to control this demon named Inflation?

I’m a strong believer that govt. is never the sole responsible author-ity for any chaos or problem in the nation faces (irrespective of the rul-ing party- no soft corners). In fact, everybody in the nation holds some responsibility and can contribute to-wards a stable economy. Well, let us see and understand how.

Inflation is actually the rise in prices of goods and services over a period of time. When the general level of prices increases, one unit of currency can buy fewer goods and services with it. It also refers to the decreasing purchas-ing power of the people and the nation as a whole. Inflation is measured with tools like inflation rate and price index, mostly CPI (Consumer Price Index). And Inflation rate is the increase in the level of price index over a period of time and change of price level. With simple equation here we can understand that:

Where, Ir = Inflation rateP1= current level of price.P0= price level a year ago.

So moving ahead, let us see the various factors that cause inflation and the con-sequences it brings. In general whenever aggregate de-mand exceeds the aggregate supply of goods and services, inflation occurs. There are various factors that affect demand, such as; increase in money supply, cheap monetary policy, deficit financing, black money, increase in ex-ports, etc. Whenever there is increase in supply of money, there is increase in the spending capacity of the people, and it leads to increase in demand of goods. Consumers spend more due to conspicuous consumption and dem-onstration effect. It has also increased because of the credit facilities as it fa-cilitates them with ability to buy goods on hire purchase and installments. This causes undue increase in demand and thereby increasing the inflation. In deficit fi-nancing, in order to pay it dues and debts, the govt. borrows from the public and print more notes which again circulate in the market giv-ing rise to increase in demand of goods. The same effect occurs with the black money as it gives freedom to people to buy goods which they would not have been able to otherwise. And this black money is primarily due to tax evasions and corruption. Similarly there are factors such as industrial dispute, shortage of factors of production, in-

creased exports, artificial scarcity, etc. that af-fect the supply of goods in the economy. This causes instability in the economy and the de-mand-supply cycle is affected. In lieu it causes inflation. It decreases the real value of money and other monetary items over time. Moreo-ver the uncertainty over future inflation dis-courages investment and savings. Also the ex-cess demand is countered by hoarding which causes further shortage of goods thereby fur-ther increasing the price. So it ends up in a vi-cious cycle which finds no way out.

Let us begin with what is Inflation? So keeping in view all the factors that cause inflation, inflation is categorized into four types viz:

It is also called as demand pull or excess demand inflation. This happens when total demand of goods and service exceeds the total supply of goods.

As the name suggests, if there is an increase in the production cost of goods, there will be unprece-dented increase in the price of goods hence caus-ing cost push inflation. E.g. if labour prices go up at a particular place, the goods manufactured at the site would face increase in the price.

This is a type of inflation which is caused by busi-ness houses and industries when they decide to increase the price of goods to increase their profit margins. It is also called as administered price in-flation. The point to be noted is it will never hap-pen during downturn of the economy, economic slowdown or in times of recession.

This type of inflation takes place when there is in-crease in the price of goods and services produced by a certain sector of industries. E.g. increase in the cost of crude oil would increase the price of all the products related to crude oil, so if there is increase in the price of fuel, the ticket fares would also go up.

-Wage Inflation:

-Cost Push Inflation:

-Pricing Power Inflation:

-Sectoral Inflation:

After looking on the various factors, we can say that if there is regulated supply of money/income and there is a balanced demand-supply cycle, inflation can be controlled to a greater extent.

We can take some monetary and fiscal measures regarding

the same. One of the best ways is to put a limit on credit ability. This can be

done by raising the bank rates, selling se-curities in the open market, raising the reserve

ratio. However this is not effective if there is cost-push inflation. This can be used only if there is de-mand pull inflation. Fiscal measures come to greater relief to curb in-flation. This can control government expenditure, personal consumption expenditure, private and public investment. This can be achieved by reduc-tion in unnecessary expenditure, increase in taxes (not to be kept so high so as to discourage invest-ment, savings and production), increase in saving and attract higher fetching saving policies. An important measure is to adopt anti-inflationary budgetary policy. The public debt should not be paid back during the time of inflation and instead postponed to some future date unless the infla-tion is controlled. Other measures are to increase the production if factors favor, adopting a rational wage policy but this generally practiced in case of hyperinflation. Price control and rationising are considered quite useful in controlling inflation. This is done by fixing the upper limit of the prices of the goods. Rationising aims at distributing consumption of scarce goods so as to make them available for large number of consumers. It is applied for essential consumer goods and to stabilize the prices. So this is how we go about Inflation. Instead of panicking, creating chaos and playing the blame game we can rather switch to the wiser ways of handling this inflation. All way through I feel it is more related to the regulated demand-supply chain, economic sentiments and judicial expendi-ture by the people. This is what can really curb inflation. Karanvir Gupta

IN BRIEF

Chidambaram visits Jharkhand, Odisha to review Maoist operations

Sonia hits out at Team Anna, commits Lokpal

Ranchi/Bhubaneswar, Nov 9 (IANS) Union Home Minister P. Chidam-baram Wednesday visited the Mao-ist-affected states of Jharkhand and Odisha to review operations against the rebels and also implementation of the developmental schemes in areas hit by Leftwing extremism.

In Ranchi, Chidambaram said he was reasonably satisfied with the im-plementation of Integrated Action Plan (IAP) in Jharkhand’s Maoist districts.

“I am reasonably satisfied with IAP implementation going in Jharkhand districts. More needs to be done. There has been significant success in Maoist operations between June and

October,” Chidambaram told report-ers.

He said “Jharkhand is one of the most Maoist affected states of the country. There are 14 battalions of CRPF and two battalions of Cobra forces are in Jharkhand. There are enough forces to deal with the Maoist menace in the state.”

The meeting was attended by Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda, state police Chief G.S. Rath and other senior got officials. Sources said Chidambaram asked the state government to implement central schemes properly in the Maoist af-fected districts.

Chamoli (Uttarakhand)/New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Wednesday hit out at Team Anna and said the party and the UPA government were com-mitted to a strong anti-corruption ombudsman (Lokpal). Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal expressed hope the bill would be passed in the winter session of parliament.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that Gandhi’s comments “reflects their views”.

Welcoming Sonia’s statement, read out in absentia in Chamoli (Utt-

arakhand), Kejriwal expressed hope “the Congress would keep its word and pass the legislation in the winter session starting Nov 22”.

Hitting out at Team Anna for threatening another agitation on the Lokpal bill, Sonia Gandhi said “Corruption cannot be fought by speeches, so I don’t understand why this noise.”

She also reminded Team Anna that “It was the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by me which had first started public consultations for a Lokpal”.

Congress targets Uttarakhand over Haridwar stampede

Kolkata, Nov 9 (IANS) Breaking the ice after three years, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday personally called up her predecessor and arch-foe Bud-dhadeb Bhattacharjee to invite him to the 17th Kolkata film festival starting Thursday. This is the first time the film festival is being held after Bhattacharjee demitted office following the Left Front’s rout in the April-May assembly elections. The festival is considered Bhattacharjee’s brainchild. Banerjee told Bhat-tacharjee, an avid film buff, “it will make me happy if you come for the inauguration”. However, the former chief minister cited pre-occupation with another programme which will keep him away.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Sanjay Chaudhary, a close aide of jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, was arrested in Dubai Wednesday on an Interpol red corner notice, the CBI said, adding it would initiate steps for his extradition. Chaudhary is ac-cused of investing Koda’s dubious funds by using his contacts in the alleged siphoning of public money.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday said the Haridwar stampede, in which at least 20 people were killed, occurred due to insufficient ar-rangements by the Uttarakhand administration. At least 20 people were killed and 40 injured in the stampede that occurred Tuesday when massive crowds had gathered near the Ganges for a religious meet in the temple town.

Notice to CBI on bail plea of Kanimozhi, four others

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought the CBI’s reply by Dec 1 on the bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and four other accused in the 2G scam and asked the jail officials for a medical report on accused Cineyug Films founder Karim Morani.

A notice was issued to the Cen-tral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after hearing arguments on behalf of Kanimozhi, Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar, Karim Morani and Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt. Ltd. directors Asif Balwa and Rajiv B. Agarwal.

The court also directed Tihar Jail superintendent to submit a medical report on Morani, who has sought bail on health grounds. Appearing for Kanimozhi, a senior advocate contended bench that the trial court ignored the CBI’s willingness to al-low bail to the five accused.

“A set of accused who came in ap-peal against the trail court bail de-nial order are not made accused in the principle charge sheet, in which former communications minister A. Raja is named,” said the defence counsel.

Mumbai, Nov 9 (IANS) The Bom-bay High Court Wednesday reject-ed the bail application of Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, one of the prime accused in the Malegaon 2008 blast case, a legal official said.

The court, while rejecting the bail application on grounds that “prima facie material was avail-able against” Purohit, said that a detailed order would be delivered soon, according to advocate Sharif Shaikh, an intervener appearing in the matter on behalf of family members of a victim in the blast.

“The state had opposed the bail plea stating that the investiga-tions into the Malegaon blast was transferred from the state Anti-

Terrorism Squad to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) vide a notification last April,” Shaikh told IANS.

He said the grounds for opposing bail were since the NIA investiga-tions are still continuing, granting bail to Purohit could hamper the ongoing probe into the terror in-cident in the minority-dominated town in Nashik district of north Maharashtra.

Prasad was among 11 accused in the blast case, including Sadhvi Pragnya Singh Thakur. Alleged to be linked to a right-wing organiza-tion, Purohit has been continuously in custody since his arrest for his role in the blast case.

Jammu, Nov 9 (IANS) The Uni-fied Command Wednesday evening asked the two panels looking into the question of revoking the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to “speed up” their recommenda-tions.

The two panels, with two Corps Commanders of the Indian Army, Director General of Police and

Principal Secretary, Home, were constituted in September last year to suggest the areas from where the Disturbed Area Act and AFSPA could be lifted. But the panels were not able to finalise their recommen-dations.

Official sources told IANS at the conclusion of more than three-hour-long meeting of the unified com-

mand held in the civil secretariat and chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior army com-manders, that it has been decided to “speed up the work and make rec-ommendations about the removal of AFSPA as early as possible”.

“However, no deadline has been suggested at the meeting,” the official told IANS.

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Su-preme Court will Nov 18 hear a peti-tion by suspended Indian Police Ser-vice officer Sanjiv Bhatt challenging the Gujarat government’s stand in a trial court which may adversely im-pact him in a 1990 case linked to a suspect’s death in Jamnagar district. An apex court bench said the mat-ter would be listed on its scheduled Nov 18 date after Bhatt’s counsel D. Sharma did not press for a stay of the trial court framing charges. The framing of charges was Tuesday put off by the Gujarat High Court till Nov 21. Sharma told the apex court that the high court had itself extended the stay and thus, there was no immediate need for action.

You will be able to relax and take deep calming breaths!

Balance is key at the moment!

Don’t stop believing!

It’s time for a mad pursuit! Live a little!

If you want something that bad then you’ve got to make the effort!

It’s interesting how, once someone has con-quered a fear, they want to go through the process all over again. Think about people who skydived, bungee jumped or went on a roller coaster for the first time. Once they’ve been congratulated for their bravery, they want to relive the experience. If you’re not already experiencing relief that has replaced something you were scared or concerned about, then you will very soon!

March 21 - April 19Aries

Whatever happens will happen for the good!

The opportunity that has presented itself is giving you plenty of ‘food for thought’ and is tempting to say the least. But what are you going to do? Part of you wants to play it safe. Another side of you wants to take a risk and hang the consequences. Something has reached a decisive stage and you appear to sense that taking an idea or proposal forward is going to require risk-taking on your part. The risk though is a calculated one that you can afford to take.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

We underestimate how any event that occurs is the result of a complex chain reaction of specifically-timed decisions and actions. Some of these can be virtually unnotice-able. So too could be your influence where a certain person is concerned. Something you say or do could have long term or possibly permanent implications. As long as whatever is said or done comes from your heart, all will be fine.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

We’re all more capable than we believe ourselves to be. When we state we are unable to do something, what we usually mean is we haven’t learned how to do it. There is something you are able to do if you’re willing to make even the tiniest effort. You’re of the opinion though that whatever-it-is is beyond your capabilities. If you push aside trepidation, you can make something special happen now.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

The sky indicates a need for you to make clear distinction between ‘wanting’ and ‘wishing’. Although the line between the two can be fuzzy, the difference between each stems from the level of need involved. ‘Want-ing’ usually has more immediacy attached to it than ‘wishing’. Decide now what you want in a certain area. Don’t wish for something to happen. Take the initiative and turn the ‘want’ into something that is within your reach.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

To speak up or remain quiet, that is the question. Your current dilemma sur-rounds speaking your mind, possibly defending yourself in some way or saying nothing and enjoying an easy life. Much depends on how personally you are taking an issue that has reared its head recently. The sky speaks now of a compromise that is on offer. Middle ground can be reached and an important point can be made if you want to make it.

You will get what’s truly yours soon enough!

Free your mind and the rest will follow!

Just remember what goes around comes around!

It’s time to dig deeper!

Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Have faith and things will happen for you!

In the same way someone who’s hungry won’t be interested in mental stimula-tion offered by a crossword puzzle, you’re experiencing conflict where satisfying a need is concerned. This could be due to a change in attitude toward what you believed you once required. Instead of becoming frustrated with inappropriateness of what’s on offer, understand that your priorities and needs have changed recently. This will result in you being presented soon with what you truly need.

June 21 - July 22Cancer

Some fairground rides work on the scientific basis that, if you’re spun around fast enough, you can remain immobilized with no fear of falling, unable to anything but move your eyes. Momentum you’ve been caught in has had you going round in circles and offered little or no ability for you to move in any way. The ride is coming to an end now. You might feel dizzy briefly but will soon regain control over that which you’ve had little or no control over.

July 23 - Aug. 22Leo

Precedents form a large part of our expecta-tions. We usually have a good idea where we stand with films that have certain actors in them or books written by certain authors. Your expectations could be leading you astray now though. As much as you believe you know all there is to a situation, you need to leave a bit of room to be surprised. There is more potential to something than you’re giving it credit for.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18Aquarius

What are you owed? Why are you owed it and from whom? These are a few questions being asked of you now. Be careful how you answer them though. Whilst you have in-vested time, energy and, above all, faith in a certain plan, such levels of investment don’t always guarantee an immediate return that justifies the effort. You are right to expect a result for something you’ve done. As long as you’re being realistic and patient, then all will be fine.

Feb. 19 - March 20Pisces

Anyone who has experienced a crowd surge at an outdoor concert knows how scary they can be. One person caught in forward-moving momentum of that scale is powerless to stop it. Recently, you’ve been caught in a similar situation with regard to events that have forced you to accept several changes. You have had no choice but to ‘go with the flow’. Pressure is unlikely to ease immediately but from now, you should have a clearer idea of where momentum is carrying you.

Dec. 22 - Jan. 19Capricorn

Month ofSagittarius

Waiting, they say, is the hardest part. Wait-ing, though, tends to be an integral part of any process. All positive change is gradual and provided we’ve done all that can be done to get a desired result, then any waiting we have to do is usually for a result beyond our control. Relax in the knowledge that you have done all that you can do where a plan is concerned. It will move forward and you won’t be waiting as long as you think you will for someone to do their bit!

Scientific Designing By Vaishali Shadangule

“Graduating in science was a phase where as a teenager I was still searching for a career of my interest. But as I grew, I realized that my real

passion rallied around designing clothes and I have followed my instincts ever since.”

And that's Vaishali Shadangule for you! Hers is a remarkable journey of making her presence felt in designing Indian ethnic wear over a relatively short period of time. Her brand Vaishalis is a clothing line that encompasses contemporary and traditional Indian wear, Indo-western and western wear. The label stands for modern attitude, comfort and innovative style stemming from a wealth of ideas that blends the modern techniques with the vastness of Indian textiles.

She draws her inspiration from the everyday experiences of her life that help her in arranging themes for her collection. With this as her basis, she chooses fabrics that go along with the concept and make the clothes look innovative yet easily wearable.

Talking about the fundamental changes that are happening in ethnic wear market in India Vaishali says “It is good to see that Indian designers are realizing the potential of the Indian culture and are ready to experiment with that, instead of repeating the same old stuff. Apart from that, now you see genuine efforts being made to work on the ethnic collections, which was not the case in the

past when ethnic clothing would always took a back seat. Designers today are more connected with traditional craftsmen and are looking to generate good business from it.”

Vaishali S Store

Though she has a strong hand in designing ethnic wear, she plans to expand her expertise into western clothing in the near future. “Till date I have used Indian fabric and elements in my collections, but I have always tried to modify them slightly to give a touch of western culture, or you can say the feel of universal silhouettes, to make them wearable to a larger section of the customers” shared Vaishali. She recently came up with her second standalone store (The first being in Mumbai) in New Delhi, and plans to open more in different parts of India as well as sell her designer wear in boutiques worldwide.

SportsChennai, Dec 11 (IANS) A maiden international century by Manoj Tewary powered In-dia to a 34-run win against the West Indies in the fifth and concluding game as the hosts wrapped up the One-day se-ries 4-1 on Sunday.

Tewary's 104 and his 117-run partnership with Virat Kohli (80 off 85 balls) that ended when the former retired due to cramps, helped India score 267 for six after losing two wickets in the first over. In reply, the West Indies caved in for 233 despite a power-packed 119 by Kieron Pollard and 53 by Andre Russell.

Pollard, in notching his first ODI century, to an ex-tent redeemed himself on an otherwise disappointing tour, but his heroics along with that of Russell did nothing to mask the gap between the two teams though the West Indies, on occasions did run the hosts

close as they did on Sunday night.

India could not have asked for a worse start than losing two wickets in the very first over as opener Ajinkya Ra-hane and Parthiv Patel were dismissed by Kemar Roach in his first over. Both were done in by the low bounce as Ra-hane was trapped in front and Patel's stumps were knocked over.

Thereafter, it was fairly smooth sailing for the Indi-ans as Tiwary and Gautam Gambhir (31) put on 83 for the third wicket followed by a 117-run partnership for the fourth wicket between the centurion and Virat Kohli (80 off 85 balls).

Though India lost a few wickets at the death, they looked to be in the clear with a par total on a pitch that was expected to get slower and lower.

Australia series a different ball game: Gambhir

Chennai, Dec 11 (IANS) While expressing happiness over India's 4-1 series win against the West In-dies on Sunday, stand-in captain Gautam Gambhir cautioned that the forthcoming tour of Australia would be a "different ball game" that will put to test both the tech-nique and mental toughness of the players.

"It always helps to get runs un-der your belt, but in Australia, those are different conditions. We all know this is not what we are going to get in Australia. The Aus-tralians are tough nuts to crack and will come hard at us," he said at a post-match media interaction

here after India beat the West In-dies in the fifth and concluding game.

"In Australia, your mental toughness will be tested the maxi-mum. You will be getting a qual-ity attack and they will be coming hard at you. I think one good thing is the guys that have gone early (to Australia) will be able to acclima-tise (to the conditions). And we're playing two practice games this time," he said.

Gambhir also sought to play down his captaincy record of six wins out of six by saying that he was only as good as the teams he had.

India retain SAFF Cup, pound four goals on 10-man Afghanistan

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) India dominated the last 20 minutes of the SAFF Cup football final against a 10-man Afghanistan at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday, thrashing them 4-0 for their sixth title.

The vastly-improved Afghanistan were very much in the game till the 68th minute but a contentious pen-alty and a controversial red-card to goalkeeper Hameedullah Yousufzari by Singapore referee Sukhbir Singh ended the gritty Afghan's fairy-tale journey in the tournament.

Sunil Chettri converted the penalty in the 71st and helped India to add two more through Clifford Miranda (79th), Jeje Lalpeklua (80th) to crush Afghanistan. Substitute Sushil Singh (90+) struck in the injury time to end the game in style for the defending champions. Chettri emerged the top scorer with seven goals.

The nippy Afghans were clearly the better team and had the match in con-trol till the 68th minute. But the pen-alty and the red-card to Yousufzari, for pushing the referee, proved the turn-ing point.

For India the penalty was lucky as Jeje was fouled on the edge of the box by defender Faisal Safa. The decision infuriated the Aghan goalkeeper, who pushed the referee. Play was held up for three minutes as Yousufzari and coach Mohammed Yusuf Kargar furi-ously protested but their efforts were futile.

Afghan football coach Mohammad Yusuf Kargar Sunday accused Singa-pore referee Sukhbir Singh of being biased towards India.

"The referee was partial to us. I don't know whether he is a Sikh or a Hindu but he supported them (India). We shall write to AFC (Asian Football Confederation) on the incident as to how such a young and inexperienced referee is officiating in the final. His judgment cost us the game," he added.

India captain Climax Lawrence, however, disagreed and said that the referee was right in red carding the goalkeeper.

"The rules are simple. You cannot the touch the referee in any circum-stance. I think the red card was justi-fied," he said.

England-Egypt to battle it out in Punj Lloyd squash

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) The third edition of the Punj Lloyd PSA Squash Masters beginning today is set to host six top-10 players despite the last minute pullout of World Number One and defending champion Nick Mat-thew. Saurav Ghoshal will spearhead India's challenge in the $165,000 event.

The battle for top honours will once again be amongst players from Egypt and England.

World No.2 James Willstrop will lead the English pack in the absence of Matthew and going by current form a few would like to bet against him for the title.

Four-time World Champion and last year's semifinalist Amr Shabana has given the tournament a miss but Egypt will have enough representation to stake claim for the title.

2008 World Champion winner Ramy Ashour, who couldn't play last year due to injury, has been given the top seeding though his current rank-ing stands at five. Karim Darwish, ranked five, is the second seed with Mohammed El Shorbagy, the other top Egyptian in the fray, at No. 8.

World No. 3 Gregory Gautier is the lone French player in the top-10.

Twenty-sixth ranked Ghoshal lost in the pre-quarters in the previ-ous edition and will have to produce something special to better his perfor-mance. He meets America's Julian Il-lingworth in his opening round match Tuesday.

Wild card Siddharth Suchde is the other Indian in the main draw and faces Gautier in the first round on Monday.

Gaurav Gill clinches National Rally Championship

Bhubaneshwar, Dec 11 (IANS) Gaurav Gill (co-driver Musa Sher-if) of Team MRF sealed the overall title in the 2011 Indian National Rally Championship with a round to spare as the 30-year old Delhi-based driver won the inaugural Rally of Odisha on Sunday.

The victory put Gill 72 points ahead of his nearest rival and team-mate Amittrajit Ghosh (Ashwin Naik) and regained the National crown after a lapse of two seasons.

Also clinching the National title was Aniruddha Rangnekar (Anoop Kumar) who topped in the 1600cc class after finishing sec-ond behind Hanoosh Surapaneni (Ravindra Kumar) here.

With his third INRC crown in sight, Gill, driving the Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia (Group N+), ensured

that he will survive the final day without a mishap, but despite the obvious caution, he still topped the time charts on Sunday.

Gill took his tally to 172 points while Ghosh moved to 100 as he finished third overall behind Dr.Yogeshwar Gill (Jeevarathi-nam).

In the 2000cc (Group N) class, Karna Kadur (Somonnita Ghosh) took the lead in the championship stakes over veteran Rahul Kan-thraj (Vivek Bhatt) despite his sec-ond place finish here.

Meanwhile, talented Manga-lore teenager Dean Mascaren-has (Shruptha Padival), winner of the K-1000 rally in Bangalore earlier this year, chalked up his second success of the sea-son by topping the 1400cc class (Star Cup).

MLS player conducts football campRanchi, Dec 11 (IANS) A group of children from a village in the out-skirts of the capital city here have spent some quality time with Ma-jor League Soccer (MLS) player Jeb Brovsky, learning the skills of foot-ball.

Around 110 boys and girls from village Rukka were part of the two-day football camp set-up by Yuva, an organisation that trains young girls in football and use the sport for their development. Three camps were or-ganised on Friday and Saturday.

Brovsky was amazed by the en-thusiasm of the children. "It's very hard to find similar level of passion, commitment and enthusiasm with children in North America. These children remind me why I decided to play football," said Brovsky.

Brovsky was accompanied by Cait-lin Phelan a sports medicine profes-sional and a supporter of Brovsky's Non-Profit organization Peace Pan-demic, spending time with the chil-dren educating them about health, hygiene and physical fitness.

Barca win 'El Classico' to go top of Spanish La Liga

Madrid, Dec 11 (IANS) Barcelona came back after conceding the quickest 'EL Classico' goal to beat Real Madrid 3-1 to go top of the table, courtesy their better head-to-head record over Madrid in the Spanish La Liga.

Pep Guardiola's men had the worst possible start in the crunch tie as they went down to a Karim Benzema goal just 23 seconds after the start. A miskick from Barca keeper Victor Valdes landed at Mesut Ozil's feet whose deflected shot rebounded straight to Ben-zema who slotted home from close

range to give Madrid the lead in Santiago Bernabea on Saturday.

Madrid pressed hard for the sec-ond goal but diminutive Chilean, Alexis Sanchez struck in the 30th minute against the run of play to bring the Catalans back in the game.

Xavi Hernandez's deflected shot gave Barca the lead in the 53rd minute and showed why they are regarded as the best club team in the world. The newest member of the Barca team Cesc Fabre-gas grabbed the third in the 66th

minute to end Real Madrid's 15-match winning run and strike a potentially decisive blow in the race for the Primera Division title.

Elsewhere, Levante consoli-dated their fourth spot thanks to a 1-0 win over Sevilla. The win takes Levante five points clear of Sevilla.

Ruben Castro scored a brace in injury time to give Real Betis their first win in 11 games as they over-came Valencia 2-1 at the Benito Villamarin.

periods of domination. Spain argu-ably had the better of the first half and could easily have been ahead when Roc Oliva and David Alegre saw their efforts miss the target. Newly-crowned FIH Young Player of the Year Matthew Swann also produced an outstanding tackle on Spain's Edi Tubau as the striker was about to shoot in the dying mo-ments of the first half.

Tempers began to flair at the start of the second half and umpire Hamish Jamson informed team captains Jamie Dwyer and Santi Freixa that their sides need to cool it. As the match pro-gressed, the world champions began to assert their authority and went close to opening the scoring through Timothy Deavin and Jason Wilson, but the outstanding Spanish defence held firm.

Five time FIH Player of the Year Jamie Dwyer was also pleased with the performance of his team. "I am very proud to win it again. Spain came here with a point to prove after the disappointment of the Euros and

did just that so we are very happy to win."

Final standings: Gold: Aus-tralia, Silver: Spain, Bronze: The Netherlands.

Salman was not biased towards me: Mahek ChahalNew Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS): Mahek Chehl had ugly fights with her "Bigg Boss" inmate Akashdeep Saigal and things became so unpleasant between them that a patch up had to be effected.
