Motorists passing by honked their hornsin solidarity with the demonstrators.Marcos, his wife and their cronies plunderedup to $10 billion from state coffers andplunged the Philippines into crippling debtduring his rule, according to governmentinvestigators and historians. The dictatoralso oversaw widespread human rightsabuses to maintain his control of the coun-try and enable his plundering, with thou-sands of people killed and tortured, previ-ous Philippine governments said. Anti-cor-ruption watchdog TransparencyInternational in 2004 named Marcos thesecond most corrupt leader of all time, behind Indonesian dictator Suharto.

Political resurrectionAfter Marcos died in Hawaii in 1989, his

family was allowed to return and began itspolitical resurrection.

Imelda became a congresswoman andfended off all corruption charges againsther. Imee and Ferdinand “Bongbong”Marcos Jnr also became influential politi-cians. However previous presidents hadrefused to allow the dictator to be buried inthe heroes’ cemetery because of his crimes,so the family kept the preserved body in aglass casket at his home in the northernprovince of Ilocos Norte.

The family’s fortunes changed with theelection of Duterte, a long-time ally of theMarcos family, as president in May this year.

He said Marcos deserved to be buried atthe heroes’ cemetery because he had beena president and a veteran of World War II.

Duterte also said he owed loyalty to thefamily because his father had served in theMarcos government and the family hadhelped fund his election campaign.

Duterte, who was in Peru for a globalleaders summit on Friday, again sought tojustify his decision, as he urged “forgiveness”.

“I was just being legally strict about it.President Marcos was a president for so longand he was a soldier. So that’s about it,” hesaid.—AFP

During his campaign, Trump said he wouldpull the U.S. out of the Paris pact on climatechange. Duterte’s anti-drug campaign that has left morethan 4,000 suspected addicts and pushers deadsince July. They said the killings can be a basis tocharge him for crimes against humanity beforethe Netherlands-based court.

Duterte said he has intentionally used foullanguage ó including calling Obama a “son of abitch” ó because Obama has trivialized thePhilippines’ drug problem when there arealready around 4 million Filipinos addicted todrugs. The country has a population of morethan 103 million.—AP
