Institute of Soil and Environmental Quality and UD Department of Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty

CREDIT: 6 Clock Hours As the global population grows, so does the demand for food and other plant-based products. Advances in the science of plant biology will help meet these challenges. Plants are also important to our aesthetic and natural environments, and designing landscapes is a challenging and exciting field of study. Delaware’s soils are natural resources that we rely upon to produce food, sustain healthy, biologically diverse natural ecosystems, protect water quality and provide an aesthetically pleasing landscape for our communities. Understanding our soil resources and managing them well requires science-based knowledge of the biology, chemistry and physics of the soil environment. This workshop will illustrate how knowledge of modern plant biology, landscape horticulture and design, and soil biology, chemistry and physics can be used to relate basic scientific principles to issues that are familiar and important to high school science students. Lesson plans and/or laboratory guides that meet state science standards will be provided.

CREDIT: 30 Clock Hours Biotech and technology is included in the Delaware teaching standards and the DSTP but what is it? Root beer, bread, cheese, and yogurt are all examples of applied biotech technology that we use in everyday life, yet most of us would not call it biotechnology. Applying BT, or pyrethrum, for garden pests or using ethanol for gas is biotechnology. Over 30% of the world’s economy is based in the sciences associated with biotechnology. This course will give you content and experiences to introduce your students to the real world of biotechnology. Much of the course will be experiential learning about what biotech is and how Delaware colleges, universities and industries research and produce biotech products and what is in store for the future. This course is part of EPSCoR, a state wide effort to improve biotechnology in Delaware. Room and board are covered by the EPSCoR grant. There is no charge to attend this workshop. Water is critical to life as we know it and your watershed is your personal life support system. For most of the public, a water problem means you call the plumber, but the reality is never that simple. As educators we need to understand how watersheds work, how they are impacted by society, the need for biodiversity and how to pass that on to our students. Included will be discussions and activities on: local flora and fauna; societal impacts; new curricula and activities; simple water testing; and a field trip via canoe on the James Branch. Presenters include University of Delaware faculty, DNREC scientists and exemplary teachers. Course includes relevant knowledge content, materials and methods. There is no charge to attend this workshop unless you choose graduate credit. Please use the registration form at www.ocean.udel.edu/public/prodevregform.pdf. Call Jay Taylor, (302) 645-4103, to make room reservations. If you do not select a roommate when reserving a room, one will be assigned to you. The registration deadline is July 24, 2006. You must also register through the Delaware Teacher Center.

A watershed is the area of land that catches rain and snow and drains or seeps into a marsh, stream, river, lake or groundwater. You’re sitting in a watershed now. Homes, farms, ranches, forests, small towns, big cities and more can make up watersheds. Some cross county, state, and even international borders. Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes. Some are millions of square miles, others are just a few acres. Just as creeks drain into rivers, watersheds are nearly always part of a larger watershed. 12

DIBELS: DYNAMIC INDICATORS OF BASIC EARLY LITERACY SKILLS WHO: Reading Specialists, Regular and

Special Education Teachers 1-6 INSTRUCTOR: Reading ASSIST® Institute Instructor CREDIT: 6 Clock Hours The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills. The measures were developed upon the essential early literacy domains discussed in both the National Reading Panel (2000) and National Research Council (1998) reports to assess student development of phonological awareness, alphabetic understanding and automaticity and fluency with the code. Each measure has been thoroughly researched and demonstrated to be reliable and valid indicators of early literacy development and predictive of later reading proficiency to aid in the early identification of students who are not progressing as expected. When used as recommended, the results can be used to evaluate individual student development as well as provide grade-level feedback toward validated instructional objectives. There is a fee of $150.00. July 13, 2006 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. August 11, 2006 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Coordinators, School and Family Programs, Historic Odessa Foundation

CREDIT: 3 Clock Hours Would you like to take your class back in time to the 18th century? The Historic Houses of Odessa is an enclave of historic structures located in the small residential community of Odessa, Delaware. Relatively untouched by the development typical of other areas, it offers a unique and well-documented picture of 18th and 19th century lifestyles in a rural village that played a vital part in America’s commercial history. Participants in this workshop will experience four different aspects of 18th century living. In School Days you will participate in lessons using quill pens, slates and chalk. Learn about different ways of preserving food, observe period cooking tools and techniques, and discuss how kitchens are different today in 18th Century Hearth Cooking. The Corbits: A Genteel Quaker Family illustrates the lifestyle of a typical wealthy English planter living in a beautiful mansion while Children: Chores and Leisure shows how it was necessary for children of working class families to participate in household chores in order for the family to survive. These programs are samples of those available for your students. By immersing young visitors in an authentic and interactive 18th century setting, we give students the experience of “walking in the shoes” of their 18th century counterparts. Please meet at the Collins-Sharp House on Second Street.

Franklin Institute On March 18, 2006 forty-five Delaware educators spent the day at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA. The group visited the Body Worlds exhibit, viewed a show at the Fels Planetarium, had the opportunity to see an IMAX movie and learned about programs available to teachers and students through a presentation at the Teacher Leadership Center. Following are some of the comments made that day: “The exhibits were fascinating and educational!” “It was fabulous to have access to the wealth of resources in the Franklin Institute!” “I was truly impressed with the Body Worlds exhibition. “This exhibit is a must see for all students and teachers of human anatomy.” “...exhibit was incredibly fascinating...” “I learned a ton and had a blast!” “…nice day, nice trip, nice people…”
