Islanders (27-3). Junior guard GabeKalscheur scored 15 of his 20 points in thesecond half when the Islanders outscored thePackers (29-3) by 20 points.

DeLaSalle has won 11 state champi-onships in various enrollment classes sinceclaiming its first in 1985. The Islanders alsowon in 1988, 1998, 1999, and 2006. Thisyear also marked the ninth state champi-onship for longtime coach Dave Thorson, who led the Islanders to 15 state tournamentberths since 1997.

As they were in the previous two statetournament games, the Islanders were offand running in the championship, building a9-0 lead in the first three minutes. DeLaSallewas poised on offense and played pressure-packed defense. Austin, which had fits withDeLaSalle’s half-court defense, endured coldshooting and turnovers in their opening pos-sessions and didn’t score its first basket untilnearly five minutes had elapsed.

The Packers found their rhythm, however, and pulled to within five points midwaythrough the first half. But the Islanderspushed the advantage back to 10, before set-tling for a 31-23 lead at the break. The

Islanders didn’t quit there; they openedthe second half on a 10-0 run that pushed theadvantage to 41-23. The Packers could get nocloser than 12 points the rest of the way.

Junior guard Both Gach led the Packerswith 14 points while junior guard DuothGach chipped in 10. It was the third time inthis current spree of championships thatDeLaSalle defeated Austin for a title. The others came in 2013 and 2014.

In the third-place game, Marshall sprintedto a 23-point lead at the half and went on todefeat Columbia Heights 83-37. The Tigersshot 56.4 percent in the first half to 19 per-cent for the Hylanders.

Senior forward Weston Baker McGrath led

the Tigers with 20 points, 10 rebounds andfive blocks. Senior forward Mitchell Suekeradded 19 points and five rebounds. Juniorforward Wendell Matthews had 14 pointsand 11 rebounds for Columbia Heights.

In the other semifinal, Austin earned achance to win the school’s first boys basket-ball championship in nearly six decades fol-lowing a 73-53 victory over Marshall. DuothGach put on an offensive show, completewith thrilling dunks mixed in with three-point shooting to finish with 29 points.Senior forward Oman Oman chipped in 14points for the Packers.

Class AAAAApple Valley entered the Class AAAA tour-

nament as the No. 3 seed. Ahead of theEagles were No. 1 Champlin Park and No. 2Maple Grove, teams they had lost to duringthe regular season. The Eagles chased awayany lingering memories of those losses withvictories over both en route to capturing theClass AAAA championship for the third timein five seasons.

Junior guard Tre Jones was dominant onboth ends of the floor, scoring 24 points andgrabbing 18 rebounds, including 14 on thedefensive end, as Apple Valley posted a 60-54victory over Champlin Park in the champi-onship game. Senior forward Mason Morseadded 12 points including a baseline layupwith 27 seconds remaining in regulation thatgave the Eagles a four-point advantage.

Apple Valley (30-2) won previous ClassAAAA championships in 2013 and 2015.Champlin Park (31-1) was attempting tobecome the first undefeated Class AAAAchampion since 2009 when Hopkins was 31-0.

The Rebels had a 47-41 lead with 7:30 leftin regulation. Senior guard Marcus Hill was aplaymaker with 15 points, five rebounds andtwo assists, and senior center Theo John wasfearless in the low post with 12 points andeight blocks. Senior guard McKinley Wrightfinished with 14 points, four assists, and fourrebounds.

But Apple Valley chipped away and took a50-49 lead on a jumper by Morse with 4:53left, and the Eagles expanded that margin tothree on a jumper by Jones 47 seconds later. But the score would teeter-totter until AppleValley made its final move with 1:18 left.
