First, I would like to note that the new proposal is a massive improvement over the National Park Service (NPS) initial proposal. I appreciate the NPS’ willingness to go back to the drawing board and look at this project a second time. It truly appears that the community was heard from in this process. Fort Hunt Park is not only a national asset, but it is also a treasured community assets here in Mt. Vernon. It is a community meeting place, a picnic site for families, organizations and businesses, a park where people meet and play, and a recreational facility. I taught my kids how to ride bikes on the loop. It is also a historical site. All of these needs must be balanced. In terms of historical interpretation, I have repeatedly told park staff that Fort Hunt Park also served a site for local schools. Many children were educated in temporary buildings on park property while our area was experiencing a housing boom and there were inadequate facilities. I have seen zero mention of that in any materials. While I recognize that Fort Hunt Park is a national asset, it also has local connections which should be honored in its history. I would hope that the existing historical structures could be made more accessible to the public. When I was kid, we climbed on many buildings back in the woods, but they were not really accessible to the public. The guard tower has always been closed. It is my hope that they can opened and fully enjoyed, interpreted and appreciated. It is also my impression that the NPS hopes to increase visitors to the park by enhancing the historical displays. Given the park’s proximity to the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail, I would hope that improvements would include segregated bike lanes at the entrance and up to the oneway segment of the loop along with consideration of bike safety as the existing point where the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail crosses the exit from the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
