COMMUNICATIONCOMMUNICATION

Communication is the process of sharing information. In a simplistic form information is

sent from a sender or encoder to a receiver or decoder.

In a more complex form feedback links a sender to a receiver. This requires a symbolic

activity, sometimes via a language.

Communication development is the development of processes enabling one to understand

what others say (or sign or write) and speak (or sign or write, translate sounds and symbols

into meaning, and learn the syntax of the language.

Communication is based on the idea of respect, promises, and the want for social

improvement.

History of communication theory

In the history of philosophy, Aristotle first addressed the problem of communication and

attempted to work out a theory of it in The Rhetoric. He was primarily focused on the art

of persuasion.

Humanistic and rhetorical viewpoints and theories dominated the discipline prior to thetwentieth century, when more scientific methodologies and insights from psychology,

sociology, linguistics and advertising began to influence communication thought and

practice.

COGNITION COGNITION The term "cognition" refers to all processes by which the sensory input is transformed, reduced,

elaborated, stored, recovered, and used. It is concerned with these processes even when they operate

in the absence of relevant stimulation, as in images and hallucinations... Given such a sweeping

definition, it is apparent that cognition is involved in everything a human being might possibly do; thatevery psychological phenomenon is a cognitive phenomenon. But although cognitive psychology is

concerned with all human activity rather than some fraction of it, the concern is from a particular point

of view. Other viewpoints are equally legitimate and necessary. Dynamic psychology, which begins with

motives rather than with sensory input, is a case in point. Instead of asking how a man's actions and

experiences result from what he saw, remembered, or believed, the dynamic psychologist asks how

they follow from the subject's goals, needs, or instincts

PERCEPTIONPERCEPTION

General perception Psychophysics Attention and Filter theories (the ability to focus

mental effort on specific stimuli whilst excluding other stimuli from consideration)

Pattern recognition (the ability to correctly interpret ambiguous sensory information)

Object recognition Time sensation (awareness and estimation of the passage of time)

Visual Visual communicationcommunication - the communication of ideas through the visual display of

information. Primarily associated with two dimensional images, it includes: art, signs, photography,

typography, drawing fundamentals, colour and electronic resources. Recent research in the field

has focused on web design and graphically oriented usability. It is part of what a graphic designer does to communicate visually with the audience.

The primary tool by which man has visualised ideas is through the usage of writing and, by

extension, type: Writing/type is the visual manifestation of the spoken word. And words are what we

communicate with. Thus it is no overstatement when we say that type is the essence of visual

communication and by extension of visual communication design. Type, where it is present, is simply the

single most important element that you put on a page, since it inherently carries the essence of

communication and communication is what our subject of study as graphic/multimedia designers is all

about. Thus, the history of visual communication, i.e. the history of the visualisation of the spoken word, will largely follow the development of typographic systems, with a special focus on the Latin typographic

system, given that this is the one that we are operating under. Although the primary focus will be on

typographic elements and methodologies, the course will, of course, also cover pictorial aspects of visual

communication, such as illustration, illumination, photography, shapes, colour etc as and where they

pertain to the essence of the subject

Visual communication as the name suggests is communication through

visual aid and is described as the conveyance of ideas and information in

forms that can be read or looked upon. Visual communication solely

relies on vision, and is primarily presented or expressed with two

dimensional images, it includes: SIGNS, TYPOGRAPHY, DRAWING,

GRAPHIC DESIGN, ILLUSTRATION, COLOUR AND ELECTRONIC

RESOURCES. It also explores the idea that a visual message

accompanying text has a greater power to inform, educate, or persuade a

person or audience

The term 'visual presentation' is used to refer to the actual presentation of information through a visible medium such as textor images. Recent research in the field has focused on web design and graphically-oriented usability. Graphic designers also use

methods of visual communication in their professional practice. Visual communication on the World Wide Web is perhaps the

most important form of communication that takes place while users are surfing the Internet. When experiencing the web, one

uses the eyes as the primary sense, and therefore the visual presentation of a website is very important for users to understand

the message or of the communication taking place

VISUAL COMMUNICATIONVISUAL COMMUNICATION

The last type of communication out of the four types of communication, is the visual communication. Visual

communication is visual display of information, like, topography, photography, signs, symbols and designs. Television

and video clips are the electronic form of visual communication.

These are the four types of communication. The different types of communication media are increasing day by day toensure clarity and eliminate the ambiguity in communication.

VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Verbal communication includes sounds, words, language and speaking. Language is said to have originated

from sounds and gestures. There are many languages spoken in the world. The bases of languageformation are: gender, class, profession, geographical area, age group and other social elements. Speaking

is an effective way of communicating and is again classified into two types viz. interpersonal

communication and public speaking.

NONNON--VERBAL COMMUNICATIONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

Non-verbal communication involves physical ways of communication, like, tone of the voice, touch, smell and body

motion.Creative and aesthetic non-verbal communication includes singing, music, dancing and sculpturing. Symbols and

sign language are also included in non-verbal communication. Body language is a non-verbal way of communication.

Body posture and physical contact convey a lot of information. Body posture matters a lot when you are communicating

verbally to someone. Folded arms and crossed legs are some of the signals conveyed by a body posture. Physical contact,

like, shaking hands, pushing, patting and touching expresses the feeling of intimacy. Facial expressions, gestures and eye

contact are all different ways of communication. Reading facial expressions can help you know a person better

WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONWRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Written communication is writing the words which you want to communicate. Good written communication is

essential for business purposes. Written communication is practiced in many different languages. E-mails, reports,

articles and memos are some of the ways of using written communication in business. The written communication canbe edited and amended many times before it is communicated to the second party to whom the communication is

intended. This is one of the main advantages of using writing as the major means of communication in business

activity. Written communication is used not only in business but also for informal communication purposes. Mobile

SMS is an example of informal written communication.

LANGUAGELANGUAGEA system of arbitrary signal, such as voice sound, such as intonations or pitch, gestures or written symbols whichcommunicate thoughts of feelings. Animals do not have a written form of a language to communicate with each

other. Animal communication can be considered as a separated language. Human spoken and written languages can

be described as a system of symbols (sometimes known as lexemes) and the grammars (rules) by which the symbols

are manipulated. More than 1000 languages Humans and computer programmes have also constructed other

languages, including constructed languages such as Esperanto, Idol, Interlingua, Klingon, programming languages

and various mathematical formalisms.

MASS MEDIAThe media specifically conceived and designed to reach a very large audience (typically at least as large as the whole

population of a nation state)

It was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio network and mass-circulation newspapers and

magazines.
