CAREER DEVELOPMENT

LAYING THE FOUNDATION Deciding on a major early in your college career can be a difficult, sometimes overwhelming, task. That’s why the Major Exploration Fair is such a valuable foundational pillar of the D.R.I.V.E. For Success program. With an open structure similar to the fall Career Fair, student-athletes were provided with a relaxed, comfortable environment in order to explore a plethora of majors and minors offered at The University of Alabama. The advisors provided beneficial information for choosing the right academic program to fit their career interests as well as professional opportunities resulting from a degree in their program of interest. A new addition to the event this year, campus organizations provided a chance to receive valuable professional development by joining their groups. Not only was it tremendous for freshman student-athletes to meet academic advisors from over 30 majors and minors on campus, but it also afforded them the opportunity to interact with representatives from nine campus organizations in which they can be involved.

“The Major Exploration Fair was a great
experience. I received more information
from the College of Communication &
Information Sciences representatives.
That is my major, and I was excited to
learn about career opportunities that
graduates typically puruse as well as
what I can be doing now to put myself in
the best position to be successful in the
future.”

FALL CAREER PANELS END ON HIGH NOTE To conclude the fall edition of the Career Panel Series, the D.R.I.V.E.
For Success staff hosted the Health Sciences Career Panel. The 12
student-athletes who attended the event gained incredible insight into
how to be successful in a variety of health science fields. Phenomenal
information was shared on how to take advantage of job shadowing/
internships, preparation for professional school, and what to look for
once entering the workforce.

With a competitive job market, student-athletes are seeing the value of continuing their
education and obtaining an advanced degree. Some are able to do so while still competing
here at The Capstone! The Graduate School Preparation Workshop was designed to
encourage student-athletes to continue the discussion of furthering their education by
providing valuable information toward this pursuit. The series consisted of a panel of three
individuals from different areas of the UA Graduate School who shared information
regarding their specific programs.

GRADUATE SCHOOL PREP WORKSHOP
"This summer I had another incredible experience with Nike's
Global Brand Marketing team for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. In the summer of 2015, I was a part of the
planning stages of the marketing campaign for the Rio
Olympics. This past summer, I was able to continue building
momentum from the previous summer and execute the UNLIMITED campaign that
we created. The campaign encouraged all athletes, from young kids to professionals,
to embrace an “UNLIMITED” mindset. The goal was to show athletes of all skill levels
that everyone has the same unlimited potential when they are born, so make the best
of it every day. It was an eye-opening but extremely gratifying experience to see this
campaign come to life in real-time, knowing that I was a part of each and every piece
that was used for the pinnacle of sport. This includes anything from commercials to
the uniforms in which the athlete’s competed. I cannot say enough about the
experiences I've had with Nike and the Rio Olympics."

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The final Crimson Catalyst group meeting of the fall semester
focused first on understanding types of cultures and common
themes within each culture. Illustrated in the graphic to the left are
the “8 Kinds of Cultures” in Jeff Janssen’s Team Captain’s
Leadership Manual. According to Janssen, low relationships
with low results lead to a corrosive culture, whereas championship
cultures are defined by placing high value on relationships with
high results. Understanding the team culture will allow the young
leaders to properly address their team-specific situations to
enhance them.
Additionally, the Crimson Catalysts discussed the role
communication - both verbal and non-verbal - plays in the
development of a culture. To be an
effective communicator, it’s not just
about how the message is conveyed to
be received and understood by someone
in exactly the way it was intended. It’s
also how the other person listens to
gain the full meaning of what’s being
said and to make the other individual
feel heard and understood.
Former N.C. State basketball coach, Jim Valvano, is probably known more for his famous
“Never Give Up” speech at the ESPY Awards hosted by ESPN every summer. However, it
was his 1983 National Championship team that helped teach the Legacy Leaders the
importance of having a vision through a clip from the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary series
on Valvano, titled “Survive and Advance”. The clip focused on Coach Valvano’s audacious
vision of winning a national championship and the unorthodox tactics he used to
accomplish such a feat. What most people do not know is that Valvano set aside one
practice every year where there were no basketballs, no drills, no plays run – all he and his
players did was practice cutting the nets down, simulating a national championship
celebration. It served as a great illustration of how important vision is no matter the
circumstances endured.
To further illustrate this point, group members were
asked to put a puzzle together with a different set of
circumstances: Group 1 had a different box top than
what matched their puzzle; Group 2 received the pieces
of their puzzle but no box top to work with; Group 3 was able to see their box top
for just a moment; Group 4 was able to use their box top until completion. The
activity demonstrated the value of having the box top—or a vision– to
successfully complete the task at hand. The senior leaders further discussed the
importance of having the right box top, recognizing that when members of a
team have conflicting visions, their focus can be misguided. Related to the bigger
picture of an entire team, no puzzle was complete unless all the pieces were
present and in the proper spot, just as a team is not complete unless each person
is executing their role to the best of their ability.
