Greetings Disciples at Luther Memorial,

Fear not! For I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be for everyone; for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: you will find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. -Luke 2:10-12

The angel speaks to us again as we end this year of ministry at LMC. Fear not, good people! God is working here, through us, through you and your gifts, talents, and abilities.

And we’re ready to celebrate that at the Congregational Meeting on January 8th following the one service that day at 10am. We’ll celebrate all that God is doing and begin to ask ourselves what God might be calling out of us into the coming year.

So, in this time of gift-giving, what do you think God is asking LMC to give to this neighborhood, this city, this world next year? We give God praise and worship. We give our neighborhood food and clothes. We give our city a community center where musicians, athletes, youth, and community groups meet.

But what is next? What are we called to build on? Where are we called to expand? A before school program? An after school program? A full-time Youth Director (as Brian is doing such a great job!)? Expanded music ministries? Youth choir? A warming center? Hosting those experiencing homelessness in our walls? Planting a new church in the city that meets on some other day than Sunday? Expanding our relationship with neighbor-ing churches like St. Luke’s in Logan Square? More topical book/discussion groups?

It sounds exciting. It sounds scary. It sounds like just the thing for our community of faithful. It sounds just like what God is calling out of us.

Be not afraid! The Christ is coming again as this body of Christ moves in this world. We’re not perfect, but God is working through us.

So, child of God, what are we going to do?

See you in church…bring your Bibles,

YOUTH NEWS

Briana TravisCelebration Band Director

Luther Memorial Church of Chicago

A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers in the music program this year! I especially want to thank the "regular" (although, some

may call them odd) members of the Celebration band that dedicate their time every Sunday morning and most Tuesday evenings to

bring us to a worshipful state of mind. I hope you all realize what a blessing these people are! THANK YOU, Andres Hernandez, Sean

Heneghan, Val Kolovos, Rob Klein, Jon Peppler and Joe and Amy Knis-pel; you are a blessing to me and to the congregation of LMC!

This Christmas Eve, at our 5pm Family Service, we will be featur-ing musicians that are a part of our LMC Family that we haven't

previously heard from. I'm excited to have Nicole and Justin Martinez joining us as instrumentalists and Ashley Usher-Cole-man joining me as a vocalist for this very festive service. You will hear some of LMC's old favorites as well as some refresh-ing new arrangements of traditional Christmas music that we

wouldn't be able to do without these additional musicians.

Hello Church!

Calling one, calling all! I know I've spoken to a few of you recently about helping out with the Youth Group, but I'm curious if there are more. If you have any interest in help-ing with the Youth please let me know at [email protected]. There are a number of ways that we could work your talents in to helping us out so please let me know...oh and they're just teenagers, I promise they don't bite ;)

Thank you!!

The Youth will be having their Christ-mas party on TuesdayDec. 20th follow-ing the Holden Evening Prayer service. Please check with Brian on whether to bring decorations, cookies, candies or other goodies! Anyone interested in being a chaperone? Please contact Brian at [email protected]. Merry

Christmas!!

MUSICAL MUSINGSWhy We Need A New Organ

Lutherans are known for being a singing people. “For [Martin] Luther, music was central to his theology.” 1 “It was ‘a gift from God, instilled and implanted in all creatures. . . . from the be-

ginning of the world. Nothing is without sound or harmony,’ but the human voice is the most wonderful gift of all. Therefore, ‘next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise.’”2 St. Augustine once said, “‘the one who sings prays twice.’ As the church, we possess an enor-mous and wonderful treasure chest of hymns, songs, chants, psalms, and canticles. In sing-

ing them, by participating and adding our own voices to the song, we make them our own. We join the song of all creation, of Hannah, of Miriam and Moses, of Zechariah, of Simeon, of Anna, of Mary, of our Christ.”3 For Lutherans, even back to the

time of Martin Luther, the organ has been the platform from which the song of the people was launched toward heaven.

With a congregational vote authorizing the purchase of the first phase of a new organ for Luther Memorial Church looming on the horizon, you might be asking why we need one.

Luther Memorial Church’s Pilcher pipe organ was installed in 1929 as the sanctuary was built, and, with the exception of a few renovations that came with the new (well,

new to LMC) console in the 1980’s, has remained virtually unchanged since then. The organ committee began its work long before I came to work at Luther Memorial. In the

summer of 2010, they retained Dan Schwandt, organist of Augustana Lutheran, Hyde Park, to do a thorough evaluation of the organ, and the following is an excerpt from his report.

Henry Pilcher’s Sons Opus 1319Shortly after Luther Memorial’s current church at the corner of Wilson and Campbell Avenues was

completed, Henry Pilcher’s Sons installed a three‐manual, twenty‐rank pipe organ. The cost of the organ was $11,900. According to church records, as early as 1956 a proposal for a new organ at Luther Memorial was solicited from the Wicks Organ Company of Highland, Illinois. Discussion of organ replacement or renovation contin-ued until when, in 1976, Chicago‐area organ technician James Gruber was contracted to perform a thorough clean-

ing and general repair of the organ, along with installing new lighting in the chambers, for a total cost of $2,000. By the early 1980’s, the original console from 1926 was beyond repair, and a second‐hand console was purchased from Mr. Scott Christiansen of Colorado Springs, Colorado at a cost of $200. In 1982, Gruber installed the refurbished console from Aus-

tin Organ Co.’s opus 1073 from 1923, originally installed at the University of Boulder, Colorado, for a cost of $1,800.

At some point, perhaps in either 1976 or 1982, slight alterations were made to the specification of the organ, with select ranks [or pipes] being moved or altered, and the swell shades removed from the front west

chamber. However, it is apparent that the majority of the pipework and mechanism original to Opus 1319 are in place and unaltered.

Current ConditionsThe bulk of the organ’s condition problems are due to a failing (or failed) mechanism. Numerous pipes have been pulled

out of their places to prevent them from sounding inadvertently (ciphering). . . . There are several dozen pipes lying around the chambers leaning in corners. This accounts for the extraordinary amount of dead notes encountered at the console. Pipes simply aren’t there, or at least the chest or console mechanisms have failed. Additionally, several dozen small . . . pipes and chest tubing near the walkways have been crushed as a result of negligent maintenance personnel.

Continued on page 6

Lyle Harlow [email protected]

Page 6: Dec/Jan 2011 VOICE

Numerous attempts at fundraising and discussions about the future of the organ are evidenced in the church files, but after the installation of the new console, it seems that no significant repair was carried out

on the organ despite major water damage, failing plaster, and inexpert maintenance. EvaluationThe overarching problem of the organ is mechanical. Simply put, the [mechani-

cal parts of the organ] have all reached the end of their useful lives. Couple this with the rav-ages of time and weather, and you have the current failed state of the organ.4

Typical of the organs of the period, Luther Memorial’s Pilcher was built with many large, mid-range pipes, giv-ing it a very homogeneous “symphonic” sound, at the expense of clarity and brilliance. Unfortunately, a large, round, homogeneous sound isn’t effective in a reverberant cathedral-like space such as LMC’s sanctuary. You

may have noticed that it’s hard to hear the melody sometimes during a big hymn—that’s because the or-gan does not have the higher range sounds (the 4’, 2’ and 1’ stops, in organ-speak) the cut through the din

of the mid-range sounds (the 8’ pipes, in organ-speak). You might say that its sound is “bottom heavy.”

Additionally, as previously mentioned in Dr. Schwandt’s report, large numbers of the notes on the keyboard don’t work at all. A parishioner recently made the comment on one of our yellow sheets that “it would be nice if the organ could be played more softly.” My response was “yes, it would.” But the problem is that not enough notes work to play much

of anything softly and the volume control mechanisms (the “swell shades”) have been removed. . The organ was built specifically for the organ chambers, high above the sanctuary on both sides of the altar. It’s stacked on top of itself in

multiple levels, and is virtually impossible to service or maintain. After nearly a century of service to the congregation, the leather that holds it together is dry and cracked, the electrical wiring that runs it is shorting out, and the connec-

tions that make the individual notes play are failing. There is no way to fix it, short of disassembling the entire thing and removing it, and restoring it as it is would not rectify the basic tonal and design flaws that have plagued it was new. Knowing that the current organ is not going to last much longer, the Organ Committee has come up with a multi-

phase plan for a wonderful new hybrid organ—so called because, when completed, it will have both real pipes (many of them restored and re-used from the current organ) and electronic “stops” or sounds. The new instrument will be

specifically designed to sound its best in the LMC sanctuary, and will provide enthusiastic support for congregational singing, without the cacophonous din that sometimes characterizes the current instrument. When completed, the

new organ will have more ranks of real pipes than the current one, a state-of-the-art console which should last 40-50 years, and a wonderful speaker system that can also be used to with the band in the Contemporary Service at 11:00.

Since I came to work at Luther Memorial Church in June, I’ve often remarked that I’ve never served a church with bet-ter singers than LMC. The voices and musical abilities in our congregation far surpass those of any congregation, of any denomination, that I’ve ever worked with. Having a first-class organ will not only contribute to the beauti-

ful singing of our current congregation, but will also help to attract the new worshipers to the community.

As Dr. Schwandt ends his report, “congregations have the opportunity to acquire an organ only every few generations, and by making the right decision for the current and future needs of the parish now,

countless people will benefit from those wise choices in the decades to come.” Our 1929 Pilcher was a gift to us from people who lived long ago. It has served the church well, but now it is time for us to consider

what gift we can give the next generations at LMC. Moving forward with Phase I of our new organ, and plan-ning for the completion of the additional phases is not only a gift to the ourselves, but a gift and a lega-

cy for the next hundred years of worshipers at Luther Memorial Church. I think they’ll thank us.

Why We Need a New Organ (con’t from page 5)

At some point in the last several years, water damage and subsequent plaster rot have made the physical problems in the organ chambers far worse. The expression shades in the west chamber (Great, Pedal, and Choir divisions) have

been removed, thereby eliminating the possibility of dynamic expression for those stops. The shades in the east chamber (Swell division) are only partially operable; meaning the organ functionally has no [volume control].

The console is typical of Austin Organ Company’s patented all‐electric design from the 1920’s. Be-ing even older than the organ itself, it has suffered the ravages of time in a similar fashion. Mechanical reli-

ability is a significant problem for the numerous moving parts in the console and control systems.

COUNCIL MINUTESLMC Council Minutes – November 15, 2011Council Members in attendance: Margaret Renas Marcia Mawe Jill Brown Smith Justin Kerstetter Lara Prestipino Dave Byerly Aaron Schoof Pr. Tim Brown Members Excused: Scott LorraineMeeting called to order at 7:03 with time for reflection and an opening prayer. Quorum acknowledged. Motion by Jill Brown Smith to approve the prior meeting minutes. Second by Dave Byerly. Approved by unanimous voice vote.

The council read Jonah 3:1-10 and held a discussion of the imperfect prophet and how God can work through imperfect people. We further discussed how the congregation could be courageous in implementation of new ideas. Examples included: Minor relief project, Potential capital campaign, Utilizing cash reserves, Hiring of additional ministry staffLetting go or changing tradition and established programsChanging the 10AM coffee hour to be more inclusive and welcoming (it was brought to the attention of Coun-cil Members that some of the congregation found it uncomfortable in the current format)Expanding building uses (the idea of a shelter was mentioned) Youth and Sunday school program expansion

Aaron Schoof provided a Treasurer’s ReportThis included a P&L through 10 months. For the month of October, the net ordinary loss was $3,395, but the church made a semi-annual benevolence payment of $5,000 during this month. Envelope giving was steady, but building use revenue was slightly lower in the month. Year to date (Jan-Oct), the church is operating at a break-even level. We discussed the possibility of increasing the level of the Council discretionary limit at the congregational meeting.

Marcia Mawe reported on HR updatesThere will be a nominating team formed to identify candidates for the three outgoing Council members (Justin, Polly and Margaret).Justin Kerstetter and Polly Reese will fill two of the three spots on the committee. Marcia will locate an individual for the third spot. The committee will meet for the first time after Thanksgiving. Marcia also presented to the Council a request made by Lyle Harlow (LMC Music Director) to convert the tower room adjacent to the balcony into office space for the church music staff. He had obtained one bid for $2,250. There is no room in the budget or Council dis-cretionary funds to complete such a project this year. Council generally agreed that the idea had merit, but that it should be presented as part of the 2012 budget in the congregational meeting. To include this project in the budget, at least one more bid was necessary. Marcia agreed to follow up with Lyle regarding an additional bid. There were no motions made on this item.

Lara Prestipino reported on new digital VOICE layout The design and layout were well received. There was some feedback about the ease of access, but this should be easily remedied with additional instructions accompanying the e-mail notice. A couple of members voiced concern about confidentiality issues due to the online format. Specifically, that the phone numbers of council members and congregation birthdays/anniversaries (month/date only, no year) were published. None of the Council members were bothered by their phone numbers being published. Motion by Dave Byerly to modify the format of birthdays/anniversaries so that there is no date included. 2nd by Justin Kerstetter. Passed, but not unanimously.

Pastor Tim reportedLMC was looking at a grant in conjunction with Irving Park Lutheran Church. It would have provid-ed funds to hire Brian Marsh to operate youth ministry at each church on a part time basis. The funding agency does not have money to provide this grant in 2011. It will be available again in 2012. LMC will need to allocate funds to pay Brian in 2012 if it wishes him to continue in his current position. The Council discussed a motion, but ultimately decided that it was unnecessary as the most appropriate means to a ccomplish this was to include a request as part of the 2012 budget and present it during the congregational meeting.

Page 9: Dec/Jan 2011 VOICE

The Voice Dec/Jan-9

The individual using the church for temporary shelter has requested some additional time as they have been unable to arrange for alternative housing. Pr. Tim noted that the arrangement is working well and there have been no issues. Motion by Marcia Mawe to allow the individual to remain under the current arrange-ment until 1/31. 2nd by Dave Byerly. Passed by unanimous vote.

A member had requested funds to purchase a license to show movies in the church. This was tabled for discussion at a later date due to lack of information.

Pr. Tim requested that the Council allow for discretionary funds to pay $100 bonuses for each of the 8 staff (not included himself ). The 2011 budget does not allow for such bonuses. Motion by Dave Byerly to allocate $800.00 from Council to provide a $100 Christmas gift for each staff mem-ber. The funds will be allocated from the Council discretionary limit. 2nd by Margaret Renas. Discussion of including in 2012 budget if the congregation felt this was important.

Concern that such a motion would place bonuses ahead of the previously approved replacement of the ejector pump, which was also relying on funds available under the Council discretionary limit. The motion passed, but not unanimously.

Jill Brown Smith provided a brief update on the new website. The new site is live. http://luthermemorialchicago.org/

Scott Lorraine provided a remote update on the status of the ejector pump. We are still awaiting a third bid. The next meeting will take place on 12/15.

The meeting adjourned with prayed.

The days are really flying by. I can’t believe we have arrived at the last month of the year for 2011. It has been a year of growth and change for our Women of the ELCA groups here at Luther Memo-rial Church. I am honored to be working with so many Bold Women. Our two hands on groups have made their presence known. The service group has been organizing the collection of per-sonal products for women who are coming out of prison, helped set up and clean up after the pre-Thanksgiving feast, sold Fair Trade coffee after services and at the Holiday Market, delivered winter coats for LSSI, and are making plans for supporting the ELCA Malaria Campaign. The quilters and knitters are working on some lap blankets for our shut-ins. The finished products will have been blessed at the 9 am service on Sunday, November 27th. If you know how to crochet and would like to join the group you would be welcome. Also anyone that wants to learn how to knit or quilt is welcome. See the contact information at the end of this article. The Women’s Spirituality Group and the Bible Study are both enjoying their time together and discussions of the reading mate-rial for each group. The Bible Study group is now meeting on the third Thursday of each month. Please join us on Saturday, December 10th for our Christmas party. All women are wel-come. We will meet in my home at 2722 W Leland Ave #2, beginning at 2 pm. Please bring an appetizer, dessert, wine, or another beverage of your choice to share. We will sing some Christmas carols and enjoy conversation and food with each other.Movie night is scheduled for Saturday, January 28, 2012. We will begin at 6 pm. This may be pot luck with the movie beginning at 7 pm. We are showing the award winning documen-tary, Pray the Devil Back to Hell. This tells the story of the war in Liberia and how Leymah Gbowee and a group of women helped to end the war that had been going on for 14 years. As you begin writing events in your 2012 calendar, don’t forget to include our fourth annual Women’s Spiritual Retreat Day which is scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2012. Registra-tion and theme details will be available soon. In the meantime, I encourage you to make your year end WELCA donations. Checks may be put in Frieda’s mailbox made out to WELCA.I wish all of you a wonderful Advent and Christmas season. May you be blessed with good health and the company of your church community, family and friends. Peace and Good Will,Linda Miranda, President Women of the ELCA at LMC
