I have just returned from the Governor-elect training in Indianapolis. The semi-nars were very informative and there will be many chal-lenges for Kiwanis in the upcoming years.

The one thing that the In-ternational Governor-elects and Kiwanis International had in common is a great dedica-tion to Kiwanis Clubs and a dynamic Kiwanis Team Spirit.

This was representative by intense Team Values which are Respect, Leadership, Collaboration, Pas-sion, Accountability and Communication.

We must remember that Kiwanis International is, essentially, an “association” of clubs around the world with the purpose of expanding and fostering the collective and individual success of member clubs. Which lead me to the Five Elements of Effec-tive Clubs:

• Relevant Service• FUN, Friendship & Focus on Strength• Notoriety/ Noted Presence• Development• Kiwanis FamilyI do not need to remunerate on these five ele-

ments of effective clubs as you are well aware of these. But, we do need to refocus on these basic elements.

If your actions inspire others to dream more you will be able to connect and advocate the Spirit of Ki-wanis.

I know that times are difficult but we must remem-ber that great leaders and great clubs arise in time of adversity. We must always focus on the Kiwanis Family and Kiwanis Foundation and our vision for our children and our community. Kiwanis is needed more than ever. Kiwanis is the right vehicle for Suc-cess. Our work will always continue as we strive to extend our reach to serve children around the world.

Fran and I want to wish you happy Holiday and prosperousness new year.

David BabbageGovernor-Elect

From the Executive Director“We are not makers of his-

tory. We are made by histo-ry”. Those are the words of Martin Luther King and hope-fully they will soften the dis-appointment I feel brought on by at least one recent major decision addressed by our own Kiwanis International Board. All of us are care-takers of the mission, ideas and successes the Found-ers of Kiwanis had when they brought to life our community

service volunteer organization back in 1915. Why then, without regard to tradition and history did this board choose to celebrate the milestone 100th anni-versary of the Birth of Kiwanis anywhere other than its’ birthplace in Detroit, Michigan…where our history began.

I have never before used my space in the Builder to criticize any aspect of Kiwanis but this seemingly simple action points out to me that Leadership is out of touch with Kiwanians at the local levels. That said, I would invite you to participate in an experiment at the District level of Kiwanis (something very few if any Districts have offered) by including a letters to the Leadership column in future issues of the Builder, beginning with the February/March edition. You will notice it is letters to Leadership, not the Editor, since your concerns and ideas should be addressed by more than one person. I have pointed out in prior issues that we generally do not see any significant communications up the chain and have encouraged more interaction with your Lt. Governors and club officers who are expected to convey issues as they arise. I am looking forward to your thoughtful com-ments and suggestions so that we can more actively direct our questions and concerns to our International body, supported by detailed compilation of your sub-missions. As volunteers we all give our time and pas-sion to serve the children of the world…what do we want back for those efforts?

Your letters to leadership can address any issue, but I will always suggest one question each time and for the next issue it is: What benefits do you expect Kiwanis International and/or the Michigan District to provide you for your membership?

Keep up the great work. Our communities need us.

During two beautiful Autumn weekends in October, several of our outstanding certified trainers and service leadership experts provided over 150 Michigan Kiwaniians with a lot of information to take back to their clubs. Did YOU miss it?

Sessions were held on Strategic Planning, Service Leadership op-portunities, Social Media and Fund Raising ideas. If you had a mem-ber or two from your club who attended the training, be sure to give them time at one of your meetings to report back on all the valuable information they gathered!

We want to thank our trainers for all the time they spend in prepa-ration, travel and presenting their information. Each one of these special Kiwanis members are people who go above and beyond in their volunteer efforts. Be sure to thank them when you see them from time to time. Being a trainer really does take a lot of dedication. Our trainers at Fall Leadership Education were: Strategic Planning – Mark Ott and Alan Dailey; Social Media – Preston Abadie; Service Leadership – Greg Smith, Brian Crenshaw, Winnie Brys and special thanks to District Key Club Governor, Deanna Galer who did a tremendous job; Fund Raising – Richard Hitch & Cindy Morgan with Linda Lawther.

Start making plans now to attend the Club Excellence train-ing on February 11 in Novi or the 18th in Mt. Pleasant. It will be here before you know it. Registraton Form on Page 15.

Kiwanisone.org - This is one option you don’t have to miss because of your schedule, the weather, an illness or for any other reason. If you can just get to the first page – the home page at www.kiwanisone.org and type what you are looking for in the search bar at the top of the page – you are likely to see several options. Anything that is in blue text is likely to be a “link” to another area or a document. Click on the blue and explore! If you get lost – or feel lost just start over at www.kiwanisone.org and search again. Spend some time playing on the website and you will become more familiar with what is available to you. In future articles in The Builder – The Michigan district Newsletter I will share information on some of the webinars that are available at www.kiwanisone.org. If you have any favorites that you would like to suggest for others, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I wish you all a wonderful season of cold air, snow, sunshine, holi-days and family.

6 Michigan Builder I December/January 2012

Over the past 5 years the Michigan District has experienced a steady growth and interest in all the Service Leadership programs. Here are the growth numbers:

Program Clubs MembersBuilders Club +17 +400Key Club +12 +500Circle K + 8 +254Aktion Club +19 +569

Also during this time, K-Kids programs have flourished while Key Leader has been launched and well-attended each year.

In the same time frame the Kiwanis clubs in Michigan have lost 23 clubs and 1500 mem-bers. This is a concern because Service Leadership programs need Kiwanis in order to thrive and prosper. We need their guidance, mentorship, monetary support and leadership direction. If Kiwanis shrinks, eventually all the Service Leadership programs will shrink as well.

It’s time Kiwanis clubs took a look at Service Leadership clubs as more than just fulfill-ing the Kiwanis mission or something to check off the list of yearly club activities. It’s time to explore ways a Service Leadership program can benefit your club by helping it grow, become re-energized and open to new activities.

Each of you will approach this in a different way and many clubs are already benefitting from sponsoring these programs. Here are some of the benefits your club can realize from working in the Service Leadership area:

• Get more help for your existing service projects and new service projects• Increase visibility in the community• More opportunities for publicity• Make more connections in the community (Market your club)• Engage your membership• Mentor Youth. The teacher can learn along with the student• Help more Kiwanians become leaders by developing student leaders• Enhance the Kiwanis member experience-Get younger members• Add members to the club through school and parents• Build future Kiwanis members• Bring more energy and fun to your club• Help become a distinguished club• Internal satisfaction. It feels good to help others beyond writing a check• Fulfill the Kiwanis mission

There are many other benefits you can add to this list for your particular club. All of the Service Leadership administrators are ready and available to answer any questions, be a program speaker at one of your club or Division meetings or help you get a club started. All of our contact information is in the current Kiwanis District Directory.

We cannot continue to ignore trends and hope something will change. It’s time to take ac-tion and use what we have so we make it work for us. Kiwanis and Service Leadership: a great team that will help each other resulting in a revitalized and growing Michigan Kiwanis Family.

State Representative Phil Potvin pre-sented the club with a House Resolution, signed by Gov. Snyder, congratulating the club for this outstanding achieve-ment.

The club honored two members at its’ Seventy Fifth event with life time mem-bership awards.

JacksonThe Kiwanis Club of Jackson packed and presented Dictionaries to each Jackson Public, Vandercook Lake and Springport school districts. A total of 692 dictionaries for 3rd graders and 562 thesauruses for 7th graders will be distributed. Members were also provided with letters to give to school administrators explaining that the Dictionary Project is a national movement to promote the wonder of reading and writing. Kiwanis believes reading and writing skills help ensure a successful ed-ucation and ultimately, students become productive members in the community.

At the same time, vouchers were distrib-uted to the schools for our Shoes & Boots Program. This is a program where at-risk children within the Jackson Public School system receive a voucher to Kohl’s to purchase a free pair of shoes or boots. Kiwanis pays for the shoes and boots at a discounted rate by Kohl’s. Each year, Kiwanis Club of Jackson budgets approximately $10,000 for this signature program.

Jackson On September 16, 2011, the Kiwanis Club of Jackson, city officials and the Jackson community gathered at Kiwanis Park for a re-dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. A partnership between Kiwanis Foundation and the City of Jackson established a budget of $148,000 to renovate the Park.

“Kiwanis Park” enjoys a long history, over 60 years, and we want to make sure we leave a legacy to the community. Our members are so proud to have invested not only the financial resources, but sweat equity by paint-ing the storage building that houses the bathrooms and storage room, and planting flowers and shrubs. Serving the children of our community will always be the No. 1 priority of Kiwanis, and it is our hope that the com-munity will use the park often,” DaPra said.

St. JohnsOver 75 high school and middle-school students gath-ered recently to perform public service in the form of rak-ing leaves. They were part of Kiwanis sponsored clubs designed to spark community service and participation awareness in young people. The two clubs – The Builders Club and The Good Wins Key Club – are supported by the Kiwanis Club of St. Johns 707 and coordinated through St. Johns Public Schools.

A number of St. Johns residents received a Sunday sur-prise recently when a group of Kiwanis sponsored stu-dents descended on sections of the city to graciously rake leaves. The activity, which has become a regular autumn event, is but one of several public service projects under-taken throughout the year by two groups of students.

Mt. MorrisThe Kiwanis Club of Mt. Morris is proud to announce a new project that kicked off in October. The Kiwanis Club and Mt. Morris SKIP Director Tammy Wade have partnered to bring the “Back Pack Program” to the Mt. Morris Consolidated Schools.

This year, the Mt.Morris Club was able to secure funds for 60 back packs. As of right now, 48 back packs have been assigned to a student and there is a waiting list for more back packs. In Picture (L to R), Lisa Kern, Ariel (Daughter of Waneita), Waneita Bovan, Tammy Wade

Welcome Kiwanians, to our new administrative year. As your YCPO Chair-person for this year I would like to fill you in on our goals for the coming year.

First and foremost, we will still be supporting our Foundations’ 4 childrens’ hospitals. This can be done with handmade dolls, shower events for giv-ing, living, play and educational items for the kids. Governor Liz Wilson and I have planned a District wide club project for this year. Past International President Sylvester Neal has asked The Michigan District to chair his pro-gram of “Dolls for Africa”. We have Kiwanis Clubs in Nairobi and Kenya. In Nairobi alone, there is a need for dolls in 50 schools and 50 orphanages as well as hospitals. We have received communications from their District Director that the need is desperate for these dolls. Most of these children have nothing at all and a gift of one of our dolls would be a blessing. We are anticipating a request and suggested number from Kenya also.

This is where The Michigan District can help. We are coordinating getting the dolls from any and all clubs that wish to help. My goal is to make 3000 dolls and I know we can do it. I realize that not all of our clubs can or will participate, but we need as many clubs as possible to help.

This is an easy club project and good to work on this winter. Sylvester Neal has requested the dolls be made in cheerful fabrics. This is an easy way to use up scraps of materials left over from other projects.

If you know church groups or senior citizen groups that would like to help this would be good resource for you and could be worked into the community service for your club. As a club, you may have to provide polyester stuffing to any outside group that may help. The stuffing is available at K-Mart, Wal-Mart, JoAnn’s, Michael’s and any other craft or fabric store.

I would like to start collecting the dolls at the Spring Divisionals. However if you get them done earlier, let me know and Denny and I will arrange to pick them up. I think it would be great to have piles of dolls at each of our Spring Divisionals.

I have the patterns for the dolls. There is a brochure that Kiwanis Interna-tional has prepared. If you need one please contact me. If you wish to put the labels on the dolls, Beverly Surratt of the Addison Kiwanis Club has beautiful labels which say Michigan Kiwanis on them. This is a project for the Addison Kiwanis Club; they would appreciate your business. Your cost for the labels from Beverly would be $8.00/100.

I know we can count on The Michigan District to make this a successful dis-trict wide club project. Any questions please contact me at [email protected] or phone: 1-989-366-4936 or cell: 1-313-218-5067. Pat Kiroff, District Chair.

Spring Divisionals are quickly coming up. These events give us an opportunity to showcase our most passionate or the hardest working Kiwanians in our local clubs. Now is that time to be thinking of honoring a fellow member of your club with appropriate awards fitting the work and passion that they have done for the community and the club, while representing The Objects of Kiwanis International and the Michigan District of Kiwanis.

We thank these individuals countless times verbally, but rarely with a lasting memento of an award to show our appreciation. Take this opportunity to give them that moment to shine, and at the same time pro-vide even more support to the hospitalized children that we serve. The Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation has awards ranging from $250.00 to $1000.00. Contact your Foundation trustee who is listed in the District Di-rectory or go to the Foundation website at www.kimif.org . You can also email the executive Director Denny Kiroff at [email protected] and or call him at 1-989-366-4936 for any further information.

Your gift of an award can be presented by a Foundation Trustee at your Kiwanis club or even at Spring Divisional. The recipient will be truly happy to be publicly recognized.

12 Michigan Builder I December/January 2012

W hat a great impact the Michigan District is having on this worldwide Kiwanis International project, The Eliminate Project! Many clubs and individuals have expressed interest with their contributions and club projects in helping the Michigan District to be a major contributor to our worldwide goal of $110 million. I would like to say THANK YOU for the many individu-als and clubs who have made their commitments and contributions to this major International project.

This disease, maternal, neonatal tetanus (MNT) will never be eradicated in the less than 40 countries to which Kiwanis has dedicated itself. We can eliminate this disease with a series of three immunizations which can protect women and their future babies. This disease cannot be eradicated because it is in the soil throughout the world, but major elimination is achieved when there is less than one in 1,000 cases of maternal and neonatal tetanus in every district of a country.

The following are responses to frequently asked ques-tions.

1. WHY IS COMBATING MNT SO IMPORTANT NOW? Every day in the developing world, 22,000 children die of preventable causes—before reaching their fifth birthday. Kiwanis In-ternational is eliminating a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. By targeting the poorest, most underserved women and children on earth, The Eliminate Project will pave the way for other interventions that will boost maternal health and child survival.

2. WHAT ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY? A woman who receives the three-series tetanus vaccine is protected against tetanus for the majority of her childbearing years. When a baby is born to an immunized mother, she passes her protection along to her child. The baby will require booster shots to remain protected. A portion of the funds raised by the Kiwanis family will be devoted to ongoing education and sustainability efforts. Dis

I will provide you with these frequently asked questions in future articles and you may find them on the KiwanisOne website under the Eliminate Project.

We now have three Multi-Division Coordinators for our 18 divisions in the Michigan district, and each

coordinator has been assigned and will work with six divisions and their division coordinators. These dedicated

Kiwanians are:

1. Ms. Jeanette Harris from the Detroit #1 club

2. Joseph Scheuring from the Dexter club

3. David Garland from the Charlevoix club

As I travel and talk to many clubs in the district I find much enthu-siasm among our members regarding this International project. Kiwanis has a history of achievement with the IDD program. IDD was Kiwanis’ first global campaign raising awareness for iodine deficiency disorders, the leading preventable cause of mental disability. It raised over $100 million for salt iodization, testing, monitoring and community outreach and education in developing nations. These funds are now at work in more than 103 nations and about 80 million children in the developing world will be born free of IDD this year. This project has been one of the greatest public health triumphs of the century. We now have another opportunity with The Eliminate Project and we will achieve our goal of $110 million and protect these mothers and their babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus.
