Check this off Our Bucket List By Judy & Mike Holman Everyone makes them. It’s called the “list”. Things we need to do, people we want to see, and places to go. Mike and I had the opportunity to visit a place - the Barrett - Jackson Auto Auction in Las Vegas. We’ve been talking about it for several years and decided to make plans and go for it. We booked the ho-tel room and airline flights in July. Once the information became available on the Barrett - Jackson web site we discussed the packages offered. We decided to apply to be a bidder, just in case we found a car we had to have. This also gave us access to all the cars, the staging area, and the auction block. Also, know-ing that food prices can be high, we purchased tickets to the Muscle Lounge. We had all our meals and

drinks taken care of for the 3 days of the auction. Now we just waited until October. Our flight left out of Atlanta at 8:45pm on Wednesday with a direct route to Las Vegas. Once there, we grabbed a cab and headed to the hotel. We

stayed at the Mandalay Bay. Our room over-looked the Vegas Strip. The Mandalay Bay Ho-tel is were the auction was taking place. Every-thing was in walking distance - our room, the ca-sino, Barrett-Jackson, and a great coffee shop. We got settled in and then strolled through the hotel. We found the convention center and where we would need to go in the morning. Played a couple of slot machines, grabbed a cup of coffee, and just took in all the surroundings of the hotel. We should have been tired. Traveling all day. It was 2:00am at home but only 11:00pm here. Wednesday morning we were up and going by 7:30am. Went through security and entered the world of a Barrett-Jackson Auto

Auction. CARS everywhere! All makes, models, years. You name it, it was here. We took the first couple of hours before the auction to walk the show area and look at the cars. I fell in love with several. Now keep

in mind that before I met Mike all makes and models were interesting to me. So with that said my eye caught a beautiful blue ’70 Chevelle 4 speed with a 454 under the hood, then a ‘66 Fiat Abarth 4 speed with a “big” 700cc engine, a “70 Nova SS Custom with a 396, and finally a ‘69 Olds Cutlass Hurst, auto trans, with a 455 under the hood. As we turned the corner to the next row, there they were, Mike Brewer and Ant Astead from Wheeler Dealers. They had their ‘65 Austin-Healey there that

was going to be in an upcoming episode. The Mopars were there and holding their own with the Fords and Chevys. Roadrunners, Challeng-ers, Cudas, Imperials, Vipers, Furys, DeSotos, Superbirds, and several older Dodge and Plymouth pick-up trucks. Mike found a ‘67 Dart GT convertible he kept going back to look at. A slant 6 under the hood with factory bucket seats. A nice clean car. OK, I thought. Is this a car we

were going to add to the collection? Our first A Body car?

MOPAR MUSCLE Page 7

Official newsletter of the East Tennessee Mopars Car Club.

The auction began at 11:00am and boy did the cars move. So many cars actually went for a reasonable price. You can definitely get the auction fever if you’re not careful. Barrett-Jackson is noted for auctioning off cars for charity. This weekend was no dif-

ferent. The first was a 2017 Chevy Crew Cab Pick Up with a custom paint job by Count’s Kustoms. In-cluded with the truck was a custom motorcycle. It sold for $100,000. All the guys were there - Danny “the Count”, Bryan, Horny Mike, and several of the mechanics. I got the opportunity to meet Horny Mike. Too cool. On our way to the Muscle lounge for supper I got the opportunity to meet another car nut - Chris Jacobs from Over Haulin’. What a great

day. Friday started just like Thursday. Bright and early and ready for more cars. We checked out the automo-bilia that was up for auction. One Mopar item was on the auction block - a Mopar sign. Very nice and went for over $900. Several of the older Dodge and Plymouth pick up trucks Mike and I were looking at crossed the bidders block in the afternoon. A 1938 Dodge, 218ci, with a 3sp and a 1940 Plymouth 6 cylin-der with a 3sp. The one that really caught our attention was the Plymouth. We discussed our budget to include transporting the truck back to Tennessee. The bidding was reasonable just not for us. We spent the rest of the day enjoying the auction, meeting some great people in the Muscle lounge, and of course looking at more cars. Saturday, the last day of the auction was just like the other days. Up early and going all day. You just can’t get enough. I stopped by the Dodge exhibit when Mike was looking at other cars. They had Challenger Thrill Rides avail-able if you filled out a new car survey. No problem. I wanted to do something for Mike. After completing the survey and getting my ride ticket I gave it to Mike and told him go have some fun. And boy did he! His ride along was in a 2017 Hellcat. He told the driver not to hold any-thing back. Drifting and cutting donuts!!!!!! When Mike was done and met me at the gate, I told him go again that the ticket was good for 2 rides. His smile was priceless. The auction was coming to an end and the crowd was thinning out. The last of the cars were in the staging area. Mike and I went down on the auction floor and sat in the first rows. I was hoping to get a picture of Craig Jackson. After the auction, I told Mike to go on the auction block for a picture. At the same time Craig Jackson comes out from around the podium. We asked if he would take a picture with Mike. He

smiled and put his arm around Mike and told Mike he’s just another car guy. A

great ending to a great event. Our flight didn’t leave until 11:45pm on Sunday, so it was a day to be spent as a

tourist Continued on page 8

MOPAR MUSCLE Page 8

Official newsletter of the East Tennessee Mopars Car Club.

Our first stop was Count’s Kustoms. The museum held about 1/4 of the Count’s personal cars. From the 1972 Dodge Charger to his custom gold Cadillac to the

golf cart the guys restored for him. On one wall were all the helmets Horny Mike wears on the program. After leaving Count’s Kus-toms we called for an Uber and went to the Carroll Shelby Museum. This museum has every model of car that has the Carroll Shelby name on it. The museum has a shop that will convert a car to a Shelby. Talking with our driver about cars and the museum he stayed and walked the museum

with us. Another car nut.

Our last stop was the Las Vegas sign. After the horrible shooting that took 58 lives a memorial was set up in the

median. We stopped to pay our respects. We ended our trip on a solemn note. Took the red eye flight back to Atlanta and drove back to Knoxville. We are now looking at other places on our list

to visit.
