Pop-up books are one of life’s early thrills as a child — a

mechanical world of paper that ignites the imagina-tion. Books, especially the ones with pictures and the stories they told, were one thing, but a book that could actually spring to life before your eyes? The Brandywine River Museum’s upcoming exhibit, “Pop-Up! Illustra-tions in 3-D” showcases various examples of these explosive, eye-catching books.

Pop-up artwork has a history that reaches back to the 13th century. The idea began with more heavy sub-jects; the serious scientific and religious texts of the day were designed with hid-den gears that would shift and fold and fold again as the page was turned.

Though the viewers would not see the underly-ing paper-machinery that caused the motions, they would be treated to pages in motion before their eyes. It wasn’t until the mid to late 19th century, however, that

pop-up books as we have come to know them came into existence.

“Literacy, greater wealth and a modern sense of childhood spread after the Industrial Revolution,” explains Christine Podmaniczky, Brandywine’s associate curator, in an accompany-ing essay, “Pop-Up!”

“Inspired by innovative pop-up books constructed in Czechoslova-kia, American Waldo Hunt began to pro-duce similar designs in the 1960s,” con-tinues Podmaniczky. “His books sparked a renewed interest in pop-ups that has continued to the present day.”

The books featured in the “Pop-Up!” exhibit snap, crackle and pop. They pull from a stew of sources that includes the old English nursery rhyme “Jack Be Nimble,” wildlife such as lions and leopards that

crawl and slink to life as the page unfolds, and the early 18th century French fairy tale “Puss in Boots.”

Some of the pieces in the exhibit are older, such as turn-of-the-century Ameri-can publications and others from the 1930s through the

’60s, each decade embodied via top-notch paper crafts-manship. A few have even been designed to stand, with each page displayed out-ward, forming a castle-like structure with 3-D images from the story acting as its walls.

There are different kinds of pop-up books: pop-outs, pull-downs, pull-tabs and more. Generally speaking, the term “movable book” applies to all of them. When the author has completed his

story and has an idea of how he would like the illustra-tions to run, he then collabo-rates with a paper engineer to design and employ the intricate, tiny mechanisms that fold and twist in time, a sort of origami dance the pages do with one another that other books may lack.

Contemporary engineers showcased in the exhibit include David Carter, Chuck Fischer, Bruce Foster, Mat-thew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda.

“The genre has attracted such artists/illustrators as Edward Gorey, Maurice Sendak and Tomei de-Paola,” says Podmaniczky, who are notable for “The Gashlycrumb Tinies,” “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Strega Nora,” respectively. Movable artwork featured by all of these artists and many more will be on display during the exhibit, and the museum invites booklovers young

and old alike to take part in enjoying these illustrated treasures.

“Viewers will marvel at the scope of subject matter and the complex sophistica-tion of modern pop-ups,” says Podmaniczky. The exhibit will be on display beginning Nov. 23 and will run through Jan. 6. Admis-sion is $12, senior citizens are $8 and students are $6, as are children 6 and under. The exhibit is part of a “Brandywine Christmas,” an event during which the museum celebrates the holi-days with glittering decora-tions and an O-gauge model railroad.

The exhibit pulls the bulk of its exhibit from the collection of Ann Staples, a renowned collector and authority of pop-up books. Staples is also the founder of the Movable Book Society, a 400-member group dedicated to promot-ing these peerless paper creations and the folks who mastermind them.

Visits to the Philadel-phia Zoo by children from 2 to 13 will be

enhanced by a special 2.3-acre area devoted to their learning starting in April of next year.

Located in the former pachyderm house designed in 1945 by legendary French-American architect Paul Cret, the Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo & Education Center is being modernized and made into the setting of an environ-mental lesson for its young guests. The change will offer a combination of adap-tive reuse of the building’s appearance and Leadership in Energy and Environmen-tal Design certification.

Environmental issues will be an important lesson, as architect David Ade of SMP Architects, which designed the renovations to the build-ing, and Nina Bisbee, vice president of planning at the zoo, said last month, the Children’s Zoo will teach the children about issues such as the importance of water conservation, recy-cling and other environmen-tal necessities.

Ade and Bisbee were speaking at an annual Phila-delphia chapter of Ameri-can Institute of Architects seminar called Design on the Delaware that presents architectural developments and ideas each year.

The children’s zoo build-ing will be LEED-certified and include a number of “green” features — green

roofs, rainwater harvesting cisterns and geothermal heating and cooling.

Inside, the building probably will not resemble the place where elephants were housed, aszoo officials decided that the small space did not offer humane condi-tions. It was completed rebuilt on the inside, leaving the exterior to continue resembling a European farm building. Among the renovations, the floor was replaced with new concrete, windows were changed and storm drains were installed.

The geothermal envelope of the building and the inte-rior are new and are suited to the smaller animals that will inhabit the space. In addition, about one-third the size of the 17,000-square-foot building will be added.

Four entrance/exits were added to the space as well as a rest room building and a storage building. Skylights that were appropriate for elephants had to be modi-fied for the new animals.

The renovated elephant house inhabitants will include small, rare animals and domestic ones of all varieties. There will be tiny goats that climb walls and chickens that do what chick-ens do, but most important-ly, the area will be available for children to see and learn. It will be available on a year-round basis and not be weather-dependent.

The zoo’s current chil-dren’s zoo animals — goats, sheep, ducks and backyard bugs — will be joined by colorful butterflies, bud-gies and tropical fish, all

connecting to a conservation message. The animals will include rare breed goats, sheep and chickens.

As a new addition to the program, children will be engaged in animal care: grooming, feeding and learning how to improve animals’ lives.

“Importantly, the children will also get to see small and young animals that will be more accessible than the large animals in the other areas of the zoo,” Bisbee said.

The main building of the Children’s Zoo is located on the main thoroughfare of the zoo near the exit, so it will be easy to find.

Every detail that will allow the children to learn about environmental concerns was considered,

including water bottles.“We have installed foun-

tains where visitors can fill up their water bottles rather than using plastic bottles of water that have to be disposed of,” Ade said.

No more will small chil-dren have to be led through the zoo looking for animals that are awake and easy for them to see. The zoo is proud of being designed to offer animals a life as close as possible to their native habitat, a habitat where the animals are not necessarily on display all the time.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a great cultural re-source. For practi-cal purposes, it is a multiple aesthetic

showcase, simultaneously featur-ing specialized exhibitions and permanent holdings from many different parts of the world and assorted areas of the visual arts.

When you walk through the entry doors of either the landmark

structure on Fairmount or the Perelman Building, across the Parkway at 26th Street, you set foot into the equivalent of several distinctive art museums rolled into one. This makes it possible to enjoy a wide variety of exception-al sights during a single visit.

For example, at this time, you can examine a fascinating solo show of unique clothing concepts and an interesting duo-installation of creative graphic designs and

illustration. A good title for these several simultaneous offerings might be “One Plus One Equals Three.”

The exhibition of exceptional fashion ideas and costuming for the stage presents selections by the Dutch-American couturier Ronaldus Shamask. It was orga-nized by Dilys Blum of the mu-seum staff and is due to remain on view in the Perelman Building through March 10, 2013.

The two graphics exhibi-tions, put together by Katherine Bloom Hiesinger, the museum’s curator of design, are also in-stalled in the Perelman Building. They will close to the public on April 14, 2013.

Shamask, who was born in Amsterdam, has a flare for mak-ing the most of unusual fabric silhouettes. His combination “Evening Jacket and Skirt” of 1998 has been updated into a new 2012 version. Consisting of a top in black cotton pique and

black rubber tulle over a white buckram and peach synthetic lamé bottom, the total garment is an exceptionally striking sight to behold.

His “Hakama Evening Coverall” of 1979 has also been reworked into a 2012 version. It features an outer layer in black and red silk taffeta counterpointed by a top-to-toe, full-length yellow bow tie, running down the front. The overall concept vibrates with youthful daring and an audacious spirit of playful well-being.

Shamask’s clothes would not have been right for a gilded age. Instead, they feel appropriate for use in

the modern period. In their own special way, they display a spirit of cool resaerve. This is also true of the theatrical costumes by Shamask that are included in the show.

Lively three-dimen-sional forms, his designs are bright examples of artistic minimalism. With an abbreviated touch of grace, they project an incisive presence, one partial to figures on the slender side rather than stout.

In the field of contemporary graphic design and illustration, one encounters two categories of performer. The first is made up of a few exceptionally creative visionaries. The second consists of many

reasonably competent individu-als who are otherwise uninspired hacks.

To show examples of the level achieved by the former group, the art museum is exhibiting superior examples by two widely admired individuals — Paula Scher and Seymour Chwast.

However, before discuss-ing their accomplishments, it may be helpful to explain that contemporary graphic design-ers and illustrators are the artists who generate ideas for all sorts of silent visual communication forms. They include typographi-cal copy and pictorial subject matter for the sake of attracting attention and promoting sales and also for implementing all manner of information programs. In ev-eryday practice, this means they are responsible for potentially reaching mass audiences with

everything from highway safety signs to pages and pages of printed matter.

Paula Scher has earned many prizes for her novel ap-proach to record album cov-ers, theatrical posters and an assortment of other products in print from such mercantile and cultural organizations as Coca-Cola, Citigroup and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Seymour

Chwast was one of the founders of the well-regarded, business-ori-ented art service called Pushpin Studios. In that role, he introduced a distinctive contem-porary approach to the practice of commercial illustration. Throughout

a long-standing career in publish-ing and promotion, he has served such firms as Mobil Oil, Sony, Forbes and Columbia Records.

His outlook on his work has been expressed succinctly in the statement, “The client’s message must be presented in the clear-est and most accessible manner possible.”

Both Chwast and Scher (who are married to each other) feel their work in graphic form is a significant approach to serious personal art expression. Their re-ceipt of many sincerely respected awards from various organized bodies in their field suggests their view is also supported by many of their professional associates.

A social and political activist, as well as a noted California artist, Emmy Lou Packard was born in 1914 in California's Imperial Valley, not far from the Mexican border. When she was 14, living with her family in Mexico City, her mother took her to meet Diego Rivera, who was working on his Secretariat of Education frescoes. Diego encouraged her art work and became a mentor and friend. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1936, a natural sciences major.

While at UC, she was editor of both the daily paper and literary magazine, as well as the first woman editor of the Pelican, the humor magazine. During her junior year, she married Burton Cairns, an architect, and they had a son, Donald. Burton died in a car crash in 1939. In 1940, Emmy Lou studied sculpture and fresco at the California School of Fine Arts. and became Rivera's chief assistant on the Pan-American Unity mural that he painted for the World's Fair at Treasure Island. The mural is now in the lobby of the San Francisco City College Theatre.

Join in the fun. Admission is FREE! This is a regular meeting of the North Penn Art Alliance. Come and see what the NPAA contributes to our community.
