Flu, etc. As we all know, the flu virus and other nasty critters have been making the rounds, infecting people and making miserable, as they are wont to do. Keep in mind: · If you are ill, there is no obligation to attend Mass. Choosing not to expose others to illness is an act of charity, not a sin. · If you suspect that you are ill, consider not receiv-ing the Precious Blood at Communion. · If you suspect that you are ill, a nod or a bow may be better than a handshake, including at the Sign of Peace · Frequent and thorough hand-washing is one of the most effective means of preventing the spread of dis-ease. Wash your hands early and often! TIME Do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of. —Benjamin Franklin

Liturgical Roles for January

From the Pastor’s Desk

2017 — A year of fires and earthquakes and hurricanes and floods, as well as way, way too much sense-less and unnecessary violence, in our homes and our streets and on battlefields. Along the way, there were also gifts and blessings, successes and accomplishments, and many, many moments of grace when we experienced God’s love, often through another person. Truthfully, there isn’t much reason to think that 2018 will be very dif-ferent. So many of the life-altering events that come our way are far beyond our control. If we are honest, we’ll admit that many of the things that affected our lives in the past year, good and bad, were not of our making.

Looking back on the past year may leave us feeling somewhat helpless. But we are not. There is some-thing that we can change that can make all the difference in the world. It’s about changing our hearts, our atti-tudes, our reactions, our perspectives. No matter what events happen to clutter our paths this coming year, how we perceive and respond to these things can literally change everything. But the change must happen within.

Many will be making well-intentioned resolutions as we begin a new year. Here are some suggestions that aim to help us live in the truth about ourselves, and in the truth about God’s grace.

Shattering the Delusions

Resolve to begin each day with a prayer for God's guidance, even as brief as "God, help me. “ Shatter the delusion that you can manage the day alone.

Resolve to end the day with at least one small prayer of thanksgiving for some moment of grace. Shatter the delusion that goodness is realized without God's help.

Resolve each day to perform some small act of mercy for someone who may not deserve your kindness. Shatter the delusion that you deserve the blessings that fill your life.

Resolve each day to offer forgiveness to someone who has harmed you in some way. Shatter the delusion that you yourself have no need of forgiveness.

Resolve each day to appreciate someone who looks or acts or speaks differently from you. Shatter the delusion that you are more or better than they.

Resolve each day to practice some small act of self-denial. Shatter the delusion that you do not have enough.
