In his sweeping depiction of kingdom citizenship, Jesus utters some of the most familiar passages in all of Scripture. We will navigate the Sermon on the Mount as it was originally heard: as one cohesive, well-ordered message, intended to challenge us to think differently about repentance, salvation, and sanctification. For 9 weeks we will seat ourselves on a mountainside (figuratively) to learn at the feet of Jesus.

Written by Hans Froese

This is a brief account of my becoming a professional shopping-mall Santa, and the various experiences encountered while doing that. This is not about an exposé, or taking issues with things like: the exploitation of elves, nor about the need for gender equality for Santas, and not even about lamenting the increasing commercialization of Christmas.Instead I want to focus on the many mostly positive incidents and situations that occur at Santa’s shopping-mall palace. In many ways the mall is a microcosm of society. All the crowds of shoppers are invited to visit Santa without any charge, although there is a cost for photos. Daily I saw the hopes, the love and the fears of our youngsters up close. Then it may be interesting to compare the whole Santa-inspired view of the Christmas season, with some similar and parallel views of the original historic Christmas.Santa’s mall palace, being so far from the North Pole encompasses a bit of mystery. One boy asked me what I was doing in Winnipeg. I said that I came here to warm up from the cold up there. Children are curious, some are shy, some are afraid and some are trusting. Often children love Santa at a distance but fear him when up close. When parents plopped their child on Santa’s lap and quickly backed off for the photos, the child felt abandoned, and much crying resulted. Many babies came for their first Christmas photo and usually did quite well. All the children claimed to strive to be on the good list, and not on the naughty list. Having twin boys or beautiful little girls on Santa’s knees, can help to make being always jolly a lot easier at times. Sometimes parents were unrealistic in their shrill shouts and efforts to make the child smile for the camera. This did not usually succeed. Many children came dressed up fancy for their visit with the Big Red Guy. It built rapport to admire their outfits. Generally the children were well behaved but some were unrestrained. Sometimes classes of nursery school or kindergarten children came for a group photo.Surprisingly, a considerable number of adults also came to visit Santa (when selfies won’t do). Sometimes young couples who are dating or in a relationship, will come for a first photo momento. Often groups of sisters, or friends, or even office colleagues will have a photo taken with Santa. lt also seemed that caregivers or companions of adult disabled persons often roamed the shopping-mall to pass the time. They then often brought their charges to see Santa. This was often a good experience for Santa to welcome and take time for those who are vulnerable and often marginalized. Several grandmas have also sat on my knee (often encouraged by a grown-up daughter). One had the request for peace on Earth, another only wanted a candy cane. I personally have not “officiated” at the weekly “Pets With Santa” events, but it was apparently very popular. I did have a very tough guy come for a photo for his girlfriend. He was covered from head to foot with many tattoos. Later, my elves told me that when this guy went to pay, he peeled off seven cash $100 bills, before finding a smaller bill to pay with. Someone suggested that maybe he could have been on the naughty list after all. When l read the accounts of that first original Christmas, there seem to be many parallels to the Santa experience. There was also an element of mystery to the coming of the nativity from a far away place). Of course there was some advance notice or prophecy. The lowly and marginalized shepherds of Bethlehem were welcomed, as were the more well-to-do Magi (or Wisemen), who brought extravagant gifts. When that babe of the manger became an adult, he continued to welcome the sick, the down and-out, and the outcasts (even lepers). And he also especially gave orders to “Let the little children come unto me”, just like the Big Red Guy who welcomes little children onto his lap. There is also always welcome and invitation for any adult who may chose to come (and without charge).Santa tried to spread some joy, (Ho-Ho-Ho?) and peace and Merry Christmas to all. The Prince of Peace similarly offers the frenzied world: joy, peace, good-will and eternal life to all. Our imperfect and disheveled world is greatly in need of this. That is why I like Christmas.

Dear friends and ministry partners,Your prayers have helped us through Najat’s surgery and chemo infusions. Praise God! Even as Najat has struggled with severe side effects these past months of treatments, we have both experienced deep peace, joy and great expectancy of blessing to come! Thank you!As we have met with many physicians and medical people, we have given glory to God and let them know that we are not scared of the outcome. Jesus gives us hope. So although these past months have been very difficult, we are persevering and seeing God at work, giving us strength for each new day and giving us opportunity to share the hope we have in Christ. Now Najat is facing three weeks of daily radiation beginning December 2sd to help insure the cancer will not return. As God brings us to your mind, we would treasure your continued prayers.I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership… on this journey. Philippians 1:3-5Blessings in Christ,Paul and Najat
