Diabetics, and those with other chronic diseases, are usually acutely aware of their kidney health. Butkidney damage can also occur from heart attack, high blood pressure, urinary tract problems, and evenaccident. If your doctor suspects kidney damage, it is critical to work with a doctor to monitor and treatthe condition, according to the American Kidney Fund.

An injury or chronic disease can compromise kidney function. Diabetes is the most common culprit, followed by high blood pressure. Other issues include as lupus, genetic diseases, urinary tract problems, and nephrotic syndrome. Acute failure, an event that happens within two days, can be caused by drug use, heart attacks, and lack of blood flow, but might be reversed by treating the underlying cause. Living withchronic kidney disease or failure can mean dealing with itching, muscle cramps, nausea, swelling, troublesleeping, and irregular urine production as the kidney's become less and less able to filter excess toxins andpotassium from the blood in the body.

Once diagnosed, it is critical to work with a doctor to determine the overall health of the kidney. The mostcommon treatments treat and purify the blood in the body. Alongside active treatments, doctors will oftenrecommend a special diet avoiding potassium, added salt, phosphorus, and extra protein that are processedin the kidneys that can help improve kidney function by making them work less. Added salt is often foundin processed meats, cheeses, fast foods and even canned versions of otherwise healthy vegetables.

While current treatment options and changes to diet can help extend life dramatically, they do not representa permanent solution. New treatments on the horizon for chronic kidney disease revolve around curing orpreventing the conditions that lead to kidney failure, and kidney transplants remain the best long-termoption for dealing with kidney failure.

Being kissed under the mistletoe has been a holiday tradition for more than a thousand years. But mistletoe is not only associated with a gentle kiss, it has a lore all its own. To the ancientScandinavians, mistletoe symbolized peace. Enemies meeting under the mistletoe declared a truceuntil the following day. On a more domestic note, disgruntled spouses kissed and made up underthe greenery.

The Druids believed mistletoe possessed magical powers. Their priests cut the plant with goldensickles and gathered the trimmings on white cloth so the plant would never touch the earth andlose its enchantment.

In the Middle Ages, mistletoe was hung from ceilings in Europe to ward off evil, or it was dangledover doors to prevent the entrance of witches. If mistletoe was suspended over a crib, the child wassaid to be safe from kidnapping.

Viking lore describes the goddess of love, Frigga, who made each plant and animal promise not tokill her son Baldur. She forgot the mistletoe plant and Baldur was killed by aspear made from it. The white berries on the mistletoe are said to have beencreated from her tears.

When her son returned to life, Frigga proclaimed the mistletoe to be sacred. She kissed everyone who passed under it and decreed the plant shouldhenceforth bring love. This is said to be the origin of kissing under the mistletoe.

So go ahead. Kiss under the mistletoe, have fun doing it, and give a nod toFrigga for starting a very enjoyable custom.

The Work at Dakim Isn’t All Fun and Games.Hey, We Take a Lunch Break.

Seriously though, at Dakim, we’ve worked hard at making brain fitness fun. There’s nothing out there remotely like Dakim® BrainFitness. It transforms rigorous

cognitive exercises and the latest technology into extremely fun and engaging“brain games” created just for seniors. Dakim BrainFitness is designed for

everyone—from those that are sharp as tacks to individuals with mild cognitiveimpairment and even those with moderate dementia. And the Dakim BrainFitness

System self-adjusts the level of difficulty to match each individual’s ability, so it’salways challenging and engaging for each and every user, each and every time.

Since new content is downloaded regularly, our “gameologists” areat work night and day developing new and unique exercises.

There are currently over 125 different types of games available. Here are just a few we’re really excited about:

Famous People, Little Known Facts. Have fun, learn secrets about celebrities like James Cagney andWalter Cronkite while exercising short-term memory.

What’s Different? Helps improve visuospatialcognition. Users have to find a unique

image among many very similar images.

Aunt Mazie’s Minute Math. Arithmetic wasnever this entertaining. This exercise strengthens the

calculating part of the brain in a lightning round accompanied by the MinuteWaltz—which Aunt Mazie is quick to point out is actually a minute and one-half.

Scrambled Letters. The language center of the brain is challenged in anexercise that’s a favorite among those who love word games.

Phoenician Decoder. Exercises, Language, Short-Term Memory and CriticalThinking in a fun game that will remind you of the days when you had to

send in two box-tops and 25¢ to get your own decoder ring.

Name That Song. This exercise is literally atrip down memory lane. Everyone has fun hearingold favorites while exercising short-term memory.

As of this publication, there have been over 150,000user sessions and over a million “games” played. At Dakim,

we’ve visited hundreds of senior communities around the country and consultedwith just as many seniors. Personally. We will continue to do so to ensure all Dakim

brain games are appropriately challenging and entertaining. If you have anythoughts, feedback or anecdotes, we would love to hear from you.
