Activities to Entertain Your Loved One with DementiaAva M. Stinnett

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia affect people in different ways. Although it’snecessary to acknowledge your loved one’s disease and impairment, it’s just as important to learnabout their strengths and remaining abilities and find enjoyable activities that support these.

Activities help people with dementia engage with life and feel entertained. Whether it’s counting andsorting objects by shape or color, playing card games, arranging flowers, doing puzzles, or tending asmall garden, entertainment and social interaction can reduce agitation, challenging behaviors, anddepression as well as increase quality of life.•In addition to the activities just mentioned, theAlzheimer’s Association also recommends clipping coupons, stringing beads, cutting out pictures frommagazines and greeting cards, coloring pictures, and folding towels.

Another type of activity involves watching television shows. How do you choose what to watch? Manycaregivers recommend choosing programs with a simple plot to make viewing enjoyable. In somecases, your loved one might benefit from using a closed-captioning/subtitles feature. Keep in mindthat real-life crime or medical shows can be upsetting to elders.

The following television shows work well for people with dementia.

· America’s Funniest Home Videos· The Andy Griffith Show· Antiques Roadshow· Bonanza· The Carol Burnett•Show· The Dick Van Dyke Show· The Golden Girls· Gunsmoke· Hawaii 5-0· The Lawrence Welk Show· I Love Lucy

Leave It to Beaver· Game shows such as Jeopardy, The Price Is Right, and Wheel of Fortune· Classic movies such as Casablanca, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Roman Holiday· Musicals starring Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Doris Day, and Shirley Temple, as well as popular

musicals such as Singin’ in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz,•The Music Man, The King and I, andThe Sound of Music

· Documentaries on animals, wildlife, history, birds, and nature—especially those that have asoothing soundtrack

Regardless of what you choose, watch closely to see if your loved one has any preferences. If youhave trouble finding copies of your loved one’s favorite movies or television shows, networks such asTurner Classic Movies, TVLand, Animal Planet, and YouTube offer popular programs and films frompast eras. Remember to watch with your senior whenever you can. Sharing the experience can helpbuild new memories, and it will definitely give you something to talk about with your loved one.

When did exercise become something we “had to do” or “should do”, rather thansomething we did because we enjoyed it? When we were kids, most of our physicalactivity revolved around playing games with kids in the neighborhood and orga-nized school and community sports teams. Sure, the fitness was a payoff, but thereal benefit was continued motivation and the chance to bond with others in ourage group. As younger adults, we found community sports leagues, and even groupfitness classes at local gyms to help keep up motivated to stay fit. As we age, however, it just seems that we have fewer and fewer opportunities to participate ingroup fitness classes.

Some of the benefits of group exercise include:

A social and fun environment – if wecan have fun while we exercise, we”remore likely to continue to do it. Our Live2 B trainers keep participants engagedand motivated throughout the class.

Safe and effectively designed work-outs – Live 2 B Healthy exercises arespecifically designed to tackle the issuesthat the aging face – such as loss ofbalance, mobility and muscle tone. When taking a Live 2 B Healthy class, you know that we will cover all the impor-tant areas for you – and some you may not have even realized were important.

Accountability factor – When you participate in a group fitness class, there isalways lively conversation in the group. You will be missed if you don’t attend aclass. Don’t be surprised if one of your neighbors knocks on your door to checkin with you if you miss a class.

A workout that requires no prior knowledge or experience – Many peoplefind themselves intimidated by the complexity of the fitness equipment, espe-cially the computerized pieces. Attending a group fitness class, led by a certifiedpersonal trainer, will ensure that you are getting the most benefit out of thetime you spend in class. You will also be provided with modifications for specificlimitations.

Building the Case for Group Fitness Classes
