Happy Holidays Clear Lake Shores!

The holidays are upon us and it is  me to reflect on what an amazing year 2018 was for our li le slice of paradise.

We are beyond blessed to live where we do and experience the special place that Clear Lake Shores is.  I encour‐

age you to get out and get involved in 2019—you will be amazed by the people here!

November was a blessed month for Civic Club.  We held our annual Thanksgiving Dinner and it was a beau ful

meal with amazing fellowship.    Doris Sanders and Mary Freeman once again hit a home run with their organiza‐

on and many teams of volunteers.  Bryan Hoerner and his cook team prepared the delicious turkey again this

year.  Please say thank you to these ladies and gentleman for con nuing to serve at this event.  I enjoy seeing so

many former Civic Club leaders each year and am so thankful I can be a part of such a storied history in Clear Lake

Shores.

We followed up Thanksgiving dinner with a Veteran’s Day Celebra on at Sundial Park.  Bud Solmonsson and Allan

Batchelor put together a small event to honor the Veterans who have served us in the past, present, and in the

future.  Bud has worked the past year or so in ge ng a Veteran’s Bench with Home Depot and even though the

bench wasn’t ready for November 11th, it will be a welcome addi on to Sundial Park.   Thank you to Bud and Allan

for helping us to celebrate those who protect the freedoms we all love.

Civic Club hosts only one event in December; the Christmas Party on December 7th.  Priscilla Duffy and Shanna

McGinty are hos ng a Progressive Christmas Party.  If you would like to be one of the stops, please contact Priscil‐

la or Shanna.  We are all hoping for good weather for the evening.

January is the month Civic Cub takes a respite in ac vi es.  It is  me for all of our volunteers to rest and relax and

for the officers to start planning the 2019 calendar.  If you know of an event now that you want to help with next

year, send me an email and I will get you details!

February we will start having fun together again with Mancakes!  We do need a chair for this event and if you have

any ques ons about what that entails, contact Allan Batchelor!  Again if you are interested in chairing, please let

me know!

Finally, as 2018 draws to a close I hope you remember the great things about our neighborhood, forgive each oth‐

er for the inevitable drama that does occur here, and try to be a blessing to a neighbor in some small way.  It is the

rela onships we make and build that make Clear Lake Shores so unique and each and every one of us ma ers.

I hope you have a blessed holiday season, free of as much stress as possible, and full of love and happiness. And as

always, remember to savor the sunsets, enjoy the company, and try to meet someone new as o en as you can!

PARKS COMMITTEE By Chris Richardson

By now our island should be starting to look quite festive with all the Christmas decorations. Once again, the Pool & Parks Committee volunteers have helped in putting up the decorations adorning the entrance to our community, the bridge and the beautiful tree across from the clubhouse. A new taller tree was added last year by the City along with a lighted sailboat display. For many many years, Diana Chronister has been in charge of coordinating these decorations, creating a plan to make it all happen. We are so thankful for her efforts and we can't thank her enough. I never realized how difficult an

undertaking it is until I helped decorate a couple year ago! Another dedicated volunteer is Pege Wright who, once again, stepped up to make all the beautiful bows. We appreciate all her efforts. Also, thank you Jorge for helping get all the decorations on the light polls at the entrance & for getting the tree up for us to decorate.

A NEW EVENT IS HAPPENING THIS MONTH FIRST CHRISTMAS CAMPFIRE - SAT. DEC. 15, 2018

PAVILION AT JARBOE PARK 7-10 PM

The Veterans Memorial bench dedication was held Sun. Nov 11 at Sundial Lowell Brown Park. Nice to see so many of our CLS veterans represented from all branches of service. The manager of our local Home Depot attended. Home Depot is sponsoring the veterans bench. However, we were not able to view the bench as the arrival has been delayed. Bud Solmonsson, who coordinated this project, will notify us when the bench is installed at Sundial. We are very anxious to view the engraved bench.

I want to thank the members of this committee for all their time & efforts put forth in order to make our pool & parks more enjoyable for all our CLS residents!

WE WANT TO WISH ALL OUR ISLANDERS A JOYOUS AND SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON.

Your Pool & Parks Committee: Helle Brown, Suzanne Hubbard, Diana Hoerner, Diana Chronister, Cheryl Coward & me.

Article provided by Allan Batchelor The Seventh Annual CLS BBQ Cook Off was a hit. If you didn't make it you missed a good time. A record 16 Teams signed up. More than double the original. The downside is the park payed a small price for all the traf-fic, wheeled and otherwise but the flip side of that coin is, it's a park. That's why we have parks. It's a con-sistent someplace to go and socialize. Pretty sure the grass will grow back and the upside from Bark-tober-fest the place isn't covered in dog crap. Here's a list of the winners as I got it.

Volunteer Spotlight  by Doris Sanders

Diana Chronister “It’s beginning to look a lot . . . . “ Yes, folks, it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas here on the island, and

that is in no small part due to one woman, Diana Chronister.

About fi een years ago, around this  me of year, Diana was crossing the bridge on her way home from work

when she was struck by the paltry Christmas decora ons at the island entrance, and determined to do some‐

thing about  it. Not one  to  sit by and wait, Diana became a part of  the Parks Commi ee, a posi on she s ll

holds. And every year since, she has spearheaded the effort to brighten Clear Lake Shores with accumulated

decora ons.

Diana is quick to acknowledge that she could not accomplish this enormous task alone, and gives most credit

to Pege Wright, who spends hours making the bows that festoon the island during the holidays. But Pege is not

alone in her help; all of the members of the Parks Commi ee lend a hand, as do Jorge and Odiona and addi‐

onal volunteers who step up each year to help. The city provides Diana with a small budget each year, and

she hopes that the city will help with the purchase of new lights for the clubhouse, since the current ones are

worn out.

Having moved here twenty three years ago from the Dallas area, a move precipitated by her need to live near

Hobby Airport due to her job as a Southwest Airlines flight a endant (a job she s ll holds and loves), Diana did‐

n’t wait long to get involved. In 1999, when the Civic Club appeared unable to con nue due to lack of anyone

willing to serve, Diana and her friend Hillary stepped up to become president and vice‐president, respec vely,

of  the club.   That year she and Hillary co‐chaired  the Thanksgiving dinner, a  task  that she remembers as an

overwhelming one, and she con nued her involvement with the club by chairing countless Halloween, Easter,

and Christmas par es.

But that’s not all. Diana was one of the movers and shakers who began and worked on the Clear Lake Shores

Farmers’ Market, and she was on the Food Truck Design Review Commi ee.  And, as is o en the case with vol‐

unteers, she has been heavily  involved  in off‐the‐island ac vi es, mostly with the Stewart Elementary P.T.A.

Now that her sons are in middle and high school, her school involvement is less intense, limited to suppor ng

their ac vi es in sports and band, something both she and her husband Randy enjoy.

Randy, whom Diana met and married a few years a er moving to Clear Lake Shores, owns The Air Affair, the

air condi oning company used and appreciated by many on the island, and he takes part in his share of volun‐

teer ac vi es as well. We can thank him, for example, for (more than once) purchasing and installing the bas‐

ketball poles, backboards, and nets in the children’s park on Grove St. Both he and Diana are energe c, help‐

ful, coopera ve people to whom we are most grateful, par cularly  in December, when Diana and crew turn

our already‐lovely town into a winter paradise.

“I’m not very good at delega ng,” Diana says. “I end up doing it myself.” If doing it herself creates results like

her island Christmas decora ons, then we say, “Keep it up, Diana!”

"The city provides Diana with a  small budget each year, enough  to buy  the new

mesh material used to create the bows. Apparently, both Paul Shelley and George

Jones were very helpful in past years, and Diana looks forward to

con nuing that tradi on with the new city administrator, Brent Spier."

Greater Houston Area Real Estate news:

THERE'S NOTHING SPOOKY ABOUT OCTOBER HOUSTON HOME SALES

Despite low inventory, home sales see gains and prices reach October highs

After a down month in September, directly in luenced by the surge in post-Hurricane Harvey home sales exactly one year earlier, the Houston real estate market returned to more normalized conditions in October with gains in both sales volume and pricing.

According to the latest monthly report from the Houston Association of REALTORS® (HAR), 6,716 single-family homes sold in October compared to 6,417 a year earlier. That translates to a 4.7-percent increase. Year-to-date, home sales are 5.3 percent ahead of 2017’s record volume. Inventory grew slightly from a 3.7-months supply to 3.9 months.

The single-family home median price (the igure at which half of the homes sold for more and half for less) rose 3.6 per-cent to $234,653, and the average price increased 3.5 percent to $294,500. Both represent the highest prices ever for an October. All housing segments experienced gains except for homes priced at $150,000 and below The strongest seg-ment was the luxury market (homes priced at $750,000 and above), which jumped 12.0 percent in October.

Sales of all property types totaled 8,127, up 6.0-percent over the same month last year. October’s total dollar volume increased 9.3 percent to $2.3 billion.

With a calendar full of holiday parties, you may be feeling a little stressed about what to cook. Well, don't fret! These festive Pumpkin Cornbread Muffins are simple, versatile, and will leave your friends, colleagues or guests asking for the recipe! And it's up to you if you'd like to share it, or just deem it your new secret recipe- I won't tell :). And when I say this recipe is versatile, I mean it! You can make this cornbread with the standard ingredients, make it vegan, make it gluten free, or a combination of both! The substitution for each ingredient swap is written in the recipe. Pictured on this page, the pumpkin cornbread I made was a combination. I used gluten free flour, ground flax seeds + water as an egg replacement, 1/2 cup maple syrup & 1/2 cup honey, coconut milk, and melted butter. So they were gluten free, egg free, and mostly dairy free because my husband has a dairy allergy to milk (not but-ter though!). So make them however you'd like because the result is always INCREDIBLE! Cheers to that!

Pumpkin Cornbread Muffins Makes: 12 muffins or 1 loaf *Indicates the option for vegan or gluten free substitutions. 1 cup Bob's Red Mill flour or gluten free flour* 3/4 cup Bob's Red Mill corn meal flour 1 tsp baking power 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice 2 eggs or 2 flax eggs* (2 tbs ground flax seed + 4 tbs water) 1 cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup* 1/4 cup melted butter or canola oil* 1/4 cup whole milk or coconut milk* Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. In a large bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs (or flax eggs), pumpkin puree, honey (or maples syrup), butter (or canola oil), and milk (or coconut milk). 4. Then add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until combined. If too dry, add a couple table-spoons of the milk you are using, but the batter should be thick. 5. Scoop the batter into prepared muffin tins and bake for 20-25 mins or until a toothpick comes out clean. If you'd rather make a cornbread loaf, the cooking time will increase by about 5-10 mins. Enjoy!

. . . that David Skinner, the owner of Clear Creek Winery in Kemah, lives right here in Clear Lake Shores? On Narcissus, to be exact. Clear Creek offers wine tastings every day from noon to 5 in the winter except for Sunday and Monday; in the spring, it opens on Sunday, as well, and stays open until 8 on the weekends. . . . and that the winery offers memberships to its Bacchus Wine Club, with perks such as discounts on bottles of wine and special events? . . . and that David’s winery was the one offering free wine tastings at the November Civic Club meeting? Thank you, David. . . . and that, speaking of wine, quite a few people contributed wine to our first-ever wine-for-donations table at the island turkey dinner last month? It was a success, thanks to Kari Kelley, who solicited bot-tles and served, and to Audrey Dunegan, who also served, and to all those who contributed. Thank you, all! . . . and that, in this season of giving, two of our neighbors deserve a special mention? Marta Rudy once again spearheaded a drive to gather and deliver blankets, coats, and other warm items to the Star of Hope in Houston; she delivered them in November, some in time for the first really cold snap. And Diane Johnson and hubby Tom, in what has become an annual event, are gathering stuffed animals for nursing home residents. You may contribute at their house at 226 Narcissus, where you will find a box marked BEAR DROP-OFF. The Johnsons will deliver the stuffed bears and other animals on Christmas morn-ing, so you have plenty of time to contribute. . . . and that a new pizza place, Aroma, will be opening in Debi Starr’s old gallery space, some time in February? Oysters and salads are on the proposed menu, too, all being prepared by local Jim Ginger. Now that O2 has taken the old Opus spot, and Okie’s and Aspen’s are going strong, it looks like there will be even less need to travel far for good food and drink! . . . and that, if you have something to share here, you may contact me at [email protected] I’d love to share good news with all right here!

Gardening Tips for November By Julie Moncur Besides enjoying the cool weather, this time of year I so appreciate the absence of the sound of mow-

ing! Instead we get to enjoy the peaceful sound of the wind rustling through the trees while the leaves still remain. I also will not miss the bites of the no see um mosquitoes. Not because they are not out and about, but because we get to cover up from head to toe as the winter air surrounds. SWEET!

As the leaves begin to fall, don't throw out them out. . They make a nice starter for a compost pile or better yet mulch them into your lawn. Did you know the mulched leaves are literally the very best fertilizer for your yard. The decompos-ing leaves put nutrients back in the soil. Our island soil for many yards is very depleted from flood waters. Our orange trees began to tell that tale when the leaves began to lighten up near the tree bottoms. So some extra fertilizing will be needed come spring.

Now is also a great time to do an assessment of your landscape!

- If you like annuals, time to plant snapdragons, dianthus, delphiniums, pansies and primroses. My favorite are the deep purple/blue petunias. They are great for hanging baskets and they are the ones with the most fragrance;with a little care you can make them last through til spring and they will attract hummingbird scouts.

-This is a good time to plant azaleas and camellias. The largest azalea is the Formosa. They blend well in an informal woodlands or a formal fence row.

-Keep leaves raked for a healthier lawn and to reduce many fungal leafspot. problems of trees. As I mentioned before, consider mulching the leaves or putting in a compost pile.

-Water plants well before a freeze. Add a thick layer of MULCH to the root-zone of hibiscus and other tender plants. Pecan shells make a good mulch for hibiscus as the minerals leach out of the shells through watering.

-The more you feed pansies and remove old blooms, the more they bloom.

-Try a potted Norfolk pine as your Christmas tree this year! The island lost many of these (lost mine that had gotten 12 feet tall). They can usually be found for a fairly inexpensive price and grow relatively fast in the ground or in a pot.

-Decorate with poinsettias. Keep poinsettias evenly moist, out of drafts and near bright, filtered light.

-Be sure to make a fresh cut on your Christmas tree and promptly place it in water. If the cut dries up, the tree won’t take in any more water.

-Local garden centers have a good selection of last-minute gifts for the gardeners and ‘want-to-be’ gardeners in your life.

-Should a severe cold snap be forecasted, water lawn, shrubs, trees and potted plants if soil moisture is low. This will help reduce injury from the cold.

-Acidify azalea beds if needed by adding a soil acidifier available at many nurseries. Water in promptly.

-Till humus and manure into your garden soil and add 2 to 3 pounds of a slow release fertilizer per 100 square feet.

-Inspect holly, camellia, citrus and other plants for scale insects. Apply dormant oil now or in January. Follow label di-rections.

-Narcissus is a flower of the month and makes a long lasting gift which can be planted after the blooms fade and en-joyed for years.

-Wait until all chance of freezing weather is past before pruning tender plants, because pruning encourages new tender growth.

-More birds die of thirst than hunger. Add a shallow bird bath to the garden or a fountain as a holiday gift for the birds!

-Have unplanted bulbs lying around? Plant them by end of the month.

-Master Gardner fruit tree sales will be around the corner in the spring. Think of doing research if you might want to plant a tree. There are many that require low chill hours and do well in the area. This year we had a bumper crop of oranges despite last year’s flood.

-Start making your plans and goals for spring gardening to have something fun to look forward to in the New Year!

CITY NEWS **** The Holiday Edition ****

Greetings: I hope this Holiday Season is one of reflection in the past year and anticipation in looking forward to the next. Per-sonally it was a huge year for my family as we moved 1000 miles and started anew. As I look forward to 2019, I remind myself of things that impact all of us. One such item is the SH146 project that will extend from Red Bluff Rd in Seabrook to League City Parkway or TX-96. This project will start in February 2019 at a cost just over $200M and will take five years to complete. It is a signifi-cant project, in that it has impacted the local economy in Seabrook with the closure of 60 businesses. Some of these businesses have or will soon relocate and some sadly will disappear due to progress. If you travel through the north section of the project area mid-2019 expect delays. Expect travel restrictions and lane closures during the day will run from 9a – 3p and 9p -5a. Restricted lanes will be during peak commute times 5a-9a and 3p-9p. It will not be without frustrations and impact, but it will eventually improve an important travel corridor. This transportation project will improve traffic flow along SH146 and will ease the travel inconveniences we current-ly experience. It will also make access to Clear Lake Shores and our businesses different than we’ve grown accus-tomed. It will likely have some impact on our businesses as well, although none will be lost to project land acquisi-tion or right of way. You can visit a virtual project overview at: www.sh146.com. This was put together by the City of Seabrook and makes for an interesting fly over. As you view the animation, pay close attention to the “Exit to Kemah”, I personal-ly think should read “Clear Lake Shores.” The Marina Bay intersection will much different. This animation gives you an idea of the magnitude of the project and how the traffic flow is anticipated to look like in six short years. Closer to home and the end of this year, is our drainage improvements on the island. These will be completed soon. Final construction, sodding and road and drive restorations will be taking place very soon. This project will be completed in a couple weeks barring any unforeseen weather events. A substantial completion meeting on-site is scheduled for November 27th, so you may spy us out and about checking things. Additionally, off island there will be improvements to some FM2094 sidewalks. Chronic problem areas (narrow, crumbling and water holding sidewalks) have been identified and will be corrected. This project has been in the works for a year and is expected to be completed quickly once started. As I write today, we are experiencing a cold snap and low water levels thanks to our strong northern weather pat-tern. It reminds me of the snowy winters I left in Indiana and our white Christmases. You’ll be reminded a few more times in this issue about holiday related events. One such event is, The Grinch Parade, courtesy of the Police Department will be on December 17th at 5:30PM at the City Hall Parking Lot. This is fun kid-friendly event that will conclude with cocoa and cookies. Also, for those youngsters and oldsters, who have not had the opportunity to experience snow, or shoveling it – December 21 (the last day of school) at 1PM will be the ‘Snow Day’ sponsored by the City, at the Clubhouse. Come out and play in the white stuff. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
