2018 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and Week of Prayer for International Missions

The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering theme this year is “Every Church,

Every Nation.” The International Mission Board of the SBC reports

over 2.8 billion people who have little or no access to the Gospel.

Your prayers and gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering are a

tremendous support and blessing in getting His Message out to the

nations. Our Lottie Moon national goal is $160 million. The Arkansas

goal is $6 million.

Every penny given to this offering is used to support Southern Baptist

missionaries as they share the hope and grace we have in Jesus

Christ. Southern Baptists have been a world leader in sending and

supporting missionaries who are sharing the Gospel.

Balboa’s goal is $35,000.

Outreach Center News

Denise Hussein, OC Director

This month we had some time to reflect, analyze

and get opinions of what we have done in the OC

this year. We have offered various opportunities

throughout the months to attract attention to our

OC. We started with an awesome Grand Opening

weekend. We offered several weekly physical fit-

ness related options, Get Fit, Pickleball, basketball,

Putt Putt and walking. We also had Arkansas Wild-

life Presentations, Pool Tournaments, Putt Putt

Tournaments, HORSE Tournament, Movie Nights,

Game Nights (e.g. Price is Right, Match Game, Not

so New Newlywed Game), monthly Family Game

Nights and our monthly Tuesday Trivia. We had

the Clay Crosse Music Concert, the Scott Davis

Comedy concert and in December we will have our

first Dinner Theatre. We have had success in all of

these. Some have brought big numbers in attend-

ance while others have offered that one-on-one

getting to know each other opportunity in the

smaller settings. Based on the feedback we re-

ceive from our attendees we will continue to offer

this variety in the future. What may change is the

frequency of events because we have gotten the

feedback that we offer too many things. Our main

focus continues to be outreach, what will attract

that new person to come to an event? We want to

continue to provide you with opportunities to in-

vite your friends to join you in all the activities and

events we offer. This would all be impossible with-

out our OC volunteers. We appreciate our OC vol-

unteers who are faithful to this ministry, who pro-

vide that first impression with our guests while giv-

ing tours and other services. But you are a key in

all of this effort. We can plan and have a full calen-

dar but unless you personally invite your friends

and neighbors, we’ll miss our chance at sharing

our love for Jesus.

5

What do our attendees think of our OC?

If you have not visited the Balboa Baptist Outreach Center, I would recom-

mend you take the time to do so. The Outreach Center opens it's doors to

everyone. It has the greatest group of workers and volunteers you could ever

hope to meet. Everyone greets you with a smile and warm welcome. They

are all so helpful. The Center offers a wide variety of activities for everyone.

One of the best programs that it offers is the Get Fit classes. They have certi-

fied leaders that head the classes and do a fabulous job. There are so many

other activities that you can participate in. The Center puts out a monthly

calendar that is full of things to attend. The most outstanding thing about this Center is the sense you get

from the Christian fellowship that is displayed. Since attending this Center, it has filled a void in my life. I

have found a wonderful christian family and have made a large number of new friends. My life has so

much more sense of purpose. I look forward to the days when I am able to attend the activities. May God

continue to bless all those who lovingly give of their time to make this Center a success.

God bless you

Mark your calendars!!

From your SMT (Safety MinistryTeam):

This is the new SMT schedule for the locking of doors for

Sunday and Wednesday services:

Sunday mornings, the choir entrance door will be locked

at 9am and unlocked after service.

Sunday night, the choir entrance door, the entrance door

by the old kitchen, and the Ponce entrance door (by classroom #107) will be

locked at 5:55pm.

Wednesday nights, the entrance door by the old kitchen and the Ponce entrance

door (by classroom #107) will be locked at 5:30pm to secure the areas for AWANA

and so a sweep can be made before the children arrive.

I am aware that this is a change to past procedures, but it’s necessary for the protection of

our congregation, as the SMT team tries to provide protection for our members and guests.

Once again, I apologize for these inconveniences, but the world we live in now makes these

changes necessary.

Thank you for helping implement these changes.

Bo Johnston, Director of SMT

“Journeying Through Grief”

By Kenneth C. Haugk

The Grief Touch Team, led by Deacon Bobby Tullos, has donated booklets available

for members to check out of the library titled “Journeying Through Grief”.

They are written by Dr. Kenneth C. Haugk, a pastor, psychologist and the founder of

Stephens Ministries. Dr. Haugk writes from personal experience after his wife’s death in

2002 and finding very little help available for those who are suffering grief.

The booklets are short, only 41 pages, brief and to the point. When a loved one dies,

people often struggle with difficult, painful feelings. Many feel abandoned by friends,

relatives and even God.

They are helpful whether read one at a time or all in one sitting. For those experiencing the

recent loss of a loved one it is recommended that the booklets be read one at a time; how-

ever, if the loss has been several months or more it may be best to check out all 4 booklets

at once. Each person experiences grief in their own way and on their own unique schedule.

They are designed to cover the first year of loss but many have found them to be beneficial

even years after a loss. They are highly recommended.

December is a wonderful time of the year when we get to celebrate the season of joy and hope. Most of us look forward to the age-old carols, church programs, and family gatherings that carry the good news and glad tidings of Christmas.

Here are a few books from our Christmas collection in the BBC library to help you remember that Christ is the focal point of Christmas: “Midnight Clear” (Jerry B. Jenkins) is a modern day parable about how seemingly insignificant acts of grace can make a profound difference. A middle-aged man, jobless and recently evicted; an old woman estranged from her family; a frustrated youth pastor; a young mother and son spending their first holiday alone since her husband's accident; and a gas station owner forced to work on a holiday. But hope often comes when we least expect it. As midnight approaches, these five randomly cross paths, changing each others' lives. “Till Morning is Nigh” (Leisha Kelly) tells of one year after the Worthams and Hammonds lost both a dear mother and selfless friend in one terrible night. A night in 1932 when a bittersweet occasion turns to crisis when George Hammond disappears, leaving his many children worried and alone. With too many mouths, too little money, and a mysterious illness taking hold of some of the children, she has her doubts that God will pull them through. But she wasn't counting on the miracle of a simple, paper nativity. “The Unfinished Gift” (Dan Walsh) is set in December of 1943 and is a fabulous story of redemption and forgiveness. Ian is an old man without his son. Patrick is a young boy without his father. On his Christmas list are only three items. He wants the army to find his father; he wants to leave his grandfather's house; and he wants the dusty wooden soldier in Grandfather's attic – the one he is forbidden to touch. This engaging story of a family in need of forgiveness reminds us of the small things that affect powerful change in our hearts – a young boy's prayers, a shoe box of love letters, and even a half-carved soldier, long forgotten. This story of reconciliation will touch your heart. You can find these Christmas stories and many more on the shelves marked Collected Stories on the wall to your right as you enter the library from the hall.

WE INVITE YOU TO COME BY AND CHECK US OUT!

Sherry Karr, Librarian

Christmas Greetings from the BBC Library Committee!

CLARA BURNLEY

Clara was born in Indonesia; her father died when she was twelve. Her uncle, whom she termed “a man of love,” moved her to Singapore for her education. Her cousins became her brothers and sisters and she keeps in touch with them via Skype. Her mother, who is ninety years old, and brother still live in Indonesia. Her uncle was her hero who cared for her and helped her get a good education; her mother taught her to be prudent. She graduated high school and began working in real estate, and eventually owned her own company. She met and married her husband who worked for the construction company, Raymond International. They moved back to his hometown, Shreveport, LA, in 1999 where he continued working until they

moved to the Village in 2007. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 and soon passed away. Her constant companion is her golden retriever, Thien Thien, which means “super sweet” and she spends her time spoiling him. Her hobbies include playing pickle ball where she met Gwen and Richard Lederfine who had a great impact on her life, introducing her to Balboa Church and Pastor Denny. Clara comes from a Catholic background, but loves her Faith Sunday School class, taught by Bob Moore, where she is learning to understand her Bible. She was baptized in October and is under our Watch Care. She would like you to know that she is very open and outspoken, so when you see her say hello and get to know this petite, personable young woman.

PHIL & PATTY MASK Phil and Patty grew up in the local area—she in the Salem community and Phil in Benton. Patty was born in Ottumwa, Iowa and her family moved to AR when she was thirteen. After graduating Bryant HS, she worked at St. Vincent’s hospital for two years then she began a 23 -year career with Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance, retiring in 2001. She held several positions in the company and ended as supervisor of the electronic services division, training medical facilities to file their claims electronically. Actually, she retired medically because of an automobile accident in 1997. Phil graduated from Benton HS, joined the U.S. Navy—was on

active duty for 3.5 years, and as a reserve 1.5 years with the 4th Marine Division. He had always wanted to be in law enforcement; therefore, after his tour of duty in the Navy, he attended UALR earning an associate’s degree in law enforcement and a BA in criminal justice and psychology. Although Phil was aided by the GI Bill, he worked a 40 -hour week, attended college carrying a full load, and had three off-duty jobs. That’s commitment!! After service 22 years with the NLR police department (serving with his brother Spurgeon), he wanted to serve his local community —he was elected Saline County Sheriff in 2001, retiring in 2008. Phil and Patty have two grown children, Chris and Tiffaney. They and their families live in the local area. Naturally, “Spurge” and Brenda were instrumental in their selecting Balboa as their place of worship. They had been searching all these years for a church in which they could really feel “at home,” and they felt that after attending Balboa. They are visiting several SS classes. Get to know the Masks, you will surely find two new friends.

13

ARNOLD & ROSANNE GEORGE

Arnold, “Skip,” graduated HS in North Little Rock, enrolled in Ouachita

Baptist, graduated with a BS in biology in 1975—two years ahead of Pastor

Denny. He spent one year in the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. Returning home,

he applied for a job with an employment agency which led him to a

“temporary” job with a farm cooperative in NLR. This “temporary” job

lasted forty-two years! He began with Southern Farmers’ Cooperative in

NLR, moved to Kansas City with Farmland Industries, and then to Minneapolis, MN with CHS as a regional

account manager for the last sixteen years. So, reaching the ripe old retirement age, he gave his notice, they

closed on the sale of their home, and headed South. They had already been introduced to the Village by high

school friends of Rosanne.

Speaking of Rosanne—she was a small-town girl from Marvell, AR. She worked while in HS, and after

graduating, she worked for Dixie Furniture and Marvell Public School as a bookkeeper. She married young

and began her family. She became a bookkeeper for the Farmers’ Oil Cooperative in Helena, which was a

member coop of Southern Farmers’ where Skip worked. When she had questions she would talk with Skip,

not knowing their paths would cross positively. Skip had an off-duty job in security at Barton Coliseum in

Little Rock, so he offered to get her and a friend tickets to the fair, and to concerts in the coliseum to see such

artists as the Beach Boys and Barry Manilow. The rest is history; they married, moved to Minnesota and lived

there happily for 16 years before returning to AR.

Their son, Glenn, lives in the Village. He has a daughter Josie who lives with her mom in Conway. Their

son, David, lives in Sherwood, AR.

Skip has been very active in their church in Minnesota. He was a deacon, SS teacher, and as he said in a

small church, you have many jobs. They both enjoy music, reading and traveling. They attend Dr. Polly

Brown’s Impact SS class. Get to know Skip and Rosanne, a friendly couple, you will be blessed.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
