From the Pastor’s

Desk

New Saints Last weekend we experienced a remarkable piece of history. Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II were canonized as saints of the universal Church. What a blessing for us to witness two popes from our own era being transformed by their ministry to the point where we acclaim them as saints of God. The canonization of these two popes serves to remind us that we are all called to be saints. The challenge we all face is being faithful to the Gospel in the midst of our work and the responsibilities we are faced with. We may be tempted to think, “If only I didn’t have to raise a fam-ily, work 50 hours a week and, manage my chronic back pain, I could be a saint.” I’m sure that St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II would tell us that it is learning how to embrace the burdens of life with humility, joy and trust in God that makes us saints. The chal-lenges and trials of life are best not thought of as distractions but as opportunities to live humbly, relying on the love and mercy of God. We now have two new saints who can inspire us to be holy. Our Jubilee Jamboree last week, planned as part of our Sesqui-centennial observance, was a valuable spiritual experience. Some-times we’ve called this kind of event a “Parish Mission” or a Parish Retreat.” We wanted to give parishioners an opportunity to stretch spiritually and grow in their faith. Dr. Terry Nelson Johnson led us in an enjoyable exploration of how we can practically live our faith with joy and purpose. I wish more parishioners had taken advantage of this opportunity. I realize we are all busy and we can’t participate in everything, but if our faith is going to remain strong and fresh, we have to make the time for growing our spiri-tual lives. Ordinarily we’re not going to attend one event and feel like our lives have been forever changed. It’s the cumulative effect of participating in a number of things over a longer period of time that gradually changes us. It takes a conscious effort to make faith a priority. But when we do, our lives begin to change and a new peace and purposefulness of life emerges. I hope you will think about what you can do to keep faith strong in your life. Happy Anniversary This week Deacon Bob Poletto celebrates the 20th anniversary of his ordination as a deacon of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Deacon Bob has served St. Mary Parish since he was ordained. When I ar-rived at St. Mary as the new pastor in January 1996, Bob Poletto was invaluable to me as I tried to get to know the parish, its needs and its way of doing things. There’s never been a time when Bob wasn’t ready and willing to do whatever I asked of him. When the Archdiocese ordained Bob they got a double gift because Sue

Poletto, Bob’s wife, has also been a great blessing for St. Mary. Sue has been responsible for PADS and has orchestrated our PADS ministry for many years. Let us keep our deacon couple in our prayers as we honor them and thank them for 20 faithful years of service! School Bells Right around this time of year students begin to count the days till summer vacation. But parents ought to be planning now for the next school year. I want to make an appeal to all our Catholic parents to seriously consider a Catholic day school for their children. We have a unique and great system of Catholic education in our area; we call it the Catholic Consortium of Lake County. Three parishes are working together to pro-vide two PreK-5 schools and one Middle School. One of those PreK-5 schools is housed here at St. Mary. Our Middle School, Frassati Catholic Academy, finds its home in Wauconda. We live in an age when growing up Catholic is not easy. Our growing secular culture makes it difficult for our young people to catch the faith, be shaped by Gospel values, and discover the joy of Christian living. How are young people today learning how to make good moral judgments and live a virtuous life? Where will they find a safe place to ask the questions that really matter to them? Catholic Education is not about adding a “religion class” in the curriculum. Catholic Education addresses the whole person in a learning environment that includes all the basic components of a good, well rounded education but with a depth of meaning and purpose that ultimately forms new Christian leaders. If you haven’t thought about a Catholic school before, now is a good time to take a closer look. Don’t dismiss the idea based on cost. There is some financial assistance available today that may work for your family. Call St. Mary School for PreK-5 at 847-223-4021 or for 6t–-8th grade call Fras-sati Catholic Academy at 847-487-5600. Let the joy of Easter continue to refresh your spirit! Fr. Ron Lewinski

SVdP Pasta Party a Great Success! The Society of St. Vincent de Paul [SVdP] at St. Mary of the Annuncia-tion would like to express our appreciation for your contributions to-ward a successful 2014 Pasta Party. Your generosity at this year’s event will help to support those in need within our community. Thank you for your spirit, compassion, and fellowship. Our appreciation and gratitude also go out to: Phil Gilardi Jr. of Philly G’s Restaurant in Vernon Hills for the delicious pasta dinner; everyone who donated scrumptious desserts; the smiling teens who donated their time wherever needed; businesses/vendors and parishioners for raffle donations and supplies; the St. Vincent de Paul Conference Members who donated countless hours to plan, set-up, and serve at the party; and everyone who came and shared a meal with us. Thank you for allowing us to serve you at this year’s St. Vincent de Paul Pasta Party. If you were not able to make it this year, we look forward to serving you at the next Pasta Party in 2015.

Celebrating Our Earth! The students of St. Mary school celebrated Earth Day (April 22) by gathering outside to raise the Flag and recite the morning Pledge of Allegiance. Stu-dents took a photo with the Earth Flag that was earned through the SWALCO Earth Flag Program. Afterwards, during an assembly, students presented art projects they created from recycled materials using various items that other-wise would be considered trash. To view more pictures or for more information about our school please call 847-223-4021 or visit our website at www.stmaryfc.org/school

During the pastorate of Fr. Frank Bay it was decided to replace the central hot air heating system with steam heat. In order to accomplish this, more digging had to be done. The walking space under the church was enlarged, and a considerable amount of hand digging had to be done. Everyone helped, and with the aid of wheel barrows and a prodigious effort on the part of all, it was finally done to their satisfaction. The heating system itself was installed by the Lenzen Brothers of Grayslake at a cost of about $500.

During our Sesquicentennial year the History Committee presents weekly selections from the treasure chest of our precious past.

Friday Night, Pardner!

Dear. St. Mary Friends, Please accept our heartfelt appreciation for the love, concern and compassion you’ve expressed to our family at the tragic death of our beloved son, Danny. Please keep him in your continued prayers. To the kind, kind women who provided the funeral luncheon we are forever grateful. You provide a wonderful ministry. The Family of Danny Hansen

Feast Days of Mary Tuesday, Mary 13th - Our Lady of Fatima and Friday, May 30th - The Visitation Please join us after the 8:00 AM Mass in as we recite the Rosary.

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer Today’s Gospel is probably my favorite episode in all of Scrip-ture. As you heard at Mass, the story is of two disciples walk-

ing along the road to the town of Emmaus (pronounced eh-MAY-us) on the afternoon of the first Easter Sunday (Luke 24:13-35). They leave Jerusalem in the aftermath of Jesus’ execution. (Leaving Jerusalem is symbolic of lost faith, lost hope.) Along the way, mired in grief and shattered hopes, and confused over re-ports of an empty tomb, they encounter a stranger who proceeds

to break open the Scriptures and explain all of the prophecies fore-shadowing that the messiah would have to suffer and die. Intrigued by the insights of their traveling companion, the disciples invite the stranger to stay the evening with them. As they sit down for dinner, the stranger breaks bread and the disciples recognize that the man at their table is actually Jesus! Jesus then disappears from their midst and the two disciples say “Were not our hearts burning within us as we walked along?” The disciples immediately head back to Jerusalem to spread the news that they have encountered the Risen Lord. The early Church found in this story a template for the experience of the liturgy…and of life. We are on the road of life, often downhearted and burdened by life’s difficulties. We often fail to recognize Jesus in the midst of our daily lives, probably because we don’t expect to see him and thus don’t bother to look with perception. But at Mass, the Word of God is broken open and our hearts start to burn within us. As we gather to break bread around the table of the Lord, we encounter the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Energized, inspired and full of joy, we head out to spread – and live – the Good News. During this Easter Season we celebrate not just the historical event of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead, but that we have the Risen Lord in our lives here and now. We encounter him in the lives of those we meet as we journey through life. We encounter Him in the proclama-tion of the Scriptures and in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. How often do we say “Mass is boring”? Or are we in a hurry to leave? We need to recapture the joy and amazement of the first disciples in meeting the Risen Lord in the Scriptures that are pro-claimed and in the bread that is blessed, broken, and shared. On a personal note, this past week marked the 15th anniversary of my ordination to the diaconate. (In a wonderful coincidence – work of the Holy Spirit? – I was ordained on the same date, May 1, that my oldest brother, Tom, was ordained a priest…38 years earlier!) This past week was also the 20th anniversary of Deacon Bob Poletto’s ordination. While God probably doesn’t see milestones ending in 0s or 5s as hav-ing extra importance, we humans seem to find them to be a good time to take stock of our lives. As I reflect on these years that have gone by in a flash, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that God has given me to serve Him and His People. I am grateful to the countless people who have allowed me the great privilege of sharing their jour-neys in good times and bad, who have inspired me with their faith, kindness and example, who have supported me and endured my foi-bles and limitations. I am especially grateful and indebted to my wife, Maryann. Her behind-the-scenes contributions (from critiquing homi-lies to doing administrative chores to providing doses of common sense) and her patience with a husband who is often absent from normal domestic tasks (leaving her to pick up the slack) are invaluable gifts that I can never repay. She makes my ministry possible…and far better than if I were left to my own devices!

Eucharistic Adoration in the Jubilee Year For the Well-being and Mission of the Parish

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Friday, May 9, 2014 The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration on Friday, April 25, 2014, after the 8:00am Mass continuing until 10:00 PM. Please note the benediction time. Adoration takes place in the Eucharistic Chapel. Stop at the books shelves by the West Chapel door and pick up meditations and spiritual books. All are welcome. The sign-up book is in the narthex. If you sign up and at the last minute cannot be there, please call the church office 847-223-0010 or Gretchen O’Connor 224-545-1712 so we may reschedule and always have an adorer present during adoration. Even if you did not sign-up, stop and visit with our Lord.

PADS Volunteer Dinner The PADS ministry will have it's volunteer dinner on Wed., May 7 @ 6:30 pm in the small church basement. Anyone who helped our site this season is invited for fun, fellowship and thanksgiving for another successful season. Please call the parish office or sent a RSVP to [email protected]. We are blessed with so many won-derful volunteers and we want to show our appreciation. Keep our guests in your prayers.

Thank you for your support, kindness and companionship. It is a great blessing in my life that I have the opportunity to work, pray and play with the wonderful people of this faith community. I ask for your prayers that I may continue to grow as a disciple of the Lord and min-ister of the Gospel for whatever years remain ahead (hopefully a few more 0s and 5s!). When deacons are ordained, they are each handed the Book of the Gospels by the bishop as he instructs, “Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach.” I hope and pray that we may all embrace this instruction as you and I wind our way along the road to Emmaus with our hearts burning within us. May we learn to see the Risen Christ in our midst – in word, in sacrament, and in the love of others. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

donation of $2.00 per rose, 3 roses for $5.00, or $20.00 per dozen. Expectant mothers will be presented a free rose. These roses make beautiful gifts as well as a strong statement on the value of human life and motherhood. Proceeds from the benefit help Lake County Right to Life provide funds necessary to continue efforts to defend and protect the unborn, innocent, unwanted, handicapped, and elderly who are at grave risk in our society. Efforts include: educational newsletters, ac-tive web site, video/book/pamphlet library, health and end of life issues forums, speakers for schools and community groups, and referrals to crisis pregnancy centers. Lake County Right to Life is a non-profit, volunteer organization.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP May 2014 Dear Friends in Christ, Mother’s Day is a day to honor the special women—mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends—who have fed, nurtured, loved and shaped us into the people we are to-day. It is through their unconditional love

that we begin to understand the depth of Christ’s love for us, and his command to share that love with one another. Mother’s Day is therefore an appropriate day to support a critical mission of the Church: the care of the poor and vulnerable. By participating in the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection, each one of us has the opportunity to share Christ’s love with those who are hungry, homeless, hurting and in need of help. We are greatly blessed in the Archdiocese of Chicago to have an extraordinary social-service agency like Catholic Charities to help us fulfill Jesus’ command to care for those in need. As we share our resources with the poor and vulnerable, we not only allow God to bless others through us, but we are blessed as well. The poor teach us the virtues of tolerance, meekness and pa-tience. God comes to us cloaked in poverty. It is through our connec-tion to the poor that we encounter the suffering Christ and so hum-ble ourselves and truly open our hearts to his tremendous grace and mercy. I thank you for your support, and I invite you to again join me in making a contribution to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. Your gift will help serve more than one million people of all ages, races and religious in Cook and Lake Counties, including one out of every three citizens of the City of Chicago. May God bless you and your families. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

NOTICE Mike Alandy, a parishioner of St. Mary of the Annunciation, is scheduled to be or-dained to the Order of Deacon on May 18, 2014 at Holy Name Cathedral by His Emi-nence, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago. This is a public announcement of the upcoming ordination

and fulfills the canonical requirement. Catholics are obliged to reveal any impediments or circumstances that would prevent Mike Alandy from receiving Sacred Orders and should contact the pas-tor or cardinal with such information as soon as possible if there is a serious question about the candidate’s suitability for ordained ministry.

Commemorative Parish History Books The commemorative Sesquicentennial parish history is now available in the parish office dur-ing normal business hours. "Nothing is Impossi-ble with God: the Story of St. Mary of the An-nunciation, Fremont Center, Illinois" commemo-rates our rich history and spiritual heritage from the very beginning of the Catholic community in Fremont Center to the events of our Sesquicen-tennial year. The richly illustrated narrative hon-ors the faithful witness of generations and the

abundant blessings our parish has enjoyed over the past 150 years and should inspire us to make our own contribution to the proud his-tory of our parish and be faithful stewards of the sacred inheritance we have received from our ancestors in Christ. Available at the parish office, $10.00.

For anyone interested in a more extensive chro-nology of key events in the history of the parish and Fremont Center with a particular focus on the German families who pioneered the parish, "The Chronicle of St. Mary of the Annunciation" is also available. This exhaustively-researched volume features never-before-seen excerpts from the correspondence of early parishioners,

land maps, newspaper clippings, photos and more and is available on a print-on-demand basis at: http://www.cafepress.com/stmaryfc. Both of these attractive volumes are a great addition to any parishioner’s library and also make great gifts! Both books are brought to you by the Sesquicentennial History Com-mittee. Happy reading!

Blessing of St. Pedro Colungsod Statue Sunday, May 18, 11:30 Mass This Roman Catholic young Filipino saint and was a migrant, sacristan and mission-ary catechist, who along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary, Diego Luis de San Vi-tores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672. While in Guam, Calungsod preached Christianity to the Chamorro peo-ple through catechism, while baptizing in-fants, children and adults at the risk and expense of being persecuted and eventu-ally murdered. Through Calungsod and San Vitores' missionary efforts, many native

Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism. Calungsod was formally beatified on March 5, 2000 by Pope John Paul II, and was officially canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City on October 21, 2012.

Calling All Adult Missionaries to Appalachia Our parish is forming a group of caring hearts to serve in Appalachia in Eastern Kentucky this June 15–18 with Hand in Hand Ministries. This work will require 20–40 people to help with home repairs, visits with local residents and sharing the joy of the Gospel with all that we meet. No specific construction skills required. An informational meeting is planned for April 22, 2014 at 7 pm in meeting room 1 and a team formation meeting is planned for April 29, 2014 at 7 pm in meeting room 1. Please direct your interest or questions to Veronica Hertel at [email protected] or 847 812-9111.

Serve at Pacific Garden Mission on May 18 The Mission Committee invites you to serve at Pacific Garden Mis-sion. We have visited several times this year and welcome you to come again if you have participated in the past, or try it out for the first time. Come as a family, bring a friend, or come as an individual wiling to help. We will make beds, prepare and serve lunch and tidy up. DATE: SUNDAY, MAY 18. TIME: 12:30-3:30. Fliers and Visitors' Packets are available on The Mission Post table in the narthex.

Testimony from a recent missioner: "I went to the Pacific Garden Mission for the first time with my two chil-dren, ages 14 and 12. We served the second lunch meal in the cafeteria to women at the mission. Our task was to assemble plates, sandwiches, bowls and soup for the women. After we had finished serving, we cleaned up the cafeteria tables, took the dishes to the kitchen and wiped the tables. Then, we swept the floor and reset the tables for the dinner meal. It was an eye opener, as they told us they serve about 600 people per day and at full capacity, they can sleep 1300 at the mission. The mission has people who stay overnight and others who come for a day program, all of which include Bible study. It was good to be able to help the homeless with so many other volunteers, from preteens to seniors. I will definitely return to help the people at the mission."

Kathleen Arata - parishioner RSVP to Kathy Payette (847) 949-1633 or [email protected] or Jim Robinson (847) 970-9213 or [email protected]. Need to car-pool? Contact Kathy or Jim. PGM's address in 1458 Canal Street, Chicago. If you would like to donate sheets for their beds, please drop them off in the coat closet in the bin marked "PGM". The shelter has over 900 beds and some of the sheets are completely worn out. Twin fitted and flat sheets would be greatly appreciated.

Preparing for Marriage at St. Mary We rejoice with couples preparing for Christian marriage and are happy to assist brides and grooms as they reflect upon the significance of marriage as a sacrament and a way of living the Christian life together.

If you are planning to be married at St. Mary of the An-nunciation, the first thing to do is to secure the date and time of your wedding at the parish. This should be done before booking a place for your reception. To secure a date and time for the wedding liturgy the engaged couple needs to make an appointment with one of the parish priests or deacons at which time a date and time for the wed-ding will be confirmed. We cannot schedule a wedding over the phone.

To assist engaged couples in preparing for their vocation as a married couple the Church requires a pastoral preparation that includes a Pre-Cana session and participation in FOCCUS, a mar-riage preparation instrument administered in the months prior to the wedding. St. Mary of the Annunciation also has a helpful planning packet for couples, which is available at the parish office.
