Dr. David Wellisch, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UCLA, a graduate of the Clini-cal Psychology program, recently made a generous donation to the Department to support the Clinical

program, its Test Library, and graduate student research.

From the Chair

Have you ever heard the saying, “We plan, and God laughs?” That

describes my path to the Chair’s

office. I was beginning to plan for my life after teaching at SF State

when I was asked to consider becoming Department Chair. I

had little time to think about what that might mean before I was

elected and suddenly attending meetings with Dr. Jeff Cookston,

the outgoing Chair, who gracious-ly helped in the transition. Since

many of my close colleagues in the Department have sat in this

office before me, I had good role models (Ken Monterio, Caran

Colvin, John Kim, Sacha Bunge, and Julia Lewis to name a few). I

even have mementos from for-mer chairs who are no longer with

us: a photo from Susan Hartman Taylor (our Hartman scholarship

is in her honor), and a card from Lilly Berry, who passed away this

fall (next year, we’ll be offering scholarships in her honor as

well). So I’ve had a lot of support in becoming Chair and in psychol-

ogy we know how important so-cial support can be in handling

stressful roles. However, unlike

some of the other leadership positions I’ve had, being Chair is

more engaging and less stressful than I anticipated. That’s be-

cause it calls for a different kind of leadership: being a leader

among peers rather than a man-ager. My main tasks are listening

to others and trying to help them achieve their goals and the de-

partment’s objectives. It reminds me of my first leadership role in

Psi Chi ‘back in the day.’ To be honest, being Chair is not as

much fun as being a student leader in Psi Chi but it is fun

when something good happens like when the Curriculum Commit-

tee’s Student Success grant pro-posal is successful or when our

first Study Abroad program, put together by Dr. Jae Paik and Dr.

Rita Rodriguez, is launched. Or when we re-launch the Depart-

ment newsletter so we can share information about what is hap-

pening in the Department with others. Hope you enjoy reading

the latest Psych News!
