    Presidents ReportBy R. Dennis Callahan

First off, Id like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended the November meetingand hope that everyone took the time to vote that day.

The Convention in Charlotte North Carolina was outstanding!!! If you were able to makit, you know what I mean. The venue was great, easily accessible in uptown Charlotte.Saturday and Sundays business: There were 9 proposed by-law amendments to be presenteOut of the 9, 4 were passed. All others were rejected.

It was also time to elect a new ASPE Board of Directors. Those elected to office werePresident, William Hughes Junior; V.P. Technical, Mitchell Clemente; V.P. Legislative,

David DeBold; V.P. Education, Jeffrey Ingertson; V.P. Membership, Scott Steindl

V.P. Affiliate, Vincent Scriboni; and Treasurer Gary Mahoney.

Opening up the Expo was Keynote Speaker Kyle Petty, part of NASCARs most famoufamily. The Expo floor was a stellar array of manufacturers and their products with mannew and exciting things to see. As always there were various technical sessions that weavailable. Not only were there ASPE classes, but the Charlotte Cast Iron Foundry providedtours to ASPE members, so there was quite a bit to choose from. Sessions that I attendehad good attendance.

Sunday nights welcome party was a great event, held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame anwhat a party it was. A lot of interactive activities from: Being an announcer at a NASCrace to a timed challenge for changing a race car tire and seeing actual wrecked race caIt was an interesting night.

    VP Technical Report

    By: Paul Hellickson

ASPE Convention in Charlotte North Carolina

What a great time we had in Charlotte at the 2012 ASPE Convention. For those of you that missed it; youreally missed out on some very good technical sessions as well as a great time with industry professionals from

around the country. Some of the Technical sessions I personally attended covered topics such as:

PERC (Plumbing Efficiency Research Coalition). They did a very good presentation on drain line carry. They are looking to have final results on their studies sometime in early 2013 Roof Drain Design Considerations. This was presented by past ASPE President Julius Ballanco and wasvery informative. Be on the look out for changes to the national codes as a result of the research Julius and theASPE research committee have done in this area of design.

I also participated in the VP Technical Committee meetings. Some of the things that were discussed were:

Changes to the Hot Water Design handbook Various ASPE publication handbooks that are being created are on Hospital / Healthcare design, Fire protec-tion systems a BIM Handbook as well as an ASSE/ASPE dictionary.

I just want to point out that all of these publications are available for purchase on the ASPE website.

I am also happy to tell you that the St. Louis Chapter received, two awards, the Member Retention Award andthe Certification of appreciation for support of the Research Foundation. All in all, the Convention and Expowas a truly worthwhile event.

Next up is the ASPE Symposium in September 2013, which will be held in Orlando, Florida. I know its a

ways off but, ASPE 50th Anniversary Convention will be in 2014, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois.

We have given away the 2 full sets (volumes 1, 2, 3 & 4) of the latest ASPE Plumbing Design Handbooks to acouple of new members, Ms. Kelly Dedeke with Kuhlmann Design Group INC. and Mr. GorDon M. Patterson withKJWW.

I was unable to attend the PSC Tabletop held at the Ameristar Casino on November 1st, so I dont have any-thing to report on that.

Our next chapter meeting will be on December 4th.Make your plans to join us. Hope to see all of you

    then.

The following is reprinted from an ASPE Society e-mail sent last week regardinga new standard for efficient water use in buildings. Please take the time to review theinformation and provide me your comments by December 1st so that I may compile andforward them in time for the ASPE Legislative Committee conference call the first weekof December. In May 2007, ASPE entered into an agreement with the American Societyof Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc. (ASHRAE), U.S.Green Building Council (USGBC), and American Water Works Association(AWWA) to develop an American National Standard for the efficient use of water

in building, site and mechanical systems. The standard is now out for publ ic review,so we ask you, as the legislative representative of your chapter, to take some timeto review the standard and let us know i f you see any technical issues.

The ASPE Legislative Committee will be holding a conference call the firstweek of December to finalize any publ ic comments to be submitted by ASPE, soplease send your comments to [email protected] no later than November 30,2012.

When submitting your comments, it is important to provide the following:-Item or section for which you have a concern-Rationale for your concern-Proposed change in text to alleviate your concern

    NOVEMBER MEETING.

I want to first start off with a brief apology regarding the November meeting. The speaker did not present onanything close to what I wanted him to cover. The whole focus of the meeting should have been on where theUPC is going as it relates to changes in the code regarding water efficient plumbing design and that just simplydid not happen. Part of the reason is because some of that information is still in the works. Hopefully whensomething more concrete is available we can try this topic again.

    DECEMBER MEETING

With the apology out of the way I have great news. St. Louis own Joe Scott, CPD, FASPE, LEED AP and Vice Presi-dent at Cannon Design will be on hand in December with a presentation on general green plumbing design. Includedin this presentation will be information on solar water heating and rainwater harvesting. As most of you know Joe has anextensive amount of experience and as a past ASPE Chapter President and ASPE National President understands what isimportant to us as Engineers and Designers, so I am really looking forward to this one. No pressure Joe.

    FUTURE

Future meetings will include presentations from Beacon Medaes on Lab design and changes to NFPA 99 and other re-lated code changes as well as a presentation from a representative from the ICC Codes discussing water efficient design.

Once again if anyone has suggestions for future programs, please contact me or any of our board members.

I look forward to seeing you all at the December meeting.
