Join us for a festive Holiday Event; the second annual San

Xavier District Community and Staff Holiday Party will be held on Satur-day, December 18, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Tohono O’odham Nation Recreation Center.

The event will start at 10:00 a.m. with a welcome from Austin G. Nunez, SXD Chairman followed by a blessing from Joseph “Tony” Burrell, El-derly Department Program Director.

There will be games for the children from 10:30 a.m.– 12:00 p.m. Holi-day snacks will be available beginning at 10:00 a.m. and a buffet lunch-eon will be available from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The menu features Ham, Tamales, Mashed Potatoes, Yams, Mixed Vegetables, Bread, and Desert. Drinks will also be

available.

All guests over the age of 18 who arrive before 2:00 p.m. will be given a ticket for the door prize drawing. At 2:00 p.m. there will be a special ap-pearance and treat for the children in attend-ance. The door prizes will be drawn at 2:30 p.m. and all guests are invited to check to see if they have won at the door prize table.

So we hope to see you there. This event is open to the Community, Council, Council Com-mittees and San Xavier District Staff.

Greeting everyone! The Holiday Seasons are here!

For your safety: Hunting season. Community members please notify the Ranger Department if you are going to be out in the remote desert area hunting, cutting wood, etc. The Communications Officer, on duty, logs information upon calling into the Ranger Department. Safety reasons for notifi-cation are for yourself in case you get lost, your vehicle breaks down, become immobile, and/or any unforeseen circumstances that may occur. A note to the hunters: keep watch of your sur-roundings and the direction in which you discharge your weapon; keep in mind community members and District workers frequent the desert area on a day to day basis. The Ranger Department and others would not want anyone to be stuck in an area of cross-fire nor hit from a stray bullet. Keep safety in mind to prevent acci-dents and be safe.

Please report to the Ranger Department and Tohono Oodham Police Department any suspicious activity of wood cutting, illegal hunting and sale of our natural resources and wildlife. The mission of the Ranger Department is to protect San Xavier District’s natu-ral resources (land, wildlife, and animals) and to assist in protec-tion of the Community.

Child Safety Information: Curfew. We also want the children to be safe on Holiday break as well as at all times! Parents/Guardians please take note of the Tohono O’odham Nation Curfew laws:

A person commits the offense of curfew violation if while he or she is the custodial parent, legal guardian or other per-son having the care, custody, or supervision of a juvenile under the age of eighteen (18) years, the juvenile is on or remains or loiters in, about or upon any place private or public within the Tohono O’odham Nation away from the dwelling house or usual place of abode the juvenile, be-tween the hours of 9:00p.m. and 6:00a.m. the following day.

A custodial parent, legal guardian, or other adult person hav-ing the care, custody or supervision of the juvenile found guilty of curfew violation shall be sentenced to the follow-ing:

For a first offence, a $50.00 fine and counseling for the custodial parent, legal guardian, or other adult per-son having care, custody or supervision of the juve-nile and the juvenile involved as directed by the Court in its discretion.

The fine/penalties escalate for second and third offense and so on. The Tohono O’odham Nation Laws were set forth to protect us and our children. Please let us take care of each other. Have a safe and fun Saint Frances Xavier Feast and Joyous Holi-day Season.

2011 MONITOR TRAINING

The Natural Resources Department announces the Bi-Annual Monitor Training to be held on January 25 & 26, 2011 at the San Xavier District Center, 2018 W. San Xavier Road. Monitor certi-

fication is valid for 2 years.

The District Monitor Guidelines apply to all outside organiza-tions/agencies/ persons conducting business on the San Xavier

Indian Reservation.

Look out for more information in the January Wa:k Newsletter which will include when we will begin accepting call-ins to re-

serve a spot.

Puppy Love Pet Medical Transport

For a fee, I will provide transportation service for your pet from San

Xavier to the Veterinarian Program in Sells.

Veterinarian and transportation services are available on Fridays

Only. A veterinarian technician is available Monday thru Thursday in

Sells. The technician provides vaccinations, medications for your

pet, and other minor medical attention. You can call 520/383-2298 to

reach the technician.

If you plan to utilize pet transport services, please:

Do not give your pet food or water after midnight the day before

transport.

Please have your pet ready on the day of transport.

f your pet is unusually hyper or aggressive, it would be best if you

take him/her on your own. This type of behavior greatly increases

the risk of your pet running away or hurting themselves and others.

t is very important that someone be home when your pet returns.

If your pet is given medications, please give meds until it’s all gone.

AUTHORITY SCHOLARSHIPS‖

Those students who have been awarded scholarships last semester

and are planning to continue do not have to fill out another applica-

tion. We will only need the following documents from you:

1. A short, typed letter from you explaining your progress aca-

demically and your future plans and whether or not they have

changed, how close you are to reaching your goal, struggles

and/or positive happenings during your educational efforts.

2. An official, school generated grade sheet or progress report.

3. An itemized list of your financial needs, including a school gen-

erated document stating the cost of the next semesters’ tuition

and fees such as your registration form and a statement from

the bookstore listing the cost of books and supplies.

All requests should be made by students themselves. Please keep

us informed of any phone numbers or addresses that have changed.

The San Xavier Development Authority is pleased to offer schol-arships to persons who are looking to further their education

beyond high school.

To qualify for the scholarship, you must be a

Tohono O’odham tribal member and a registered member of the San Xavier District.

To apply, visit our office at 7765 S. Comobabi Street, in the Hi:kdañ Business Park, to pick up and complete an application. Applications are also available at the San Xavier District Educa-tion Center, but will need to be delivered to the Comobabi Street office. You will need to submit the following: 1) tribal enrollment card or certificate; 2) registration or acceptance letter from the college; 3) class schedule (which should show the amount due for tuition) and 4) an estimate from the bookstore for the amount needed to purchase the required books. You will be expected to submit an essay stating your goals, achievements, need for the scholarship. Typed/computer generated essays only. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT ORIGINAL COPIES OF ANY DOCUMENTS OR IDENTIFICATION CARDS. THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPT-

ED.

The scholarship committee will meet 3 times a year to review and award/deny scholarships for the Fall/Spring/Summer se-

mesters which includes

non-traditional colleges. You will be eligible for continual funding for the duration of your educational program as long as you maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, show continual progression, submit the requested documentation to our office in a timely manner. The next due date for applications is Wednesday, January 5, 2011, 12:00 p.m. No exceptions! Committee will be meeting during the same week so we can mail awards in time for the beginning of school.

Recruiting membership to the San Xavier District Council Recommending Committees and Legislative Representative

The San Xavier District Council is currently recruiting for enrolled and/or community members of the San Xavier District to fill in the vacant positions for four year terms to the following committees and Legislative alternate:

Natural Resources Committee – (1) vacant (2) vacant terms up

Finance Committee – (1) vacant, (1) vacant term up

Personnel & Policy Committee – (1) vacant term up

Legislative Council Alternate to Felicia Nunez term ending May 2011.

The Committees are a recommending Committee under the District Council umbrella that and deal with all issues that are related to the said Committees. All Committees are a (5) membership and all meetings are held twice a month as scheduled on the dates, time and location. Each committee mem-ber is entitled to receive a incentive payment of $75.00 per meeting if they are in attendance.

All interested individuals must submit a letter of interest to the Council department and you will be scheduled for appointment by Council resolution at their next upcoming meetings, and you may contact Ernie Reyes, Council Secretary at (520) 573-4026 for any information.

Hello everyone ,

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves with family and

friends for Thanksgiving.

I hope all the student are studying hard! It is almost the

end of the first semester, I know some of the students are

falling behind in their school work, remember Education

Staff is always here to help you out, so take this opportuni-

ty before its to late, we are here for you, the computers are

also available. I encourage parents to get involved with

your children’s education so you will know what is going

an in their school. Come to the parent meetings that we

have with the Santa Clara School Staff, or even volunteer

at your child’s school.

Desert View Students High School Juniors: JTED

and Pima College are partnering to offer five classes

beginning next semester, the programs are: Automo-

tive, Aviation Technology, Building Construction,

Electrical Power Distribution Technologies, Hotel and

Restaurant Management and Pharmacy Technology.

Hello again everyone! I Hope that everyone enjoyed

their Turkey Day, Family and Friends. With Christ-

mas and the other feast days coming up. I wish you

and your family a Joyful Holliday Season!

Standing Strong Boys are doing great! We are still

full with 15 boys and for the months of September

and October, 10 of them had near perfect attendance

only missing 1 day in the 2 month period. As a re-

ward and incentive, we took them to the U of A vs.

USC Trojans football game. They all enjoyed them-

selves and we are hoping that their great attendance

and participation stays up. Also, we had our Thanks-

giving family night which was a great success.

As for Standing Strong Girls, we are now up to 8 par-

ticipants, which is great! These girls are all very ac-

tive and enjoy coming to the program thus far. There

are still 7 slots available to the girls ages 11-17. Ap-

plications are available at the front desk of the Edu-

cation Department, we look forward to any new com-

ers. For any other questions regarding Standing

Strong, please contact Kim Ortega or Tina Rodriguez

at 520-807-8620.

Also, the After School Program is continuing to run

smoothly, we have 12 students enrolled in the K-1st

grade class. These kids make my day, they each

have a different story to tell on a daily basis and it

makes our time together very fun and interesting. In

November we made turkeys and family trees along

with completing all homework tasks. These students

are very bright and I hope to see them continue to

have the love for school in their years to come.

Its winter time and the weather around us is getting

harsh. Parents, please make sure that you have a

screen around your fire place, also unplug Christmas

tree lights before going to sleep.

Greetings from the Library and wishing you all the most of

this Holiday Season.

We have been extremely busy here in the library. We

have done some renovations and have rearranged the

library.

I would like to introduce our Learning Center Aide, Joshua

Eleando. He will be assisting me here in the library. He

has already been very helpful with the library and the kids.

Hello! my name is Joshua Eleando, I am from Gu-Achi

District, son of Darlene Lopez and the youngest of four

older siblings. I am a recent high school graduate, ―class

of 2009‖ from Ha:san Preparatory & Leadership School. I

am currently enrolled at ITT-TECH studying for my Asso-

ciates Degree in the Drafting and Design Program. Upon

accepting my new position as Learning Center Aide, I will

have the opportunity to serve the Wa:k community both

young and old at heart. It gives me great pride to be an

employee of the San Xavier District., I look forward to

meeting all of you and helping you when you come to the

Learning Center .

The library continues to hold basic computer classes on

Tuesdays at 10:00 am. Please feel free to come in and

learn what you would like to learn. We can set you up for

an e-mail address, we can get a resume going for you, we

can teach you how to use the programs that we currently

have on the computer. We can even teach you how to

type.

I would like to thank the 4th and 5th graders for helping us

reshape the library the students worked hard on emptying

shelves cleaning the shelves, sorting our the books, and

categorizing them, special thanks to De Ana Antone, Bri-

anna Rodriguez, Reuben Reyna, Brenton White, Bowden

White, Shania Encinas, Aiyana Ortega, and Ryan Lopez.

Information

Northwest Native American Basket Weavers As-

sociation, I had the privilege to attend my first

(NNABA) Conference in October.

It was great to see so many Native Americans

weaving together. They shared their techniques,

showed us the different types of materials and

different ways to weave baskets, hats, dolls and

belts, and of course we shared a lot of food and

laughter. I was pleased to see the youth in-

volved, helping the elders, and the elders teach-

ing the youth to weave.

After this conference, I will never look at a bas-

ket the same way again because, I know now

how much time, work and pride that is put into

each basket being made.

Here are some comments from the students that

attend the Basket Conference:

It was an experience I will treasure and re-

member. I want to say thank you to my

teacher for teaching me and being so helpful

I want to express my appreciation for the trip

to Warm Springs, Oregon, for the NNABA

Conference. We were warmly greeted by the

basket weavers there, as we were the weav-

ers from the southwest and received ap-

plause and cheers for it, which made me feel

very welcomed. It was very exciting and edu-

cational to learn how basket weaving is done

by the tribes up there. To see how they use

their materials like cedar, bear grass, yarn

and other materials to make their baskets.

Everyone was very friendly, they were inter-

ested in our basket weaving and some were

surprised by the materials that we use. They

make hats, head bands, vests, mats, animal

The land scape and scenery was beautiful as

we drove through Oregon with all the tall

Pine trees. The forest we drove through went

on for miles. I expected a deer or bear to

jump out of the trees. There were many riv-

ers and lakes with lots of fish. We were treat-

ed to a traditional meal in one of their long

houses. Salmon with corn, potatoes ,salads,

pies and huckleberries. It is a tradition for

them to have a drink of water before and af-

ter they eat along with prayer. Even though

they have lots of water we were told to have

respect for our water, especially in our land

where there is hardly any. I appreciate Cla-

rinda for arranging this trip. I never dreamed

of a trip like this, I am thankful to Clarinda for

an educational trip.

Attending the Northwest Native American

Basket Weavers Association Conference,

held in Portland OR was a great experience,

along with the other basket weavers from the

Basket and Language class we attended the

conference to promote and acknowledge our

Tohono O'odham basketry. To know that oth-

er cultures are also trying to keep the tradi-

tion alive is encouraging, as well as, promis-

ing that Native American basketry will contin-

ue. It was not only informative it was also

good to see some of the basket weavers,

that we met at the last NNABA Conference, it

seems we all enjoy and share a common

bond through our basketry regardless of our

location as Native People. I also thank all the

people who contributed to our fundraising,

also all the Tohono O'odham

Basket weavers, who encour-

age us to keep this art and tra-

dition alive.

Note to Parents

Did you know? It is unlawful for any child who is between six

and sixteen years of age to fail to attend school during the

hours school is in session. In other words, students must be

attending school unless the parent makes alternative ar-

rangements for the child’s education.

School Resource Officer

The Education Department welcomes Officer Brown of the

Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department in his part time

role of School Resource Officer for the San Xavier communi-

ty; he spends time visiting the local school campuses and

makes home visits as needed. Officer Brown also works in

cooperation with all the local schools; and makes referrals to

various programs/agenices to meet the needs of our students

and families. Join us in welcoming Officer Brown to our stu-

dent support system.

Choo Chool Soul

Thanks to a new partnership between SXD Education De-

partment and UA Presents, a large group of Wa:k students

enjoyed a fabulous performance titled “Choo Choo Soul” at

Centennial Hall on the UA campus, October 17. Many of our

students in K-5th grades joined the pre-show fun of the Chil-

dren’s Festival. They made crowns, collected bookmarks,

had their faces painted, were handed free Eegee’s and more

while listening to live music in front of Centennial Hall. When

the Choo Choo Soul started everyone was on their feet,

dancing in the aisle, clapping their hands and totally enjoying

the show. It was obvious the parents and grandparents who

accompanied the children also had a great time. We are very

thankful to Ms. Sarah Kristin Smith and UA Presents for join-

ing our education partnership for the students of San Xavier.

The next event - a performance by the Paul Taylor Dance

Group on November 20, 2010. These performances are a

wonderful opportunity for us to introduce the students to the

performing arts, encourage their creativity, and bring students

to the UA campus. Our students include musicians, singers,

dancers, and writers so anything we can do to support their

efforts is a step toward making dreams come true. Thanks

UA Presents.

SUSD 5th Graders to Receive Laptops

If you are the parent of a SUSD 5th grader, they should be

receiving a SUSD issued laptop computer in January 2011. If

your home does not have internet access, the students can

connect to wireless internet at the SXD Education center.

We are cooperating with SUSD to host a parent orientation

on this SUSD laptop program at the Education Center, with

the training to be conducted by SUSD staff. Keep an eye out

for announcements from the schools.

Holiday Safety Tips:

Christmas and the holidays are an exciting and busy

time but with all the joys of the holiday season come

potential safety hazards that can cause injury or

even death. Help prevent injuries at Christmas and

during the holiday by following these tips.

Christmas Trees:

Christmas tree safety begins with the selection

and purchase of a fresh tree.

When buying a live pre-cut tree, make sure the

tree is still alive and healthy. A fresh tree is

green, needles are hard to pull from the branch-

es, and when bent between

your fingers, needles do not

break. Pull on the needles. If

the needles come off easily, it

is probably not in great condi-

tion. The trunk should be

sticky and the limbs should be

very flexible. Lift the tree and

bounce the cut end on the ground, if a bunch of

needles come tumbling off, it isn’t a safe tree to

take home.

When you get the Christmas tree home, cut off

the bottom two inches of trunk to expose the

fresh wood. This will create a fresh, raw cut for

the tree to soak in water, allow for better water

absorption, and help to keep your tree from dry-

ing out and becoming a fire hazard. If you don’t

do this, the trunk may not be able to drink in the

water in the Christmas tree stand.

Keeping your thirsty Christmas tree well hydrated

is the best way to prevent a tree fire. Keep the

water in the stand well above the fresh cut bot-

tom of the trunk. There are products also availa-

ble to help you keep your Christmas tree from

getting too thirsty.

When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the

label “Fire Resistant”.

Christmas trees dry out with heat, so place your

tree away from heat sources like the fireplace or

heater vents. The cooler the Christmas tree

stays, the better.

Christmas Lights-Inside and Outside:

Unplug the lights and decorations when you are

not home, or otherwise not in use. Heat + a pine

tree = house fire. The lights could short out and

start a fire. The trees are highly flammable. Turn

off all lights when you go to bed.

Check each set of tree lights

for frayed wires, broken bulbs,

and loose connections. Turn

off lights before you go to bed

or leave the house.

Never run electrical cords un-

der carpets or rugs, over nails, in traffic areas, or

where there is a chance of water.

Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The

tree can become charged with electricity from

faulty lights, and person touching a branch could

be electrocuted.

Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be

sure they have been certified for outdoor use. To

hold lights in place, string them through hooks or

insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull

or tug lights to remove them. Check all tree

lights-even if you’ve just purchased them-before

hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the

bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires,

broken sockets or loose connections.

Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits

with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid po-

tential shocks.

Also, be sure to check all cords and plugs prior to

using them for the year, for wear and tear. Throw

out and replace any that look as thought they are

starting to fray or show bare wires. The smallest

spark can possibly result in a very large disaster.

Make sure all external electrical decorations

are well protected. Keep them away from

moisture, and especially keep them aware

from moisture and sale.

Never overload an electrical receptacle with

extension cords or three-way adapters. If

you need to plug a lot of things into single

receptacle, use power strip.

Don’t pull on an electrical cord to unplug it.

Grasp the plug firmly and pull out straight so

don’t bend the prongs.

Replace any cord or plug that is cracked or dis-

colored or feels hot to the touch when in use. If

the original wire or plug is polarized (one prong is

wider than the other), or if it has a third grounding

prong, replace it with similar equipment.

Call an electrician if your lights flicker and your

appliances run sluggishly, or if you have a fuse

that repeatedly blows or a circuit breaker that

trips often. There are sighs that the system is

overloaded.

Here is a recipe for all to try!!

“Cherry Christmas Coffee Bread”

This tasty and festive coffee bread filled with strips of

cinnamon will become a family holiday favorite. The

bread is drizzled with a powdered sugar icing and

decorated with candied cherries to create a Christ-

mas tree effect. Serve on Christmas morning with a

cup of coffee or juice for the kids. This will become a

recipe that you will want to make every year.

Ingredients:

1 cup milk

1/3 cup water

1 egg

1/3 cup margarine or butter, cut up

4-2/3 cups bread flour

1/3 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

1-1/3 cup dried tart cherries

2/3 cup sugar

2 tablespoons bread flour

1-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions:

1. Add the first 9 ingredients to the bread machine

pan according to manufacturer’s directions. Se-

lect the dough cycle. When cycle is complete,

remove dough from machine. Punch down.

Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Also, if you do

not have a bread machine, you can mix it by

hand and knead the dough then let rest for 10

minutes.

2. Meanwhile, for filling, in a bowl combine the 2/3

cup sugar, 2 tablespoons bread flour, and 1-1/2

teaspoons cinnamon. Then cut in 1/4 cup mar-

garine or butter until crumbly. Set aside.

3. Divide the dough into thirds. On a lightly floured

surface, roll each portion into a 12x6-inch rectan-

gle. Sprinkle the rectangle with one-third of the

filling, then fold in half to make a 12x3-inch rec-

tangle. Cut into twelve 3x1-inch strips. Twist the

strips. Arrange twisted strips on a greased large

baking sheet to form a tree shape. Use 10 strips

for the lower branches, placing cut ends toward

the center, and one strip for the base. Cut re-

maining trip in half; use for top branches.

4. Repeat with remaining dough, forming two more

tree shapes on baking sheets. Cover; let rise in a

warm place about 30 minutes or until nearly dou-

ble.

5. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 12 to 15 minutes

or until golden brown. Remove from baking

sheets; cool on wire racks.

6. In a small bowl stir together powdered sugar and

vanilla. Stir in enough milk (3 to 4 teaspoons) to

make a glaze of drizzling consistency. Drizzle

over breads. Garnish with cherries. Makes 3

loaves (24 servings). (Better Homes & Garden)
