Many of the ladies we are training have a very limited scope of experience. They live in the heart of Africa, yet they have never seen a zebra or a crocodile or a monkey. They have never gone fishing or learned how to swim. One of our trainers received a gift to help cover the costs of a field trip for our ladies to Nsobe Game Camp. all. Funny thing is that the largest fish caught for the day was not more than 7 inches and most of them were 3/4 inches long, but every single one was kept to take back to someone’s family. At one point, a slightly larger fish was thrown up in the grass as it was yanked out of the water. I saw it flopping around and thought it was bleeding. When I commented to that effect, several of the ladies laughed and quickly taught

me that this fish was the best tasting one, it was the red bellied bream :) So, it was a learning day for all of us! After a few hours of fishing I decided I wanted to go swimming. Because of things like bilharzia and restrictions on swimming in the lake, I asked who wanted to go to the nearby pool. Only a few were brave enough to join me, so off we went. The water was a bit murky with lovely things floating on top and bunches of twigs and leaves scattered across the bottom, which I only discovered after getting into the pool, but I hadn’t been swimming since...when? I can’t even remember. So the conditions didn’t deter me a bit. I immediately went into the deeper end while our students cautiously came down the steps into about 3 feet of water making nervous comments with each step. It was hilarious to watch them once they finally found a bit of confidence to be in chest high water. They jumped and splashed and flailed their arms and enthusiastically declared, “look, I am swimming!” Then from the splashing one would get some water in her face and start coughing and get nervous again and go back to the edge. After a bit of this carrying on I asked if some of them would like to learn how to float. A few said yes, so we started the attempts at floating. At this point, fear was so huge in several of their hearts I first took some time to ask them if they trust me, if they trust God, and explain that I love them and

will keep them safe and will not do anything to surprise or endanger them. The first few minutes with each one typically resembled a monkey with arms (the student) and tail wrapped fearfully around a tree (me). We talked through each moment of letting go, one arm at a time and resting on my arms under their back. It was quite a lesson on ‘perfect love casts out fear.’ Eventually each one of them found some measure of calm laying in the water with only one hand under their backs. It was quite an experience for me as well to see the level of fear they experienced being in water, and how reminding them of God’s love and care for them and master design in creating their bodies to be able to float helped to ease that fear and bring some peace. By this time afternoon had overtaken us and those waiting near the fishing

area called us to come eat. We enjoyed a fried chicken and pasta salad lunch with homemade rolls, watermelon and delicious mangoes. One last stop before we hit the road home...the reptile house! Two of our trainers had no problem with handling the snakes... myself, Val and the students on the other hand...were a little more ‘hands off.’ While walking through the snake house and pointing and gaping and wondering at the varieties of colors and shapes and sizes of snakes a few of my students were nervously calling me, ‘teacher Shirley, come look, quick, teacher Karen is touching a really big snake.” So, I finished snapping a picture and went out to find a python draped over Karen’s shoulders. After such an experience and with the sun dropping in the sky, we decided it was time to head back.

The adventure wasn’t

quite over though... after about 20-30 minutes on the road, I thought I saw a young girl in a bunch of people being pulled from one person to the next. I was disturbed by the sight and as I kept driving I started praying for her but couldn’t get past the picture in my mind. I stopped the car a kilometer or two down the road and asked Karen and the three students in the back seat what we could or maybe should do about the situation. They were busy chatting at the time, so they didn’t see it. We decided to pray and turn around and check on the girl. We ended up passing our second vehicle with confused looks on their faces as to why we were headed in the opposite direction. They called us and we explained what we were doing. As we came near where the girl was, she was now walking just a few meters behind only one man with a bicycle and the crowd

was gone. What a relief, maybe I just didn’t see the situation clearly. Two of the students got out just to confirm that the girl of 15/16 was okay and they heard the story that she had indeed been in a crowd of people and three men were pulling at her and telling her that they wanted to sleep with her. As she tried to resist and they attempted to pull her off the roadside into the bush, the man on the bicycle stopped them and after threatening to beat him up, they decided to leave. The young girl, Sylvia, told us she was fine and that she was on her way home and the man with the bike would walk with her. Please pray of Sylvia and so many like her who are victims of such acts in villages in various places in Zambia. This experience not only saddened my heart, but also reminded me why I am doing what I am doing. Young women need to know they are valuable, that they do not need to be treated like this. They need to be taught how to be safe and make wise decisions to help protect themselves in such an environment. They need to know that they were created for a much greater purpose than simply being used for a man’s momentary pleasure. As we train young women to be teachers, they begin to realize the gifting God has placed in their hands and hearts, they know that they are loved and valued and precious and worth more than society deems them worthy of. They learn how to protect themselves, how to make wise decisions about who they associate with and how and when. They rise up from the mindset of ‘this is just something that happens’ to ‘I am a valuable member of my community and a child of God and this is NOT my portion.” It was amazing to see two of my teachers confidently and compassionately reach out to and encourage this young Sylvia. The beautiful thing is knowing that soon they will be in schools helping to shape and form the lives of other young girls and ladies. Bringing education and the ability to read and write, yes, but bringing so much more...bringing hope, bringing joy, bringing the reality that they are loved and cared for by a loving, Heavenly Father who created them with value and purpose. Who would have thought that a day of fishing and swimming would end with a renewed heart to continue serving so young people in Zambia can come to know their purpose? I certainly didn’t, but I’m so glad that it did! ~ Serving with Joy, Shirley Ann Turner
