Kohler fifth grader McKenna

Holzrichter is seeking donated

books for a book drive she plans

to hold at Kohler Schools from

Thursday, December 10 through

Friday, January 8.

McKenna was cleaning out the

family playroom of old books and

toys after requesting new books

for Christmas, when she asked if

the used books could be donated

to kids who don’t have a lot.

McKenna’s mother, Molly, used

to volunteer in the Books for Kids

division of the Next Door Foun-

dation, so she recommended do-

nating the books to that

organization. After a few minutes

McKenna said, “I bet there are a

lot of kids who have books that

they have outgrown. What if we

collect them all and donate

them?” Molly told her that was

called a book drive and said if she

wanted to do one, she would help

her. So, the “Out with the old,

make room for the new” book

drive was born!

Will-Pemco in Sheboygan do-

nated all of the boxes and print-

ing, and Rita Gast from

Shorewest Realtors (McKenna’s

“Nana”) is sponsoring a pizza

party for the class that collects the

most books. A box will also be lo-

cated in the library for any com-

munity members who would like

to donate.

Books needed include baby

board books, children’s picture

books, children’s fiction and non-

fiction, juvenile literature, chil-

dren’s dictionaries and

cookbooks, children’s books with

universal themes (friendship, an-

imals, science, etc.), parenting

books, and multicultural chil-

dren’s books.

Books that cannot be accepted

are: textbooks of any kind; with-

drawn or discarded library books;

old books with mildew, torn

pages, handwriting, or highlight-

ing; magazines; encyclopedias or

other reference books, adult

books.

The winner of the pizza party

will be calculated by dividing the

total number of qualifying books

a room donates by the number of

students in the room

The Holzrichters would like to

thank Will-Pemco for donating

the boxes and fliers and Rita Gast

at Shorewest Realtors for donat-

ing the pizza party!

Happy Holidays from everyone at Village Realty!

We hope your holidays will be filled with joy and laughter through the New Year!

Finance Committee takes uprental property complaints

At their December 7 meeting,

the Village Board’s Finance Com-

mittee discussed nuisance com-

plaints from Village residents

regarding rental properties. One

rental home in particular was al-

leged to have drug activities tak-

ing place, with visitors coming

and going – in some cases squeal-

ing their tires and speeding. Some

residents called for a nuisance

abatement ordinance to be en-

acted, as well as creation of a data-

base of all rental properties located

in the Village that would be up-

dated annually, and require land-

lords to subject their rental

property to interior and exterior

inspections every two years, or as

needed.

Village Attorney Mike

Bauer notified the com-

mittee of a bill being fast-

tracked by state

Republicans and interest

groups that would prohibit a

municipality from requiring

landlords to register with the

city, and from establishing

apartment inspection programs.

Inspections could only be con-

ducted in response to tenant com-

plaints. Assembly Bill 568 also

restricts municipalities from inact-

ing or enforcing ordinances that

prohibit homeowners from renting

out their homes. The bill would,

however, allow a landlord to evict

a tenant for committing certain

criminal activities on the premises,

regardless of whether an arrest

or conviction has been made.

Kohler Police Chief William

Rutten said he would meet with

Attorney Bauer to rough out

language for a potential ordi-

nance that the committee could

work off of, that would give the

police department more tools to

help them address problem prop-

erties.

Rutten also urged residents to

call the police at the time that they

see suspicious activities taking

place, rather than waiting to dis-

cuss it with them casually when

it’s too late for police to respond

as a complaint.

The John Michael Kohler

Arts Center has presented an

offer to purchase a section of

the Schuchardt Farm Property

on Indiana Avenue from the

City of Sheboygan for the de-

velopment of the world’s first

facility dedicated to the study

of art environments and their

preservation, conservation

and presentation. The project,

known as the Art Preserve,

will complement the Arts

Center’s New York Avenue

location in downtown She-

boygan, WI.

Approximately 39 acres are

included in the $1,170,000

deal. The Arts Center has

agreed to make a payment in

lieu of taxes as well. Ground-

breaking on the multimillion-

dollar project is expected in

the summer of 2017 with

completion targeted for the

summer of 2020.

“The Schuchardt Farm

Property is a perfect setting

for the Art Preserve,” said

Sandra Sachse, president of

the John Michael Kohler Arts

Center Board of Directors. “It

offers easy access from major

thoroughfares and

connectivity with the ArtsCenter’s downtown Sheboy-

gan location and existing cul-

tural assets. The semirural

quality is similar to the origi-

nal locations of most of the art

environments in our collec-

tion.”

The John Michael Kohler

Arts Center is known world-

wide for its collection and

presentation of art environ-

ments. This unique field of

art-making involves an indi-

vidual significantly transform-

ing his/her personal

surroundings—for example,

his/her home or yard—into an

exceptional, multifaceted

work of art.

John Michael Kohler Arts

Center Director Ruth DeY-

oung Kohler and Kohler

Foundation, Inc. have long

been known as the world’s

major preservationists of

complete artist environments

as well as for bringing to-

gether smaller components of

this art form.

“The Arts Center’s unparal-

leled collection of works by

art-environment builders is

experiencing ever- increasing

requests for access from

scholars, curators, and the

public,” said Karen Patterson,

John Michael Kohler Arts

Center associate curator. “We

already have two environ-

ments that cannot be shown

until we have permanent out-

door space for them, and we

don’t want to decline future

opportunities to grow because

of the lack of space.”

The Art Preserve will utilize

the property’s unique natural

qualities for the installation of

art environments in harmony

with land conservancy initia-

tives related to the area. The

new facility will serve as the

major indoor/outdoor mu-

seum of whole environments

as well as of smaller compo-

nents of this magnificent art

form.

“Development of this prop-

erty into a world renowned,

first-of-its-kind Art Preserve

will be a key year-round

tourism and economic devel-

opment asset for the city and

the state. This project has been

in the works for a number of

years, and it is exciting to see

it come to fruition,” stated

Chad Pelishek, planning and

development director for the

City of Sheboygan.

The James Tellen Woodland

Sculpture Garden, one of the

environments in the Arts Cen-

ter collection that has been

preserved in situ, is open for

viewing year-round at its orig-

inal location at 5634 Ever-

green Drive in the Town of

Wilson, south of Sheboygan.

“The Arts Center has al-

ways believed that the art en-

vironments we preserve

should remain in situ like the

Tellen sculpture garden, but

that is not always possible,”

said Ed McKelvey, chair of

the Art Center’s Art Preserve

Committee. “Our solution is

the Art Preserve, which will

serve as a haven for art envi-

ronments that no longer have

a home.”

Admission to the John

Michael Kohler Arts Center,

608 New York Ave. in down-

town Sheboygan, is by volun-

tary donation. Go to

jmkac.org for additional infor-

mation and to plan a visit.
