    Opening Hymn

    Once in Royal David’s City

SoloOnce in royal David’s cityStood a lowly cattleshed,Where a mother laid her babyIn a manger for his bed:Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little child.

ChoirHe came down to earth from heavenWho is God and Lord of all,And his shelter was a stable,And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly,Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

For he is our childhood’s pattern,Day by day like us he grew,He was little, weak, and helpless,Tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feeleth for our sadness,And he shareth in our gladness.

AllAnd our eyes at last shall see him,Through his own redeeming love. For that child so dear and gentleIs our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children onTo the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable,With the oxen standing by,We shall see him; but in heaven,Set at God’s right hand on high; When like stars his children crownedAll in white shall wait around.

Bidding Prayer officiant: Beloved in Christ, in this season of Advent, let it be our care and

delight to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, to see the Babe lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by his holy Child; and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise.

But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church for which he died, and especially in this country and within this city.

And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love.

Lastly, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.

These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself has taught us:

all: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory For ever and ever, Amen.

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;Come and behold him, born the King of Angels:

Refrain:O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

MenLo! star led chieftains, Magi, Christ adoring,Offer him incense, gold, and myrrh; We to the Christ Child bring our hearts’ oblations.

WomenChild, for us sinners poor and in the manger,Fain we embrace thee, with awe and love;Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly?

FIRST LESSONReading reader: A reading from the book of Genesis.

    Genesis 3:8-17

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go,and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between

you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.

17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;and you shall eat the plants of the field.19 By the sweat of your faceyou shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

The tree of life my soul hath seen,Laden with fruit, and always green:The trees of nature fruitless be,Compared with Christ the apple tree.

His beauty doth all things excel:By faith I know, but ne'er can tellThe glory which I now can seeIn Jesus Christ the apple tree.

For happiness I long have sought,And pleasure dearly I have bought:I missed of all; but now I see'Tis found in Christ the apple tree.

I'm weary with my former toil,Here I will sit and rest awhile:Under the shadow I will be,Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.

    Isaiah 9:2-7

2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.3You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy;they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.5For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.6For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be calledWonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold itwith justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Reading reader: A reading from the Gospel of Luke.

    Luke 1:26–38

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

    John 1:1–14

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.9 The true light, which gives

light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
