Professionally done nailart sends a

positive message

Hair makeovers transform the way a personprojects to others

BY BARRY GERDING

Nails designs have many advantages, one being if you design your nails correctly, people will see you as a responsible person who knows how to take care of herself.

Impressive nail art sends a message you are a person who values smartness and decency.

That is philosophy that Angelina's Hair & Nails in the Mission Park Shopping Centre wants to pass on to all the customers.

Vuon Tran, who operates Angelina's with his wife with salons in Kelowna and West Kelowna

(108-2127 Louie Dr.), started the business on the Westside ve years ago, and opened the second outlet in the Mission in 2011.

Tran says his wife heads up the nail treatment as a trained esthetician, while his specialty is in hair styling.

The couple immigrated to Canada from Vietnam over 18 years ago, settling rst in Vancouver where they operated their own salon until deciding to move to the Okanagan.

"The last time we went back to Vietnam was now 11 years ago, so we are very happy to be in Canada," Tran said.

Regina and Los Angeles are a long way from the Okanagan, but that is the route that hair stylist LaDonna MacAuley has travelled to arrive in Kelowna 11 years ago.

Now she has recently joined the California Dreams hair salon in the Mission Park Shopping Centre to continue pursuing her love for hair makeovers that make her clients feel like they have been given a new lease on life.

"To be able to transform how a person feels about themselves and how they project to others by giving them a makeover is a very rewarding feeling," MacAuley said.

MacAuley originally started learning her craft as a teenager cutting hair, then became a licensed hair stylist after graduating high school and eventually opened her own salon.

She was attracted to L.A. through her gospel missionary work connections, which led her to do hair styling both for gospel music recording artists and for youth at risk.

While she was continually going back and forth between the two countries, MacAuley said she eventually settled in the Okanagan for health reasons and to be closer to her three children.

"It's a big difference in the

lifestyle pace between L.A. and Kelowna," she said.

Joining MacAuley as a new addition at California Dreams, which is owned by Sandi Taylor, is hair stylist Kevin Davis, who brings his expertise in colour and chemical application to the salon.

Davis said he particularly enjoys doing hair updos, something he says many women don't think about asking for unless for special occasions such as weddings or a special event.

"Updos can generally be done within 20 to 25 minutes using little more than special hair sprays and hair braiding techniques. There are the updo classics such as the French Roll and the Beehive but there is also newer design stuff being done today that has that kind of messy hair look which are really cool," Davis said.

Davis also has become involved in the Red Dot Players, a theatre student group at Okanagan College, through a friend, volunteering his time to help with their hair dressing needs for stage shows.

"I'm doing that again this year but I'm actually in the play this time as well," he said.

To book an appointment with anyone on the California Dreams hair styling team, call 250-762-8256.

The Westland Insurance Group began operating from a single of ce in 1980 out of the Lower Mainland community of Ladner on the idea of offering excellent customer service and high quality insurance products at a competitive price.

Today, Westland has 60 of ce branches across B.C. and in Calgary, with one of those located at the Mission Park Shopping Centre.

The genesis of the Mission location actually started with the opening of the Prospera Credit Union branch at the shopping centre in July 2003, which offered an insurance service as part of its bank branch.

That service was purchased by Westland in 2011 and moved from the bank branch to its present of ce location next to the provincial liquor store.

"Our business has doubled since we moved into our present location," said Wendy Weller, manager of the Mission Park Shopping Centre branch.

"We were kind of lost in the bank as nobody knew the insurance service was part of the credit union."

Weller said six people work out of the Kelowna location, which joins other branch of ces in the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

All Westland staff are licensed under the Financial Insitution Act, ensuring you get professional advice and support, as Wetland supports ongoing training and professional development initiatives for its staff, operating the rm's own Westland College to train staff in the latest risk management, customer service and product knowledge.

Westland has also developed special insurance programs for commercial, institutional and industrial risks for schools, wineries, churches, private health care facilities, dry cleaners, restaurants and manufacturers.

The ideally-situated TD Canada Trustserves about 17 million customers

around the world.

Canadian banking institution dates back more than

150 years

The TD Canada Trust branch is a

long-time tenant of the Mission Park

Shopping Centre, but the history of the

Canada banking institution dates back

more than 150 years ago.

TD's earliest predecessor, The Bank of

Toronto, was founded in 1865 by a group

of Ontario our millers and grain dealers.

Rooted in Canada's emerging grain

industry at that time, the new bank was

created to provide essential banking,

insurance and commodity exchange

services for its clients.

As the bank's business grew, a three-

person staff began developing a

provincial branch network that took

expansion to beyond Ontario's borders, to

Montreal in 1860.

By the start of the 1920, the bank

had expanded to 161 branches, and that

growth continued into the 1940s and

'50s, resulting in the amalgamation of

the Bank of Toronto with The Dominion

Bank in 1954, creating the iconic "TD"

corporate title that has been

synonymous with Canada's banking

industry ever since.

In the years since, TD merged with

Canada Trust to create its current

corporate identity, a banking rm that

today employs 74,000 people

around the world and serves about

17 million customers.

There are 17 staff that work in the

Mission branch of TD Canada Trust, ideally

located in an area of the city that has

no banking outlet services in the Lower

or Upper Mission areas south of the

shopping centre.

The branch manager is Laura Decker

and the branch's hours of operation are 8

a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, 8

a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 8

a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Hansens Pizza offers unusual,

delicious toppings

Mark Hansen toiled in relative obscurity for years in pursuing his culinary career working as a chef in a variety of restaurants.

But when he decided to opt for a different culinary path, opening his own pizza store in the Mission Park Shopping Centre four years ago, it has turned out to be revelation for him that he never anticipated.

"I wish now that I had done this 20 years ago," Hansen said. "Business has been really positive. We sell more pizzas in a week than the previous owners used to sell in a month. And everywhere I go in this community, people recognize me on the street it seems and says, "Heh, it's the pizza guy. How is it going?

"That has been kind of different because I worked in restaurant kitchens for years and the general public would never know who I was."

Hansen said when he opened Hansen's Classic Pizza he was looking for a change both professionally and in his lifestyle, away from the pressures of managing a restaurant kitchen with a large staff.

There had been two pizza delivery businesses that operated out of

his current location prior to him taking over the space, and he was fortunate that the immediate business predecessor had invested in upgrading the equipment and space prior to closing down.

"It was an advantage for me to walk in here and not have to do a lot of major renovations. Everything was updated and ready to go," he said.

Hansen said only his imagination is a limiting factor to what he includes on his pizza menu of options, as you will notice with some of the topping options such as pickles, artichokes, jalapeño peppers, balsamic caramelized onions, roasted potatoes, chorizo sausage, sockeye salmon and asparagus.

Some of his classic pizzas include The Bulldog, featuring a hot sauce of the same name; Shepperd's Pie Pizza; Fugazetta; Coconut Curry Chicken; and The Quesadilla.

"We have a pretty diverse menu, stuff you probably have never heard of in our life to go on a pizza," he said.

To learn more about what's on Hansen's Classic Pizza menu, check out the website www.kelownapizza.ca or call 250-860-7775.
