And what better way to celebrate the near completion of the Cloverdale Com-munity Kitchen than with a slice of cake?

“May God bless Cloverdale community kitchen,” it read, in icing.

Th e congregation held a soft opening on Dec. 1 but the offi cial opening won’t take place until February, coinciding with the Coldest Night of the Year Campaign in support of the homeless, Alan Cadwell, director of facilities development for Pa-cifi c Community Church, announced in a newsletter to supporters last week.

Th ey’re not yet serving hot meals out of the new kitchen because there are still some fi nishing touches to do, including securing approvals and permits from the City of Surrey, Fraser Health and the Sur-rey Fire Services, Cadwell said.

What started as a ‘Rails to Trails’ campaign is truly about the increase of the transfer of coal

2013CCNABLUE

RIBBON

Catchy slogan, dubious proposal

COMMUNITY CALENDAR

To the editor;Re: “Rail Options Presented,”

Dec. 5Recently Fraser Surrey Docks

submitted on application to Port Metro Vancouver for the devel-opment of a Direct Transfer Coal Facility at the existing terminal located immediately east of the North Delta/Surrey border to handle up to 4 million metric tonnes of coal per year. (A 30-day public comment period on the Environment Impact Assessment ends Dec. 17, 2013.)

It is proposed that the coal be transferred by Burlington North-ern Sante-Fe (BNSF) rail to the terminal and will be loaded di-rectly onto barges at the existing berth.

It will then go off to Texada Is-land where the coal will be trans-ferred to a deep sea vessel for overseas export.

Mayor Dianne Watts and May-or Wayne Baldwin recently pro-posed the ‘Rails to Trails’ cam-paign. It is the relocation of the BNSF track, or as they refer to this, as the ‘re-alignment’ of the BNSF track. Th is new ‘re-align-

ment’ will be equipped to trans-port the 4 million metric tonnes of coal that the ‘applicant’ Fraser Surrey Docks have submitted. It’s not just coal, it’s ‘thermal coal,’ one of the cheapest and dirtiest

coals that there is.Coal dust is a known carcino-

gen which contains heavy met-als such as mercury and arsenic. Coal dust can smother fi eld crops interfering with the light phase

of photosynthesis. Mercury will travel up the food chain to our dinner plates.

Th ere are 12,000 emergency room visits and one billion dol-lars in health care costs associat-ed with coal. Black Lung Disease, chronic bronchitis emphysemaas well as asthma attacks are allbut to name a few of the illnesses.

What has started as a cam-paign ‘Rails to Trails’ is truly about the increase of coal trans-fer. I just hope that by the time we dig out from from under all thiscoal dust,we, the public, will do the right thing: Oppose this ap-plication.

Put pressure on both MayorDianne Watts and Mayor WayneBaldwin, before our lives and our precious environment are put ateven greater risk.

Teens dance for Team CanadaBy Jennifer LangTwo 15-year-old

dancers from Clover-dale are spending the week in Poland where they’re helping rep-resent Canada in an

international competi-tion.

An estimated 4,000 dancers from more than 20 countries are taking part in the World Ballet, Jazz

and Modern Dance Championships, Dec. 10 to 14.

With them will be Caroline MacCaull, a Grade 10 student who attends Langley Fine

Art School, and Lord Tweedsmuir Second-ary’s Mikayla Fetter, also in Grade 10.

MacCaull trains at Fusion Force Dance Studio, while Fet-ter attends Cameron Academy.

Th e pair were strang-ers who became friends during the audition process for Team Canada last summer and have since become friends.

Th e dancers audi-tioned in April and June, and learned in July that they’d been chosen for the national dance team, which is choreographed by Danielle Gardener and Charlene Hart – both were featured on Season two of So You Th ink You Can Dance Canada.

Team Canada Dance is comprised of dancers from various studios across the Lower Main-land, Vancouver Island, and the Okanagan.

Members have been training since August for the world champi-onships.

Getting prepped meant training four to eight hours a week for Team Canada on top of their regular training.

ner,” he said. “At 5 p.m., we had dinner and fi n-ished about 7 p.m., but we did not dare go out-side because it was im-possible to move on the rubble without making a noise so we stayed in the church overnight.”

He enlisted two days aft er Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. His fi ve brothers enlisted as well.

“With all six sons in service, I can well imag-ine the anxious mo-ments my parents had during the war years, especially on the receipt of telegrams advising them that George had been killed in action and both Alec and I had been wounded,” said Fairweather, who lives in West Vancouver.

For eight days in De-cember of 1943, Cana-dian troops with the Seaforth Highlanders regiment from Van-couver were locked in a bloody house-to-house battle to claim the Ital-ian town of Ortona from hardened German para-troops ordered by Hitler to hold it at all costs.

Winning the town would give the Allies an important new port on Italy’s eastern Adriatic coast, shortening supply lines in the Italian cam-paign.

But it was also a death trap, riddled with mines and snipers. Allied tanks and troops were vulner-able if they moved in the narrow streets.

So Canadians ad-vanced roof by roof, or by “mouse-holing” through the walls into adjacent buildings and clearing the enemy out.

Nearly 1,400 Cana-dian soldiers died in the ruins of Ortona, dubbed Little Stalingrad, before the Germans were rout-ed on Dec. 28.

At the peak of battle on Christmas Day, offi -cers organized a memo-rable dinner to cheer the troops. Th e offi cers scrounged table linens, china dishes, beer, wine, roast pork, applesauce, caulifl ower, mashed po-tatoes, and gravy.

Special provisions in-cluded a bottle of beer each, cigarettes, candies and chocolate. (Th e beer and smokes are substi-

A feast at the peak of battle on Christmas day 1943From page 7

tuted with root beer and candy cigarettes for the cadets.)

An organist played Si-lent Night while the men ate in shift s before re-turning to battle; they’d take control of Ortona two days later, but at a great cost – the lives of hundreds of men.

On the 70th anniversa-

ry of the battle, cadets of 2812 Surrey, 2277 Lang-ley, 1867 Delta, 2893 Port Coquitlam, 72nd Van-couver and 2963 Sechelt Corps were joined by offi cers, parents, and a documentary fi lmmaker. Cadets, dressed in their combat uniforms, were served by their offi cers in a solemn ritual steeped in Canadian military tra-dition, paying tribute to

those who made the ulti-mate sacrifi ce during the Second World War.

Volunteers from the Canadian Military Edu-cation Centre wore vin-tage Second World War uniforms and lent arti-facts from their personal collections for decoration and education, creating an added sense of realism to the evening.

Tim Morris, chaplain

at Pacifi c Regional Insti-tution, played the part of Major Roy Durnford, an Anglican military pa-dre who prayed with the men.

In preparing for Sun-day’s anniversary din-ner, organizers paid meticulous attention to detail, from securing an organist to erecting faux stained glass windows and stone church walls.

A table set off on its own was reserved to honour fallen comrades-in-arms to remind those present of their sacri-fi ce, said Karen Murphy Corr, of the 2277 Langley Corps sponsoring com-mittee.

Normally parents do the cooking for the Or-tona dinner, observed by the cadets since 2001, but with all six corps under one roof, they turned to the pros: culinary experts Amanda Smith, chef, Mark Ross, head chef, and Drew Hill, sous-chef.

“Th ey are pulling out all the stops,” Murphy Corr said.

Surrey’s Raven Whit-ford of the 2277 Corps

was excited to attend the dinner and learn more. “I’ve always been inter-ested in history and it sounded really cool to me,” the Grade 7 student said.

“I think it is important to remember who fought for us and gave us a free country.”

Jocelyn DeLorme said her grandfather, Pte. Jack DeLorme of the Loyal Edmonton Regi-ment, was tucking into his Christmas dinner in a nearby ruined house when when they came under attack. DeLo-rme was knocked uncon-scious.

“He woke to a severed foot lying in the middle

of his precious Christmas dinner,” she said.

Another guest of honour was her grand-mother, Fleetwood resi-dent Dorothy DeLorme, widow of Private DeLor-me. She has attended the dinner every year since2001 and is consideredthe mother of the Sea-forth Highlanders Bat-talion.

“I am very happy to be here tonight and very honoured. I have seen many of you start as 12 and 13-year-olds,” she said.

“It has been a joy to seehow each one of you hasgrown into such beau-tiful young men and women.”
