W H Y Y O U S H O U L D A T T E N DCosmetic science is a fascinating intersection of the disciplines of chemistry, physics, biol-ogy, physiology, and psychology. By integrating these fundamental areas, cosmetic science is able to advance our basic understanding of personal health and beauty. The application of cosmetic science continually drives innovation across a wide range of markets and product categories. Proudly, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, the oldest and largest non-profit organization serving the cosmetic and personal care community, has been at the forefront of cosmetic science since 1945.

This year, we’re delighted to convene the 71st Annual Scientific Meeting & Technology Show-case, the premier international forum presenting the latest in cosmetic science. Featuring more than 120 podium and poster presentations within 10+ topic areas, two full days promise some-thing for everyone. Whether you are an early careerist, industry veteran, professor or graduate student, this year’s reimagined meeting provides both an Advanced Track and a Basic/NextGen Track — from the fundamental basics to the most advanced innovations shaping the industry. These concurrent tracks will feature thought-leaders from across the industry and beyond.

In addition to the two days of technical sessions, the Annual Meeting features two import-ant Continuing Education events (The Safety Assessment as Tool for Global Compliance of Cosmetic Products and their Ingredients and Claim Substantiation For Cosmetic Products), a variety of networking events, and the Technology Showcase which will shine a light on the latest technologies moving the industry forward. The Annual Meeting provides ample opportu-nities for attendees to learn, reconnect with colleagues, engage with new business contacts, and build bridges across the vast intersection of cosmetic science. Over 1,000 professionals from 12 countries attend the Annual Meeting, representing the industry’s most prestigious corporate, government, and academic institutions.

W H A T Y O U W I L L L E A R NSome highlights of what you can expect to learn this year include: utilizing microbiome and population data for skin health, applying genetics to beauty in skincare, the mind/body con-nection and cosmetics, virtual reality in cosmetics, the latest in sun care (via a roundtable discussion), extraction from sustainable sources and application in cosmetics, measuring hair damage and strategies to deliver healthy hair, and much more.

Dr. Fuchs is renowned for her research in skin biology, stem cells and associated genetic disorders, including cancers. She received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Princeton. After postdoctoral research at MIT, she joined the faculty at University of Chicago. In 2002, she relocated to Rockefeller University, where she is the Rebecca C. Lancefield professor of Mammalian Cell Biology and Development. She has been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1988. Dr. Fuchs’ awards and honors include the Richard Lounsbery Award from the National Academy of Sciences, National Medal of Science, L’Oréal-UNESCO Award, Albany Prize in Medicine, March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology, Pasarow Award in Cancer, Pezcoller Award in Cancer Research, EB Wilson Award, and in 2017 received the Vanderbilt Prize. Dr. Fuchs is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine), American Philosophical Society and European Molecular Biology Organization (foreign member). She holds honorary doctorates from NYU School of Medicine, University of Illinois, Albany Medical College and Harvard University. She is past-President of American Society for Cell Biology, The International Society for Stem Cell Research and the Harvey Society, and serves on the NYAS Board of Governors and NAM/IOM Council. She’s trained >25 graduate students and 100 postdocs, most now at prestigious academic universities and medical schools. Her lecture will focus on her latest work in the field of skin stem cells, how these tissue stem cells replenish dying cells within the skin, how they become mobilized to repair wounds, and how they acquire mutations that will ultimately lead to skin cancers.

THE SAFETY ASSESSMENT AS TOOL FOR GLOBAL COMPLIANCE OF COSMETIC PRODUCTS AND THEIR INGREDIENTS Moderator: Steven L. Hanft. Speakers: Karl Popp, R.Ph., Craig R. Weiss, Dr. Uwe Rossow and Dr. Annelie Struessmann

This workshop will provide attendees with knowledge on the current industry regulations by delivering the following information through presentations and panel discussions: 1) Requirements for a cosmet-ic ingredient and cosmetic product safety assessment 2) Necessary data to support the safety of the ingredients and the product 3) Hazard characterization and exposure assessment 4) Establishing a cosmetic product safety report as legal document for proof of liability and for global market access

CLAIM SUBSTANTIATION FOR COSMETIC PRODUCTSSpeaker: Dr. Nava Dayan, LLC

The FDA and the FTC are carefully watching cosmetic products for non-substantiated misleading claims. If the claim is indeed mislead-ing the consumer and drives to a purchase of a product that will not deliver its premise-this is an ethical matter. With the skin care indus-try striving to produce safer products, it should also further stream its scientific resources towards testing products for their activity on the skin and provide fair translation into claims. Common criteria for justification of claims are a challenging aspect in product development since it needs to be customized for the purpose of use and nature of the product developed. This course is tailored to provide key aspects in the establishment of best practice to be applied in experimental design and tie it into the regulatory framework rationale. It will focus on recent developments in skin biomarkers research and skin micro-biome as well as human clinical studies.
