Dear life-giving parishioners, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is inviting you to come and learn more about an exciting new initiative to help end glob-al poverty. As you may know, CRS is the official international humani-tarian relief and development agency of the U.S. Catholic community, providing life-saving aid to more than 100 coun-tries. To support this work, CRS is committed to forming and supporting CRS Chapters. These CRS Chapters na-tionwide are comprised of parishioners, students and fami-lies who work together to advance CRS's lifesaving mission of ending global poverty and suffering through meaningful action. St. Mel Parish has been invited to form a CRS Chapter (or ministry) as part of the this national effort for global justice. Please join us on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in St. Patrick Hall (the Auditorium) for a Chapter Launch Workshop with Sergio Lopez, who will explain what forming a CRS Chapter will look like and provide a snapshot of the exciting opportunities that will be provided to each Chapter.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

Please be generous in this week’s special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment. In the United States, one in six people live in poverty. Through this collection you support pro-grams that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for people across the country who struggle. In addition 25% of the funds we collect will remain in our diocese to fund local antipoverty projects. Please prayerfully consid-

er how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More infor-mation about CCHD can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

H oliday. You’ll read that word a lot in the next several weeks. We know what the term means to many nowadays: time off from work, vacation, a chance to get last minute shopping done, parties, lots of food.

But what did it originally mean? Halig (Holy) daeg (day) was a Middle English word, first used in the 12th century. It marked special days set aside by the Church. General work was suspended in order to frame, consider, and celebrate “holiness”. Holy days help us understand what holiness really is — embodied and captured in Jesus, Mary, and the Saints — and how we too can become holy. Every Sunday is considered a Holy Day, but otherwise there are only six Holy Days of Obli-gation recognized by dioceses in the United States. On these days the faithful are called to go to Church. But if it’s just about Church attendance, we’re missing the point! Do you see signs of holiness in yourself, and those around you? My guess is that you’d know it if you saw it, or experienced it, even though you might not call it “holiness.” It’s found in love, and gentleness, and good-ness, and sacrifice, and faith, and joyful humility. I’ve been blessed with many examples in my life, but I want to focus on an example from my seminary days which still stirs my heart. For a couple of years, I lived next door to a beautiful Chi-nese family. Grandma Yen, the matriarch, was well into her 80’s when I first met her but still very much in love with Jesus. One day she knocked on my front door to ask a favor of me. Would I be willing to read her favorite Bible verses while she recorded me? I agreed, thinking Grandma Yen was wanting to practice her English, and quickly affirmed her desire to become more fluent. With a smile, she politely correct-ed me stating that it wasn’t about her English, it was about her spiritual life. As she explained it, because she didn’t have a strong command of the English language, the recordings would challenge her to “listen very much when God talks to me.” Grandma Yen has been in Heaven for almost thirty years now, after a lifetime of listening very much to God’s words to her, and then following His directions. I think of her every time the Holiday Season rolls around. She will always serve as an example of holiness for me, and provides a clue for how we can all stay connected to the original meaning of the Holidays.

May we all listen “very much” to the words of God, cherish them, follow them … and help make this Holiday Season truly holy. And may Grandma Yen pray for us.

Sports are a great way for children to burn off energy, learn about teamwork, and stay active and healthy. But some sports come with risks, including head inju-ries. Football is an especial-ly high-risk sport for these types of injuries, given the na-ture of the game. If your child wants to play contact sports, make sure he or she does so safely. Provide prop-er safety equipment that fits. Check helmets and protec-tive gear periodically to ensure that all are still working. Talk to coaches and referees about regular safety checks for fields and team equipment as well. For more information about “Sports and Head Injuries,” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

gift to the tree by Sunday, December 8 and it will be deliv-ered to the Guadalupe Center for their children's Christmas party.
