THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

GAUDETE (REJOICE) SUNDAY

December 11, 2016

First Reading: Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10 Isaiah tells us that when Christ comes, the weak will be made strong, the deaf will hear, the blind will see, and, above all, “sorrow and mourning will flee.”

Second Reading: James 5:7-10 As the farmer waits patiently through winter and spring for the “yield of the soil” so, too, must we wait patiently for the coming of the Messiah.

Gospel: Matthew 11:2-11 While in prison, John sends a messenger to Jesus to ask, “Are you He who is to come or do we look for another?” Jesus replies by citing the miracles he has performed for the blind, the deaf, and the crippled. He concludes by identifying John as the messenger He has sent to prepare the way.

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT GAUDETE – REJOICE SUNDAY

The third Sunday of Advent, originates from the first word of the Introit at Mass (Gaudete – Rejoice). The season of Advent originated as a fast of forty days in preparation for Christmas. By the twelfth century, the fast had been reduced to simple abstinence. Since Pope Gregory the Great was the first to draw up an Office for the Advent Season, the Gregorian Sacramentary is the earliest to provide masses for the Sundays of Advent. On Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday, the church takes a break from the otherwise penitential nature of Advent by acknowledging the closeness of the approaching feast of the nativity. This is seen in the priest wearing the rose-colored vestment and our lighting the rose-colored candle on the Advent wreath. Gaudete Sunday is further marked by a new invitatory, the Church no longer inviting the faithful to adore merely “The Lord who is to come”, but calling them to worship and hail with joy “The Lord who is now nigh and close at hand.” The Epistle again incites us to rejoicing, and bids us prepare to meet the coming Savior with prayers and supplication and thanksgiving, while the Gospel, the words of Saint John the Baptist, warn that the Lamb of God is even now in or midst, though we appear to know him not. The spirit of the Office and Liturgy all through Advent is one of joyful expectation and preparation for the Christmas feast as well as for the second coming of Christ, and the penitential exercise suitable to this spirit are thus suspended on Gaudete or Rejoice Sunday. _____________________________________________

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
