As the month of December begins, I'm looking out the window and watching the rain come down and the dark grey sky setting the mood as it has for what seems like months. I realize that this is winter in Canada, or more precisely, for some of us the Canadian west coast. But wait, it isn't winter yet; it's fall. We have more months of this to come. Obviously all the grey weather can, and, or will affect the mood in a negative way. I have found often over the years that the day the sun comes out, my mood is uplifted, but it also reflects how down I must have been. And then they throw in Daylight Savings Time. Manipulating time has been around since the beginning of time, but the current DST came about so that those of us who live in an industrialized society have time-based activities that remain the same year-round, and this was a way to maximize daylight hours. In the fall, this is great for morning people but sucks for us night owls. There is one thing that always brightens up my winter. A trip to the tropics. Oh, and a night out to enjoy the great live music that we are surrounded by. Seriously, we have some great venues in this city and so much great entertainment, often for the price of a drink. So if you are suffering from the winter blues, take a trip. But in the meantime, go out, listen to live music and visit with friends; it's medicine. Next time we talk it'll be a New Year with new hopes and Christmas will be a memory, so:

BRUCE’S CORNERBC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT :
Keeping the musical traditions of the roaring twenties-and earlier-alive! Benny & the Good Men serves as a tribute to the traditional jazz of Chicago and New Orleans, and the later revival of the 1950's. Formed in the last two years under bandleader Ben MacRae, Benny & the Good Men is a throwback to the days of prohibition, and the hot jazz of the great bandleaders such as Sydney Bechet, Edmund Hall, Bix Beiderbeck and the great Benny Goodman. Although the Good Men play the standard hot jazz repertoire, the band also writes original tunes, and is currently preparing for their first recording, to be released soon.
