Guapacha timing pronounced ‘wah-pah-cha' describes a timing variation of the normal cha cha rhythm. This timing pattern is most

leadable with basic cha cha figures in closed dance position. It provides an extra syncopation in each measure of music, giving cha cha a noticeably different appearance. The manner in which the steps fit into a measure of music is one of the fundamental features that give the dance its distinct character. As such, Guapacha timing adds an interesting accented styling to cha cha.

The tables below give a breakdown of the various actions that are associated with each beat within one measure of music for both standard cha cha and Guapacha timing patterns for clarification and comparison. The step number, foot action, rhythm, beat value and time within the measure are all given for both timing patterns. The normal cha cha rhythm is referenced to standard 4/4 timing and is stated as 1,2,3,4&. Accordingly, there are five steps over four beats of music. This defines the rhythm of one half of a cha cha basic as depicted in the cha cha timing table. A total of ten steps over two measures are needed for a full basic. This has a rhythmic count of 1,2,3,4&, 1,2,3,4&. Each half of the basic has syncopation on count 4& in which two steps are taken over one beat. In contrast, single steps are taken over one beat for counts 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Standard Cha Cha Timing

As previously mentioned, Guapacha timing is a rhythmic variation to standard cha cha rhythm. While the number of steps is the same, there is a difference in the way in the steps are taken. Guapacha timing has an additional syncopated rhythm embedded in each measure. Here is how it works. The step that is normally taken on count 2 is delayed for ½ beat and then taken at the end of count 2 as a syncopated ‘catch-up’ step. Musically stated, this step occurs on the after beat of count 2. The total count for the measure from a dancer’s perspective is 1,2&,3,4&. The Guapacha timing table illustrates the timing characteristic over one measure.

Guapacha Timing

As noted in the table, Guapacha timing has two sets of syncopated actions in each measure, i.e., 2& and 4&. The 2& is unique to this timing pattern as it represents one beat in which the step that is normally taken on count 2 is delayed and then taken on the later portion of that beat. The 4& syncopation however is the same for both normal cha cha and Guapacha timing patterns.

The beat value describes a portion of time for each step or action normalized to a musical ¼ note in this example.

Therefore a step taken on one beat has a beat value of 1. Two actions over one beat will have a beat value of ½ for each action. Standard cha cha timing has two steps over one beat on count 4&. In Guapacha timing there is a hold for ½ beat and a step for ½ a beat over counts 2&. Both actions together are syncopated and yield a beat value of ½ ½. This signifies that two actions are fit into a ¼ note time duration or one musical beat in this example. The 4& syncopation represents the two normal syncopated steps taken over one beat. The 2& syncopated action in Guapacha timing represents the same amount of time as the normal syncopated 4& steps; however, with only one step taken. While the 2& and 4& are both syncopated, the foot actions are quite different.

Guapacha timing creates an atheistically pleasing appearance when danced properly. It is normally danced with basic cha cha, figures however it can also be applied to a variety of other figures. It can be danced over several measures or intermittently throughout the dance. There are no strict rules regarding when to use this timing pattern however it is typically danced for short durations over several measures. Guapacha timing is a fun variation to incorporate into your cha cha routines.

A Tango lesson

by Michael Ditkoff (My article published Nov/Dec 2003 “Amateur Dancers”

In American Tango, the couple dances slightly off centered. Unlike American Tango; dancers in Argentine tango line up center-to-center. Think of a door and a wall. The

hinges on the door and wall line up in front of each other so that a pin can be dropped straight down the middle. No matter how much or fast the door turns, the pin holds the door against the wall. Argentine tango partners dance tango the same way. There is an imaginary pin that keeps the couple chests facing each other.

In ballroom, the couple is joined at the pelvis. The woman feels the man intentions from the pelvis. The couple’s profile looks like the letter “Y” because the woman is leaning slightly backwards. In Argentine Tango, the couple is joined at the chest. The woman feels the man intentions from the upper body (chest and shoulders.) Both partners dance on the balls of their feet. The couple’s profile looks like the letter “A.” Even though their

chests are touching, each partner is responsible for supporting their own weight. Argentine Tango is filled with optical illusions and the couple leaning into each other, supported by the other person is just one of them.

To keep chests facing each other can require a lot of contra body motion. Contra body motion means that the top half of the body isn’t facing the same direction as the bottom half of the body. An example is the popular sequence called “walking the woman to the cross.” The couple line up directly facing each other. Their feet are in front of each other. Both step sideways (man to his left and the woman to her right). On the second step, the man’s right foot hooks around the woman’s left. He is no longer directly in front of his partner but to her right. Both partners have to rotate their chests to their right so that they face each other. The woman continues to feel the lead from the chest. If the couple doesn’t rotate their chests, the woman will feel the man’s arms pushing her down the dance floor. That’s NOT leading!! The man walks forward one step and the woman walks backwards one step. On the next step, the man rotates his shoulders to the left and the woman steps sideways to her right, crossing her left foot in front of her right foot. This cross in front is like the cross in Viennese Waltz. [As an aside, a lot of female ballroom dancers have difficulty with this figure because they are used to always going backwards, not sideways.] The couple is back into alignment, directly in front of each other. If there isn’t contra body motion, the woman will feel the lead from the man’s arms and not his chest. It will feel like the man is pushing her, not leading her.

As strange as it sounds, the woman steps FIRST! (Remember that the partners are aligned in front of each other.) If the man moves forward first, his foot is going to crash into the woman’s foot. (He shouldn’t step on the woman’s foot because his feet shouldn’t leave the floor.) When he doesn’t feel the woman move backwards, he pushes her. That’s not leading. Both partners’ weight should be on the balls of their feet, which will keep their chests forward, maintaining the “A” frame. If he steps side first, he will leave the woman behind and then drag her sideways. That’s not leading either.

The alignment is crucial for dancing Argentine Tango.
