Hampton has no industry. People choose to live here because of the quiet and isolation. Your gun range willcause many to consider living else where. This town does not need the impact of increased traffic and noise.

The gun range would completely ruin my family's ability to enjoy our home and property, would negativelyimpact wildlife and would have severe, negative, financial impact upon us in the form of lowered propertyvalue. NO GUN RANGE IN HAMPTON OR ANYWHERE IN THE QUIET CORNER!

The state of CT should really consider a location that will not effect home values, the creation of noisepollution and have negative impact on the environment and its natural surroundings. It should rethink thisextravagant expenditure at a time of fiscal instability. Why, when there is already an existing facility that iscentrally located, must the state try to force this type of a facility on towns that clearly don't want it onnumerous levels. Just update the existing facility and be done with it!

What is proposed is a very extensive facility and it does not belong in a residentially zoned area. Hampton isnot the place for a paramilitary facility. It would make Hampton a potential target for violence. It is alsotroubling to wonder how the state this proposal when there is such a budget deficit and on-going layoffs. Istrongly oppose Hampton as a site for the State Police Training Facility.

I am against the installation of a State Police Firearms Training Facility in the town of Hampton because it isnot a fair deal for us. The revenue to the town, in the form of taxes (or the equivalent), is small relative to thevalue of the facility and the town will not receive any revenue from the other law enforcement “partners” whowill be sharing the facility. Furthermore, because the State is exempt from the zoning regulations in this town,I believe that they will not be compelled to be a good member of this community. The scope of the facility isalso much larger than I had originally anticipated, and it now seems too large to comfortably fit in here. As theState’s goal is to find a site “in relatively remote areas, far away from critical infrastructure”, it is apparentthat they would rather just ignore us. I suggest that they look farther down the road.

There is no need to create this facility in this area. Why ruin our property values any more? We're expected tolisten to this every summer?!?! One more example of legislators dismissing the state east of the ConnecticutRiver.

We are called "The Quiet Corner" exactly for the peace and quiet of this area. I cannot begin to truly fathomthe affect of hearing gunshots all day long, 5 days per week, will have on myself and my family - to saynothing of potential harm to wildlife and wetland from lead contamination. I do not want to be reminded ofguns/police/violence 20 days per month in my home. NO gun range.

I'm not against gun ranges or dislike the State Police, I just don't think Hampton would be the appropriatearea. Its too quiet and rural. Bozrah or somewhere conveniantly closer to their station would be nice. I just feelthat a gun range in Hampton would effect the wildlife so drastically that residents would begin to have animalissues in their own back yards

It makes no sense to locate one of the noisiest activities in Connecticut in one of the quietest places. Whichwould bother you more? Sitting quietly in your backyard when suddenly your neighbor sings "SweetCaroline" at the top of their lungs or hearing them do the same at a Red Sox game with thousands of otherfans? The greater the background noise, the less intrusive any particular noise becomes.

Not in Hampton By Jamie Boss If there was ever a reason to object to the State of Connecticut building apolice shooting range in Hampton, the response of “Not in Hampton” seems most appropriate. Why? It seems,as small towns in the quiet corner go, we are unique. Had Norman Rockwell lived in Hampton, it would havebeen a gold mine of Americana for him to draw upon for artistic inspiration. There are farms, barns, horses, cows, tractors, hills, rock walls, churches with white steeples, Fourth of July parades with tractors taking theplace of floats, kids holding American flags and maple syrup. We even have the tree that was used on thedesign of the Connecticut Quarter. It is this mix of everything agrarian that separates us from practically allother Connecticut towns. It makes us irreplaceable on a statewide level. It is the things “NOT” found inHampton that sets us apart from our neighbors. Unlike most of our surrounding communities, our small townof some 2000 residents has a few things missing. By choice, over the years, our community forefathers keptthis town as close to its rural beginnings as possible. There are no stores, gas stations, strip malls, shoppingcenters, parking lot lights conflicting with our darkness, traffic lights or other amenities that practically all ofour surrounding communities have. This is a town that hackled when the design of the new school looked too“modern”. When you combine the two state parks with all other forms of open space, we have just about3,000 acres of open space in Hampton. In sharp contrast, our two business zones along route 6 are but a meresliver on the town map. Should the State build a 55,000 square foot facility with accommodations for pistol, rifle, shotguns and automatic weapons, our town would begin a very long road of change. Soon, someonewould open a coffee shop or snack shop to take advantage of the influx of troopers during the week. Havingparking lot that holds 125 cars is a very good indication of the States’ plans regardless of their claims oflimited use. First the coffee, then the gas station and then the tide of change slowly encroaches upon our town. All of the efforts of our previous elders and residents would begin to slowly erode until we become aBrooklyn or Chaplin or Pomfret or Ashford. By design, we are inherently different than these communitiessave, perhaps, Scotland. There are other reasons to object to the range. Personal ones like the houses thatborder the proposed property. The noise and disruption is a major concern for them. Then one thinks about thehorse riding school nearby and whether or not moms will want their kids to be so close to firearms and loudnoises. Loud noises make for jittery horses. The nearby cemeteries will also hear the sound of chattering gunfire during weekday burials. Initially, for the first five years or so, our property values could be affected.Taking in consideration the anti-shooting range hubbub from neighboring towns, should the facility land here,it would take quite awhile for the stigma to wear off. While the State promises “money for taxes”, I tend notto believe what Hartford politicians promise. How they can justify spending $7,000,000 in one shot to supporta mere 1,200 troopers. This amounts to $6,000 per trooper. Meanwhile, everything from hospitals to stateemployees are being affected with our present failing economy. (I fully understand they claimed a 6 milliondollar budget at the town meeting but the shooting range’s online website states a maximum of 7 million. Thetroopers also said there would be no automatic weapon training but when pushed they admitted there wouldbe. This usage of automatic weapons is also indicated on the website for the facility. The most remarkablestatement to come out of the meeting is when the troopers claimed that most of their automatic weapontraining would occur with the weapons set on a semi-automatic. This begs the question “why automatictraining” when the automatic function of the weapon is not in use. I get the sense that many of State Policestatements during the town meeting were down-playing the actual stated plans found online.) More to thepoint, our community is set apart from the world almost as if we were an Amish community. While we mightwear buttons, have zippers on our pants and have few women wearing hats to hide their hair, there is nodenying we intentionally set ourselves apart by our very conservative approach to business developmentwithin this town. Like it or not, Hampton is uniquely rural, even to the point of the residents paying higherproperty taxes as a result of the lack of commercial development with our boundaries. The signs along Route97 say it best….”Welcome to the Historic Village of Hampton”. Our state should see the unique value of ourcommunity and seek building a shooting range elsewhere.

My family lives in this wonderful area and it would just ruin the atmosphere that we think of historic CTareas. Once the state takes this land for a gun range they can do anything that they want with it over time, andthe local residents will be ignored. It is contrary to the lifestyles in CT and especially this area. I know that theproperty values will decline, and I'm sure that it will make it much more difficult to attract new businesses andresidents into the area. I know that I would never even consider living in an area with a gun range, so imaginethe people who have already made this area their home. They've invested a lot in their homes, theircommunities and neighbors- only to have the state decide to ruin it . I personally know the effects of having atown drastically changed forever because on July 6,2013 our town had a train carrying fuel explode , killing47 people. Yes, it was lac- Megantic, Quebec. A town doesn't recover from huge changes like you areproposing, it will kill the kind of town that exists there now. I'm sure there can be another solution, and ,honestly, why do you need a gun range at all? If it is for training police , why not , first, only an indoor range, and on an already existing building that the police own. Just imagine this gun range on the street across fromwhere YOU live- imagine how it would affect your lives. So why force such a terrible situation in others? It isjust not needed in today's society where gun control is being more and more popular. It just doesn't fit withCT.

The presentation given by state at town mting. was not all truthful. Willington found out much more was to bedone at this facility. They also found that there would be little if any extra $ for the town, (Simsbury got all ofapprox. $6,000),that the lead level at the site would be damaging to the surrounding area.I hope our BOSconsiders recanting publicly the "information" that was in the Chronicle before the meeting was held andwaiting for the town's people to express any opinions of their own.

Hampton residents understand, and are respectful of, the need for a training facility for our state troopers butpurchasing over 400 acres of pristine woodlands, ponds, streams and open space in a neighborhood in one ofthe quietest parts of the "Quiet Corner" for a 55,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art firing range facility? It makes NOsense! There are logical options (i.e.) the National Guard facility in East Haven, CT -- far less costlymonetarily and far less costly than ruining lives , ecosystems and the character of one of the few townsremaining in Connecticut with no commercial businesses or traffic lights.

Please no more traffic and noise. I don't want to hear anymore guns and I don't want people speeding by me toget to target practice on time. Focus on issues such as speeding, drunk and distracted driving. Look at fatalitystatistics for the real issues Connecticut is facing. No matter where you place this range, the sound from 4000+ rounds a day from that of a standard issue 9mm(not even including the tactical weapons the troopers were oh-so vague about) would be audible from the likesof Hampton Elementary and Parish Hill, but it would lower property values and drive out wildlife. Althoughthe argument could be made that animals adjust, why create a problem where there is none? There aremultiple commercial ranges in CT gone unused and could be retrofitted. The current CSP firing range lies ona 12.5 acre plot, why do they suddenly need 400 acres in the middle of a residential area?

The state should not be spending money on this at all given ourfiscal situation. Thousands are being layed off causing vital services to be cut and eliminated. The state policehave a gun range!
