Dear Parishioners,
This weekend marks our entrance into the Lenten
“mini”-season known as Passiontide. Passiontide
brings added emphasis to the penitential
solemnity of Lent. This is Holy Mother Church’s
way of saying, “no nonsense; man up.” We have
only two more weeks to increase our self-inflicted penances to
prepare in a more heroic and holy way for the Passion and Death of
Our Lord and then, for His Glorious Resurrection at Easter.
We see that the Church clothes Herself in purple for the final two
weeks of Lent. All of our statues are covered, as are our crucifixes.
Of course, “purpling” the large crucifix on our south wall interior is
impractical as well as potentially dangerous, so we leave that one
alone. But even our beautiful new paintings are covered for this
season. You’ll also notice that our picture of The Divine Mercy has
been removed for this period. The only depictions left unveiled are
the Stations of the Cross and these for very obvious reasons.
Why do we cover our statues? It is an old custom that reflects the
final sentence in the Gospel for the Sunday Mass in the
Extraordinary Form: “…but Jesus hid Himself and went out from the
temple.” The principle is that if the God-Man hides Himself, how
can the Saints not be concealed also? The statues and paintings are
veiled and will be unveiled at the Gloria of the Easter Vigil Mass in
the Extraordinary Form. Come the Resurrection, all the Saints will
rejoice in the Glory of their Redeemer. It’s a wonderful custom.
Even in churches where there is no Extraordinary Form Mass,
veiling statues sometimes is a standard practice; and this, despite the
fact that the incident described in St. John’s Gospel above does not
appear in any 5th Sunday of Lent Gospel, be in year A, B or C. Still,
it is heartening to know that some customs and traditions still play a
major role in the lives of Catholics today and that not everything
needs to be changed or quietly let go. Such things exist for very good
reasons, my children and my friends.

Fifth Sunday of Lent – 07April 2019 Isaiah 43:16-21. Psalm 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6. Philippians 3:8-14.
John 8:1-11.
Writing on the ground. It is amazing how, first silence, then well-
chosen words can defuse the riled-up crowd. Jesus does it today. A
woman is spared shameful treatment by the mercy and compassion
and forgiveness of the One. Perhaps we can spend the rest of Lent
by not picking on others and looking more within. For the face of
mercy is consolation, silence, and compassion.
What stones, intended for another, will I lay down?
Who needs my compassion?
I will do these mercy works, comforting the sorrowful and
forgiving injuries, by _________?

Celebrated Right is a Tragedy
Following Governor Pritzer’s lead in declaring that Illinois will be
the most progressive state in the nation concerning late term abortion
and parent notification, Illinois Democrats have sponsored House
Bill 2495 and Senate Bill 1942, misnamed the “Reproductive Health
Act” along with House Bill 2467 and Senate Bill 1594 which repeals
the Parent Notification of Abortion Act. These bills comprise the
most radical piece of abortion legislation proposed in any state to
date.
If these bills pass, Illinois will become a third trimester abortion
destination, removing all late term limits. Illinois will become an
underage abortion destination, by repealing the Parental Notice Act.
Illinois women will fall victim to substandard, uninspected abortion
facilities by removing nearly all public safety requirements. Illinois
will remove public health protection by allowing abortions to be
performed by nurses and nurse practitioners. Illinois will force all
insurance plans to provide for free abortions including church plans.
Illinois will declare that the unborn child will have no rights under
the law even at 9 months gestation. Illinois will remove abortion
related conscience protections from nurses, doctors and hospitals.
Illinois will remove all public reporting of abortion statistics.
This is reckless endangerment for women and a horrific death for
unborn children. Babies in the womb can feel pain at 20 weeks and
this legislation allows abortion for ANY reason through nine
months. Is this legislation protecting women’s health? A medical
procedure performed by someone who is not a medical doctor and
performed on a minor child without parent knowledge?
State House and Senate legislators can be contacted by visiting their
website or calling. Urge them to vote “No”. State Senators Pat
McGuire (43rd district), 815-207-4445 or Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant
(49th district), 815-254-4211 and State Representatives Larry Walsh,
Jr. ( 86th district), 815-730-8600 or Natalie Manley (98th district),
815-725-2741.
Family Class
Crowning An Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it
be done to me according to your word.” Luke
1:38 For centuries, Mary has been a powerful
presence in our Church and has inspired
generations of believers. Mary's yes to God
exemplifies perfect faith and courage. The
Magnificat, her beautiful song of praise, speaks
of justice, mercy, and peace. It also gives us
clues as to how her life of perfect discipleship
can inspire us today. Getting to know Mary and
reflecting on her life of faith help us to grow in
our own lives. Through Mary we come to deepen
our appreciation of the Mystery of the
Incarnation: God becoming one of us in order to dwell among us and
bring us his salvation. As individuals and as a parish family, we too
are invited to spend some time getting to know Mary. Who is this
woman who, at an early age, was full of grace, faith, and trust in
God? Who is this parent who taught her child and encouraged him
throughout his life? Who is this faithful Jewish woman who watched
her son die, yet believed in the promise that his death would bring
new life to the world? Who was this person who said yes to God
throughout her life? Together as a faith community let us celebrate
Mary's yes and get to know who she was and who she is for us
today. Join us as we close our Religious Education Program school
year by “Crowning an Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary” on
Sunday, April 28th at 8:30 a.m. We will learn about Mary as the
Mother of God, as the greatest of saints, and as a model for our own
lives.
Families are encouraged to bring their own flower to present to
Mary, our mother, during our closing prayer service. Students will be
dismissed after our closing prayer service. If the weather is nice, we
will have this service around our outside statue of our Blessed
Mother. If the weather is rainy, we will have this service in the main
foyer of the school.

Abortion Removes the Unloved and Unwanted Pro-Life Article
I was saddened when I read a letter which appeared to justify
abortion because "it does away with the unwanted and unloved."
What a callous, selfish and inhumane mentality!
Are we to value life only if it is "productive" or "useful" to us, or
happens to be "in favor" at any given time? What about children who
become "unwanted" after birth? Should we allow mothers or fathers
to murder such children, just because they are considered a
"burden?"
After all, this is precisely the reason given by Susan Smith for
drowning her two young sons -- because they were coming between
her and her lover and had therefore become "unwanted."
But what makes the crime any different had she been eight months
pregnant with her twins and aborted them to keep her boyfriend?
Presumably, ardent pro-abortionists would have applauded her for
making a sensible, morally-correct decision based on her own best
interests.
The truth is that there is no justice in a system that allows innocent
people to be harmed at the whim of others. Just as government has
the responsibility and the right to prevent armed robbery, slavery and
rape, it has the same responsibility and right to prevent the killing of
innocent human beings, including those waiting to be born.
