Dear Kindergarten parents and carers, Welcome to Term 2! (Sort of) For as long as this is the new normal, we will be providing work packs every two weeks for your child to supplement the learning you are doing at home. It is the same work that we will be doing with any children that have to come to school. If you are required to go to work, and your child returns to school, it is imperative that you send the work packs back with them, as it is the work we are doing at school! We encourage you to spend time with your little ones doing everyday things such as reading books, cooking, talking to them, playing games and building puzzles, counting how many ingredients are in a recipe, colouring in; take every opportunity to show them how often the things they are learning about occur in everyday life. In a Kindergarten classroom, workbooks and worksheets account for about 10-15% of our day to day learning. Learning always takes place with links to real life experiences and with the use of concrete materials. Children need to be provided with lots of learning opportunities in different ways before putting their ideas onto paper. In order to provide as many reading resources for your children as possible, we have provided online services like Storyline Online and Storybox, as well as Bug Club which we will regularly update with new readers. We are happy to supply 2 new home readers per week, if you are able to come in and collect these from your class teacher before school hours (8:10am – 8:40am), or just after bell time in the afternoon (2:25pm). Our Literacy focus this term is rhyming. Please read lots of rhyming books and point out any words you find that rhyme. We would be up to introducing List Four (Yellow) sight words this fortnight. Please refer to suggested timetable for information regarding these. Spelling is taught in a very particular way at this early stage in schooling. You have been provided with 2 weeks’ worth of spelling - Sort 7 is for week 1, and Sort 8 for week 2. As we are working on rhymes, these two sorts are rhyme focused. Spelling activities are done over a number of days throughout the week. On the first day, children look at the pictures in the sort, identify what the pictures are, colour them in and cut out the pictures. On the second day, they sort the pictures into groups (see below) and you mix them up a few times for them to sort again. (Do this 3 times). On the last day children sort into the groups and stick onto the backing sheet, or booklet provided. For Sort 7, children are pairing rhyming words/pictures according to the rhymes in the booklet “Oh A- Hunting We Will Go”.

Dear Kindergarten parents and carers,

Welcome to Term 2! (Sort of)

For as long as this is the new normal, we will be providing work packs every two weeks for your child

to supplement the learning you are doing at home. It is the same work that we will be doing with any

children that have to come to school. If you are required to go to work, and your child returns to

school, it is imperative that you send the work packs back with them, as it is the work we are doing at

school!

We encourage you to spend time with your little ones doing everyday things such as reading books,

cooking, talking to them, playing games and building puzzles, counting how many ingredients are in a

recipe, colouring in; take every opportunity to show them how often the things they are learning

about occur in everyday life. In a Kindergarten classroom, workbooks and worksheets account for

about 10-15% of our day to day learning. Learning always takes place with links to real life experiences

and with the use of concrete materials. Children need to be provided with lots of learning

opportunities in different ways before putting their ideas onto paper.

In order to provide as many reading resources for your children as possible, we have provided online

services like Storyline Online and Storybox, as well as Bug Club which we will regularly update with

new readers. We are happy to supply 2 new home readers per week, if you are able to come in and

collect these from your class teacher before school hours (8:10am – 8:40am), or just after bell time in

the afternoon (2:25pm). Our Literacy focus this term is rhyming. Please read lots of rhyming books and

point out any words you find that rhyme.

We would be up to introducing List Four (Yellow) sight words this fortnight. Please refer to suggested

timetable for information regarding these.

Spelling is taught in a very particular way at this early stage in schooling. You have been provided with

2 weeks’ worth of spelling - Sort 7 is for week 1, and Sort 8 for week 2. As we are working on rhymes,

these two sorts are rhyme focused. Spelling activities are done over a number of days throughout the

week. On the first day, children look at the pictures in the sort, identify what the pictures are, colour

them in and cut out the pictures. On the second day, they sort the pictures into groups (see below)

and you mix them up a few times for them to sort again. (Do this 3 times). On the last day children sort

into the groups and stick onto the backing sheet, or booklet provided.

For Sort 7, children are pairing rhyming words/pictures according to the rhymes in the booklet “Oh A-

Hunting We Will Go”.

Page 2: Dear Kindergarten parents and carers T2 · have regular breaks between activities, so as to not overload the children. Every 15-20 minutes try a little brain break activity, star

For Sort 8, children are grouping words/pictures that rhyme with the heading on the backing sheet

“Nose, Knees, Hair, Head”.

There may be some pictures/words that children are unfamiliar with and they may need assistance

with these. For example, pail instead of bucket, and dish instead of bowl.

It is important for children to be exposed to numbers and maths all the time. The Suggested Timetable

has plenty of repeatable Maths and Counting activities. Please do Whole Number activities all day

every day and choose one asterisked Maths activity to focus on per day. We have provided a counter

and some coloured maths resources in this Pack, keep an eye on Dojo for other TENs activities that

you can do with your child.

We will be starting our History unit this Term. There is a History work booklet for students to start

provided in this pack. Children are encouraged to interview and talk about their family and heritage as

often as possible to assist with completing this booklet. Find photographs as well as drawings. Please

talk with your children about family stories (recipes, traditions, celebrations, funny stories, etc)

whenever possible. Phone calls with Grandparents is a great way to supplement this. Keep an eye out

for Speaking and Listening tasks set through Class Dojo!

Please be advised that on the Suggested Timetable, activity times are a guide and it is important to

have regular breaks between activities, so as to not overload the children. Every 15-20 minutes try a

little brain break activity, star jump counting, Simon says, GoNoodle, a dance or song, breathing,

stretching, etc.

As mentioned, keep an eye on your Dojo Stories and messages for any additional work/activities. You

can contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We have loved seeing your work on your

portfolios and would love to continue to see this. It makes it easier when everything you have been

working on is in one place for us to look at when we miss you! Please note that we may not be able to

respond instantly during class time, as we will be supervising any children that are not able to stay at

home.

See you soon,

Mr Kertesz, Mrs Franklin & Ms Packer
