Thursday, February 28, 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, I would like to give a brief update on the work of the 2019 special General Conference, which concluded yesterday evening. The short of it is this: the Traditional Plan was approved, which affirms and enforces more strictly the “incompatibility” language already found in the Book of Discipline. The One Church Plan, which the majority of bishops endorsed was voted down. While this is the outcome of the General Conference in a nutshell, the proverbial dust has yet to settle. Much of the Traditional Plan is under review, as some of its key components have been deemed unconstitutional (they are not allowed by our Book of Discipline). We do not yet know how this will all shake out, but one thing is certain: plenty of people are hurting today. Many of us hoped for a way forward that would honor the diversity that exists in United Methodism, and we hoped the UMC would find a way to “honor all the parts,” as we have recently preached from I Corinthians. If I might follow in the vein of our recent sermon series, I would write: To God’s church, Be gentle to one another. Keep asking, who is hurting and how can I be balm of healing to them? Keep talking. Keep paying attention. Keep praying. Remember who your God is, and reclaim who God has called us to be. There will be more to say in the days ahead, as more information and decisions emerge, but in the meantime, if you would like to talk or cry or scream, I am around, Pastor Sherrie will be back from the mission trip this weekend, Stephen Ministers are available too. Pastor Jonathan Sincerely,

Dear Friends in Christ,I would like to give a brief update on the work of the 2019 special General Conference, which concluded yesterday evening.

from Africa and the United Statesand share it with new friends. All areinvited to gather at 5:00 pm for aLenten multicultural worship servicewith communion.

Lenten StudiesLent is just around the corner. During this time of reflection and self-examination, theAdult Spiritual Formation team would like to offer various ways for you to enter into thissolemn season. Lenten groups form in various ways: Sunday School classes and established weekdaystudies will use these materials, but we also want to invite you to think creatively ofways to meet in new places and with new people.

We are encouraging groups to choose from one of three studies:Plenty Good Room: a look at Lent through the lens of African American spirituals.Join this study at St. Paul’s on Wednesday nights, March 13-April 17, 6:00-7:00 pm.Co-facilitators are Rev. Sherrie Ilg and Ben Owen, Sanctuary Choir Director. Toreserve your spot, please email Pastor Sherrie at [email protected].

Renovate: using the metaphor of a house renovation and the book of Nehemiah,Jacob Armstrong invites us to look at our own lives as works in progress.

Simon Peter: Adam Hamilton guides a look at the flawed, yet leader of thedisciples.

A display of these books will be on display in the office in the near future.

And, in addition to these group studies, we have a devotional from A Sanctified Art thatwill correspond with our Lenten sermon series. You can pick up a copy of the devotionalin the church office.

If you have any questions, want us to order books for you, or you would like help startinga new group, please contact Pastor Jonathan ([email protected]).

and your family might “indulge in” 6 healthy practices during Lent that lead to healthierbodies, minds and spirits. Led by St. Paul's member and registered dietitian, Judy
