The worst thing that can happen to any parent is when their child goes missing. I cannot start to de- scribe the nightmare, the feelings, emotions, and thoughts that raged through my head when this happened to me. I only know that we did some- thing right and hope through this letter I will be able to help other parents, and thank those who assisted us. Some tips: 1. Never wait 24 hours to start looking for your child; I don’t care who says what, even if the police advise you to wait, don’t. It is cru- cial to get the information surrounding your child’s disappearance out as quickly as pos- sible, and living in Rustenburg I realised that the rest of the community responds and as- sists immediately. 2. Visit the places your child knows. The change of them moving around in your neighbour- hood from one hideout to another is good. Notify your neighbourhood, put everyone on alert to be on the look-out. Notify shop own- ers, petrol attendants, bar men and ladies, youth groups at the churches (we received most of our search information from the youth) and notify all the community forums and/or pages who you are looking for, what they look like, clothes that they are wearing and when they were last seen. Give them your contact number and keep your phone on and the battery charged. 3. Talk with all of her/his friends, be aware that you post the correct photos, do not post pho- to’s of children that is not involved. 4. Follow-up on every lead, visit every place where they were spotted. 5. Pray!!! We got to a point where we stopped driving, we were exhausted, and that is when the waiting starts. During this time, stay on the social pages, continue to phone the contacts you picked up during your search, because we found that during 4h00 – 6h00 everyone were exhausted and the search enthusiasm started to spiral downward. We were lucky as the first people we made con- tact with when the nightmare started; spotted them, and notified the commando. We got them back – thank God! It could have been so much worse. Rustenburg is paved with evil elements and God’s Angels protected them from that, the entire night. I would like the make special mention of the fol- lowing Individuals and Groups that assisted us, and I apologise if I leave somebody out: 1. The commando; 2. CPF & RCCF; 3. StaanSaam Rustenburg, Naomi thank you for all your Angels that helped us; 4. Parents: The other children’s parents for be- ing there for me, we comforted one another and also for all the Mom and Dad’s out there that got into their cars and joined the search. I can only think how many litres of petrol and diesel were driven out, and want to thank you for using your own resources to assist. I can never repay you. 5. Solly, Juanita and Waldo van der Walt from Pro-Sec Africa, also my son’s Karate coach- es, thank you that you pulled in a lot of fa- vours to get answers we needed before the search kicked off. You guys are awesome. 6. Platinum Publishers’ Owners and co-work- ers for assisting us, comforting us, praying for us, even after the event, your encourage- ment and prayers carried us through a dif- ficult time. 7. All the members on StaanSaam Rustenburg and the members on “Dagboek vir ‘n Ouer” - thank you for the prayers, the advice and the referrals. You guys showed that Rustenburg is united and that there is a lot of help out there for our youth that succumbed to the temptation of using drugs. 8. Grenswag High School – thank you to every teacher that assisted us and thank you for your assistance in finding solutions after- wards. 9. His Vision Church – Francois Becker and Shirak thank you for offering to walk this dif- ficult road with us, and talking to my son. 10. Vision of Hope – Wynand, thank you for the program that you put in place for my son, thank you for the mentoring and coaching for us as a family unit, and thank you for under- standing what we are going through. Thank you for sitting with us and designing a work- able solution to assist my son. You made me see light again. 11. Last but not least: Kabous thank you for try- ing, trying to fight this devil in your life, for try- ing to rectify what you have done and trying to change your life style. Mom loves you and will be there no matter what. You are my son and I will fight for and with you every day. Due to all the information that was shared with me I am busy compiling a document with all the details. The second worse call a parent can get, is when you are informed your child is involved with drugs. There is help and please understand that you as a parent cannot solve this or rehabilitate your child on your own. We were naïve to believe this the first time, but realised now it was just an illusion. You must get help for your child, other- wise the problem will just escalate.
