Orphan Disease Forum - Specialized Marketing & Sales: A Vision for Orphan and Targeted

Therapies

When: Wednesday, June 20, 8:30 am - 9:45 am

Where: Room #209 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center

Website: http://mybio.zerista.com/event/member/46585#speakers

Donna LaVoie will moderate a panel at the 2012 BIO International Convention titled,

"Specialized Marketing & Sales: A Vision for Orphan and Targeted Therapies." Biotech

companies have paved the way for specialized marketing approaches for orphan diseases

since the early 1990s. Some companies have developed life-changing therapies that truly

change disease states. Today, biotech/pharma leaders have jumped in. But can all

companies large and small find the focus for these orphan diseases and put the patient

first? What are the obstacles associated with creating a specialized marketing and sales

effort for orphan drugs? Gain critical understanding of how companies are employing

specialized marketing and sales approaches that are patient-centric.

Speakers on the panel include:

Kyle Brown Founder & CEO of Innolyst

Jayne Gershokowitz, Senior Director of Patient Advocacy & Public Policy of Amicus

Therapeutics

Mark Rothera, Global President of Aegerion Pharmaceuticals

Rogerio Vivaldi, SVP and Head of Rare Disease Business Unit of Genzyme

Using Systems Biology to "Fast-Track" Development and Approval of Novel

Therapeutics and Diagnostics

When: Thursday, June 21st, 2012, 10:00 am - 11:30 am.

Where: Boston Convention & Exhibition Center

Overview of Systems Biology and how its application can determine more precisely and

quickly which biomarkers are relevant to specific diseases for diagnosis or therapeutic

intervention. This approach can also determine subgroups or different genotypes within

these diseases in developing a diagnostic test that will determine whether a patient will

respond to a specific drug with minimal side effects.

Drugs can now be targeted for a specific set of patients resulting in higher efficacy. In

return, the FDA requirements for the number of patients required for the phase I-III trials

may be smaller, the cost and time for R&D will be reduced and the approval time will be

shorter.

Moderator: 1) Regina Au, MBA, MIM - Principal, Strategic Marketing Consultant at BioMarketing Insight

Speakers: 1) David E. Hill, PhD - Research Scientist in Cancer Biology and Associate Director of the

Center for Cancer Systems Biology (CCSB) at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI).

Where: Constant Contact, Reservoir Place, 1601 Trapelo Road, Waltham, MA

Registration: For additional information and to register

Speaker: Mike Attili- President, Amaxo, Inc.

Conventional wisdom holds that the FDA prefers to see medical device manufacturers use a

sequential, waterfall lifecycle for product and software development. The result has led many

companies to bend and twist the process they actually use so that it looks like a linear

process to their regulators. No one is fooled and these efforts mainly add overhead and

waste. More importantly, they do little to improve the safety and effectiveness of their

products.

A growing number of medical device companies are adopting, and adapting, agile principles

and practices for the development of regulated software; not just to improve efficiency, but

also safety and effectiveness. This session will explore how to apply agile principles in a way

that is consistent with FDA regulations and guidance; how agile and XP practices can be

used to reduce risk and improve safety; which practices need modification to support the

demands of safety critical software; and how these have been applied on real projects to

achieve compliance.

"Managing Career Progression: From Individual Contributor to Manager and Beyond"

Onsite registration is allowed; Member rate- $40 Nonmember rate- $70

So you have been promoted to a managerial role; now what?! It can be difficult as a new

manager to find resources to help prepare you for what to expect in your new role. Even an

experienced manager continuously searches for resources and tips to become a more effective

manager, especially as their responsibilities, and those of their employees, increase. This

program will discuss the progression of individual contributors to managers and beyond,

including challenges and best practices. A panel of managers will share their journeys,

challenges they have faced and how they overcame them. A career development coach will

introduce the topic and guide the discussion through several key take away practices, which will

be useful for managers at all levels.

While there will be time for participants to ask questions, we encourage you to submit a question

or challenge you face prior to the event to help facilitate the discussion. Please send questions to

[email protected].
