1 May 2020 Dear AP Human Geography student, Welcome to AP Human Geography! I am looking forward to working with you in the upcoming school year as we explore the major themes in Human Geography. Your summer assignment includes the following four parts. 1. Obtaining some history background. Geographers ask 3 primary questions: Where is it located, why is it located there, and why is it important? Often the “why” relates to history. So, in order to help with our study of geography, part of your summer assignment will be reviewing major events in history that relate to our study of geography. There will be around 2 hours of video clips to watch. You will want to take notes on the key characteristics of the event: what happened, why did it happened, and why it was significant (i.e. what changed because of the event). Please note the what and significance often have more than one reason. There is a note taking guide attached to this letter to assist you. The videos should be accessed using Edpuzzle (www.edpuzzle.com). Please let me know if you have any issues accessing these; I am happy to help and will be checking my email throughout the summer. If you have not enrolled in Edpuzzle before, you will need to create an account and then enroll in the class. The enrollment code for our Geo class is vodpibr. Watch the videos in this order: World History overview History of the World Age of Industry (both parts) Africa: States of Independence 2. Textbook reading and taking notes, Chapters 1 & 2: Read the attached PDF selection from your textbook and take handwritten notes. Please be aware this is atypical for the type of reading we will generally do. We will more often be reading about different geographical phenomenon such as population issues, industrial location, culture, etc. However, we do need to all have a shared understanding of the science of geography, as well as an idea of the reading level of the textbook, so this is a good introductory reading to do over the summer. The readings assigned for summer is typical of what we will read over a two week period. Notetaking Tips: Look for the main ideas and supporting details/examples—write these down in your notes Do NOT directly copy from the textbook word for word. Read at least one paragraph or section at a time, and then determine the key ideas/examples and write these down in your own words. Please complete your notes by hand. Do not take notes on your computer as they will not be accepted. Research shows better retention/learning when notes are taken via hand.
