En el segundo día de noviembre, Gabriel Gallo canta, “¡Quiquiriquí! ¡Quiquiriquí! ¡Despiértense todos y vengan al árbol familiar!”

On the second day of November, Gabriel Gallo sings “Cock-a-doodle doo! Cock-a-doodle doo! Everyone, wake up and come to the family tree!”

Llegan sus amigos rápidamente. Gabriel anuncia, “Hoy es un día especial porque es el Día de los Muertos”. Todos los animales se animan. ¡Hay tanto que hacer!

Gabriel’s friends arrive quickly. Gabriel announces, “Today is a very special day because today is the Day of the Dead.” All the animals get excited. There is so much to do!

María pregunta tímidamente, “¿Qué es el Día de los Muertos?” Gabriel le explica, “Es un día para acordarnos de los familiares y amigos que ya no viven”.

Mary asks shyly, “What is Day of the Dead?” Gabriel explains, “It is a day to remember family and friends who are not alive anymore.”

Mary asks, “Like my grandparents? They are not alive anymore. It makes me very sad.” Yolanda Llamas answers, “Yes, but today we will be happy thinking about them. Your grandparents were great dancers!”

María pregunta, “¿Como mis abuelos? Ellos ya no viven. Me da mucha tristeza”. Yolanda Llamas responde, “Sí, pero hoy nos alegraremos pensando en ellos. ¡Cómo bailaban!”

Leonard explains, “Mary, imagine that your grandparents could come visit you again. What would you do to welcome them? Those are the things we do on the Day of the Dead. I will draw pictures of our loved ones who have died.” Mary asks him, “Would you help me draw a picture of my grandparents?” “Of course,” says Leonard.

Leonardo explica, “María, imagínate si tus abuelos te pudieran visitar otra vez. ¿Qué harías para recibirlos? Esas son las cosas que hacemos en el Día de los Muertos. Yo voy a pintar dibujos de nuestros seres queridos que han muerto”. María le pregunta, “¿Me ayudarías a pintar un dibujo de mis abuelos?” “Con mucho gusto”, contesta Leonardo.

After drawing with Leonard, Mary visits Yolanda and Gabriel. They are dressing up Halloween skeletons and tying them to the fence. “Mary, you need a La Catrina costume!” exclaims Yolanda. “La Catrina was a fancy lady from the past. On the Day of the Dead, the best thing to do is dress up like La Catrina skeletons!”

Después de pintar con Leonardo, María visita a Yolanda y Gabriel. Están vistiendo a unos esqueletos de Halloween y atándolos a la cerca. “Son calacas”, explica Gabriel. “¡María! ¡Te hace falta un disfraz de La Catrina!” exclama Yolanda. “La Catrina era una dama elegante de los tiempos antiguos. Lo mejor del Día de los Muertos es que nos vestimos de La Calavera Catrina”.

Yolanda gives Mary a wide hat with feathers. “I love it, Yolanda. It fits perfectly!” says Mary.

Yolanda le pone un sombrero ancho con plumas. “Me encanta, Yolanda. ¡Me queda perfecto!” dice María.

Mary flies to Violet Velascow’s kitchen. “Something smells delicious!” says Mary. Violet and Christina Cabral are decorating sugar skulls and making Bread of the Dead. Mary, amazed, says “What beautiful sweets! You have done a great job!” “Thank you, Mary! Try one.”

María vuela a la cocina de Violeta Velascow. “¡Algo huele delicioso!” dice María. Violeta y Cristina Cabral están decorando calaveras de azúcar y haciendo el Pan de Muerto. Impresionada, María dice, “¡Qué lindos dulces! ¡Y qué detalle!” “¡Gracias María! Prueba uno”.

“Cock-a-doodle doo! Cock-a-doodle doo!” Gabriel calls his friends again. “The skeletons are ready! Aren’t they funny? The skeletons are the best thing about the Day of the Dead party!”

“¡Quiquiriquí! ¡Quiquiriquí!” Gabriel vuelve a llamar a sus amigos. “Ya están las calacas. ¿No son graciosas? ¡Las calacas son lo mejor de la fiesta!”

Violet and Christina arrive with trays of sugar skulls and bread, “We can start the party now,” says Violet. “The best part of the Day of the Dead is the food!” adds Christina.

Violeta y Cristina llegan con bandejas de calaveras de azúcar y pan. “Ahora sí podemos empezar la fiesta”, dice Violeta. “¡Lo mejor del Día de los Muertos es la comida!” añade Cristina.

Yolanda arrives, carrying long dresses and hats with flowers for her friends to wear. She says aloud, “And now I will read you a poem. It is about Mary’s grandparents: I remember the dancing grandparents. When I’m dancing, I remember!”

Yolanda llega cargando vestidos largos y sombreros con flores para que sus amigas se disfracen. Les dice en voz alta, “Ahora les voy a leer un poema, una calaverita. Se trata de los abuelos de María: Recuerdo a los abuelos bailando, ¡Bailando, los recuerdo!”11

Leonard finally arrives and says, “Here are the drawings, and these really are the best thing about the party.” He places them along the fence. Mary is confused. Each of her friends says that they have done the best thing to get ready for the Day of the Dead.

Al fin llega Leonardo y dice, “Traigo los dibujos y éstos sí son lo mejor de la fiesta”. Los recarga a lo largo de la cerca. María está confundida. Los amigos discuten sobre quién ha hecho las preparaciones más importantes y sobre qué es lo mejor del Día de los Muertos.

Mary looks at the smiling skeletons. She takes a Bread of the Dead and places it in front of the drawing of her grandparents. She tells her friends, “Each one of you has done something nice to remember the ones we love. I think that must be the best thing about Day of the Dead.”

María mira a las calacas sonrientes. Toma un Pan de Muerto y lo pone delante del dibujo de sus abuelos y les dice a sus amigos, “Cada uno de ustedes ha hecho algo bonito para recordar a nuestros seres queridos. A mí me parece que eso es lo mejor del Día de los Muertos”.

The animals think about it for a moment. Yolanda says, “You are right, Mary. Friends, let’s dance like Mary’s grandparents would! Gabriel, will you please sing for us?” Gabriel sings, and they all dance and celebrate the Day of the Dead.

Los animales piensan por un momento. Yolanda dice, “Tienes toda la razón, María. Amigos, ¡bailaremos como los abuelos de María! Gabriel, ¿nos cantas, por favor?” Gabriel canta y todos bailan y celebran el Día de los Muertos.14
