Baker Hughes Process Systems’ (BHPS)VORTOIL® hydrocyclone separators offera combination of high performance, smallsize, light weight, reliability and low costoperation unmatched by any otherseparation technology.

VORTOIL separators are widely used inoffshore oil production for treatment oflarge volumes of produced water, prior todisposal to the environment. Proven in awide variety, of industrial applications, theuse of VORTOIL hydrocyclone systemshas increased by 50% in the last few years.

Our commitment is to continuous researchin order to provide only the highest standardof service. This ensures that the BHPS’VORTOIL hydrocyclone system deliversunsurpassed performance in terms of bothefficiency and environmental impact.

Advantages Over ConventionalSeparators

• The units are compact, lightweight andcan be installed either horizontally or

vertically; with minimal footprintrequirements.

• With no moving parts, operation can bemaintenance free. For many applicationsoperation will require no external powerrequirements and minimal controls.

• BHPS hydrocyclones are ideal formodular expansion as process needsincrease. Reduced installation costs andthe ability to increase capacity as neededare major advantages.

• The hydrocyclone operates by generatingextremely high centripetal forces, achieving separation in seconds, compared to conventional separatorswhich may require up to 30 minutes forseparation.

• The hydrocyclone process is insensitiveto motion, making it ideal for floatingproduction systems.

• Most operations are successful utilizingprocess or inherent feed pressure.

• Normally performance-enhancingchemicals are not required to achieve thedesired results.

• There is no environmental pollution.

• BHPS VORTOIL hydrocyclones can bepackaged with capacities that depend onworking pressure and flow. Oil waterseparation problems need no longer bea bottleneck to increased production.

Construction And Design Services

Baker Hughes Process Systems’ VORTOILseparators are constructed from materialsthat process compatibility resistance toerosion and corrosion. Hydrocycloneseparators are designed for packaging intopressure vessels. These systems are designedto meet the requirements of ASME orBS5500.

We offer process design assistance and canprovide engineered, modular systems.BHPS units have piping, controls andother devices such as collection vessels orsolid separators as needed to meet yourseparation requirements.

Systems For Every Application

The “G” Series

The Baker Hughes Process Systems’ ‘G’Series™ VORTOIL hydrocyclone rangerepresents the industry standard for highcapacity deoiling and offers an unrivalledcombination of:

• Separation efficiency

• Operating turndown

• Cost-effective design

• Variety of space efficient unit sizes

• Modular construction for simpleexpansion

Based on the highly successful ‘G’hydrocyclone, we have introduced the ‘Gm’hydrocyclone. Using a high density packingdesign the ‘Gm’ hydrocyclone increasesflow rate up to 30% and results in up to10% higher oil removal efficiencies.

The ‘Gm’ hydrocyclone incorporates thesame proven corrosion and erosion resistantalloy materials, and retains the exclusive‘G’ Series hydrocyclone geometry forexceptional operation.

Separation Process

BHPS VORTOIL hydrocyclones are theultimate development of the hydro-cyclone principle, which is based on thephysics of enhanced gravity separationand free vortex action in an enclosedspace. The hydrocyclone has a cylindricalinlet followed by a tapered tube. Liquidsenter through tangential inlets. Thiscreates a high velocity swirling action

and sets up strong centripetal forceswhich cause the denser liquid to format the outer edge, while the less denseliquid migrates to form a core at thecenter. These centripetal forcescombined with differential pressures setup across the hydrocyclone allow theheavy phase to exit at the underflowwhile the lighter less dense phase fallsinto reverse flow and exits at the oppositeend as the overflow.

BHPS VORTOIL hydrocyclones canachieve greater than 99% removal of oilfrom water, and can remove oil dropletssmaller than 10 microns in diameter. The separator can achieve thisperformance while concentrating therecovered oils into a stream that is lessthan 2% of the inlet flow volume. Othermodels can separate mixtures of up to40% oil-in-water, or can be used toremove water from low viscosity oils.

Patented geometry to providestabilized oil core andminimized reject rate.Additional core stabilizationdevices are not required.

Easily replacable non-threaded, erosionresistant alloy inletsection optimized toprovide maximumefficiency, capacity andturndown.

Patented packagingconcept to give maximumcapacity with minimumspace. Easy access formaintenance.

Smooth thick walledconstruction to minimizewear and maximizeoperating life.

Unique curved wall profiledeveloped to give maximumseparating forces with minimalturbulence and dropletshearing.

Designed to operate atprocess pressure therebyoptimizing system design.Pressure vessel containmenteliminates unwantedatmospheric emissions.

Wide range ofstandard vessel sizesand materials availableto suit each individualapplication.

The “K” SeriesThe more challenging oil/water separationsare made possible with the super-efficientBaker Hughes Process Systems’ ‘K’ Series™VORTOIL hydrocyclone. The ‘K’ Series isthe first choice for oil removal at lowerpressures and temperatures.

Benefits include:

• High efficiency at low pressure operation

• Removes smaller oil droplets(<5 microns)

• Lower temperature operation

• Compact pressure vessel design

• Suitable for use with centrifugal pumps

The patented ‘K’ Series hydrocyclone offersa significant improvement in oil removalefficiency over other hydrocyclone designs.Comparative trials have shown the ‘K’ Seriesto be up to 50% more effective, whilemaintaining a superior turndown at loweroperating pressures.

For lower temperature applications, such asthose found typically in offshore applications, the ‘Kl’ hydrocyclone is a lightweight, syntheticdesign, which combines efficiency and durabilityat a lower cost.

‘K’ Series hydrocyclones have also beendeveloped for small industrial applications. The ‘Kl’ hydrocyclone can be supplied as anindividual stand-alone unit, or as part of a totalsystem depending on individual requirements.

Industry Applications

• Oil Production:Produced water treatment for dischargeor reinjectionFree-water knockout/ preseparationNatural gas liquids dehydration

• Refining & Chemical Processing:Deoiling feed to strippersAPI separator replacementDesalter water discharge

• Sewage and Waste Treatment:Oil removal from wastewater

• Environmental:Oil/organics removal from groundwaterOil removal from wastewater pits

Baker Hughes Process Systems VORTOILhydrocyclones can provide improvedperformance with reduced operating and

maintenance costs. A variety of performanceprediction methods can be used to quicklydetermine the suitability of a VORTOILhydrocyclone system for your application. Inaddition, BHPS maintains a selection of pilotequipment available for rental and on-sitetesting. Please contact your local Sales officefor more information about VORTOILproducts and services.
