C elebrating 25 Y ears

T his August i s our 25th anniversary as a communi ty. D uri ng the comm unity gathering on August 28t h, w e

w ill take ti me to celebrate thi s aw esome mi lestone for the H i-Sky Emmaus Com munit y.

The board asks that all past lay directors help in this celebration by bringing their walk cross to the gathering.

M ake plans to joi n us in fell ow ship and celebration of t he wor k G od has done thr ough Hi Sky Emm aus in t hespast 25 years as well as what He will do in the next 25!

The H i-Sky Emm aus Comm uni-ty has been a huge par t o f m yli fe for close to 20 years. I w ason W omen's W alk # 41 in Janu-ar y, 1993. I have many long-time friendships and so manyblessings fr om all thi sti me. M ost of the blessings havebeen w rapped up in w atchingother w omen go through the 3-

day weekend just as I di d andseeing God touch their hearts ina way they'd never experi encedbefore. W hat a pri vilege tohave a small part i n that! H e isSO good! Congratulations to Hi-Sky for remaining true to God'scall to servant leadership.

W hat has Emm aus m eant to m e?

Em m aus is th e place where I learn ed t hat dedicatin g m yself to service in

the church is no t o nly m y r ight and responsib i l i ty , but also i t is my

privilege. Em m aus is the place that I get to f ellowship with o ther l ik e

m ind ed people from churches all over the city and W est Texas. It is the

place I have found opportunities to serve through the Body of Christ

ou tside the walls of m y chu rch. it is the place I have m ade m any valued

fr iendships and ul t im ately m et m y best f r iend and no w wife. Emm aus

is the vehic le where I fo und in volvem ent in som ething bigger than m e

and to be a key oppo rtu ni ty and a place where I can t ruly see the Ho ly

Spirit get a ho ld o f som eon e and change their l i fe forever.

I cherish m y ti m e servin g God th ro ugh Em m aus, realizing that service

is supplem ental to m y service th rou gh m y church, and shoul d never

replace m y hom e church experience and in vol vem ent.

I thank God fo r th e Em m aus Com m uni ty , bo th th rough H i Sky and

the greater Emm aus Com m unit y where I am always welcom e.

There arent many periods during my life I know what I

was doing at a particular time, but August 1987 isnt one

o f t h e m .

I w as having a baby!

And w hi le I was giving li fe to a chi ld, a few fai thf ul peop le

answ ered th e cal l of God and fol low ed a bold vision to give

l i fe to an Em m aus Com m unit y in M idland, Texas. The f i rstwalk (Womens Walk #1) was held at Camp Butman with

Carol Crum pt on as the Lay Director and Julius Early as th eSpiritual Director. Theres no doubt in my mind it was

The Best Walk Ever! And although it was difficult work,

the smal l com m uni ty s tood together on t he prom ises o f

God and began to f lour ish. The love of Christ w as evident

then , as i t is now , and l ives have transform ed dur ing th is

short course in Christ iani ty. Over the years, count less peo-ple grew by leaps and boun ds in their fa i th as God used

the Em m aus m ovement as a power fu l inst rum ent for sp i r -

i tua l fo rm at ion.

I attended Womens Walk #101 in October of 1999 at

Cam p Butm an. Lor i W atson was the Lay Director and Alan

W il l iam s was the Spir i tu al Director .

And m ay I say - it was The Best Walk Ever! And while I

loved the w eekend, i t w as w hat I d id a f terwards that t r u ly

m atter ed... I was inspired to serve! And serve I have. In

m y church, in my com m uni ty , my fam i ly and o f course theHi Sky Emmaus Community. Im hooked! Theres nothing

m ore I love to do but be the h ands and feet of Jesus!

Happy 25th Anniversary Hi Sky Em m aus! M ay you be

b lessed w i th m any years to come.

Suffering is inevitable. We dont like to hear that. In this

l i fe, misery is option al . Suffer ing is not, but m isery is.

Those w ords cal l us to f ace and adm it th e real i ty of suffer-

ing , and they rem ind us that w e have som e pow er overthe w ay we respond - -- w hen suf fer ing com es. As much as

w e w ould l ike to be l ieve that w e can avo id hur t , st rugg le ,

and loss, l i fe br ings di f f icul t ies to al l of us. For som e, th ese

diff icul t ies threaten o ur fa i th . Som e people say that God

cannot be good and also al low the evi l and suffer ing thatare part of this world. For some, lifes pain becomes so

overwhelm ing that t hey have no fa i th anymore.

Hi Sky Em m aus seeks to help fel low Christ ians in our com -

munity to restore their faith by holding Walks to Em-

maus- -- i t i s not on ly t o he lp t he p i lg r ims in the i r w a lkbut t he Em m aus team as w el l . We al l receive many bless-

ings bot h seen and unseen on t hese walks. Over 3000 peo-

p le in our comm uni ty have a t tended th ese walks in our 25

year histor y.

W e see clear ly wh at God w ants for us: that w e l ive in close

fr iendship w ith God and in heal ing relat ionships. In our

Reunion Groups we can help wit h suffer ing and m isery,

and hur t . I hope you are in one, or search ing for one t o be

in, we need you back. Our God is com pletely good and

desires only good for al l of us.

As Bailey and I receive your pilgrims applications and they areaccepted, w e post t he pilgri ms name on t he websit e under the

w alk w hich w as requested. Thi s serves as confir mation t hat y our

pil grim has made it o nto t he w alk. In the event that there is a

w aiti ng list or w e need further i nform ation fr om you, the sponsor

about the pilgri m, w e wil l call you and let you know .

About a month-to-six w eeks pri or t o each walk/ flight, w e send

out the tr adit ional letter s to bot h the pilgr im and the sponsor s.

The pilgrims letter gives them an overview of the times of the

w alk/ flight, i tems (such as bedding, toil etries, etc.) that the pil-grim w ill need to bri ng w ith them to the w alk/ flight. The spon-

sors letters help you to remember the times of sponsors hour,

candleli ght, cl osing, and has a form lett er w hich can be used to

get the agape letters for your pil grim .

Pay men t

Please remem ber t o w r it e a separate check fo r each pil grim you

w il l be sponsor ing. T his helps in r eturn ing the money paid in t he

event that a pi lgr im has to cancel due to an emergency. Please

note that the fees for your pil grim w ill not be deposited until the

w alk / fli ght has begun so if you w ri te a check and are w orr ied thatit has been lost because it hasnt come through your bank yet, this

is why.

Finally, w e want to r emind everyone of the im portance of com-

pleti ng appli cati ons full y and accurately. O ften ti mes, thi s is the

only w ay w e might have to contact you and/ or your pilgri m be-

for e a w alk and the infor mation pr ovided about the pilgr im is the

infor mation that is put i nto t he database. W e are w ork ing hard t o

make sur e that t he database has the most up- to -date, accurate

infor mation possibl e so that as w e prepare to fil l t eams for the

2013 season, our board and lay dir ectors wi ll the corr ect infor -

mation they need at hand to cont inue our t raditi on of buil ding

amazing teams for our pil grim s.

Al so, w hile w e understand it is someti mes hard to r each the pil-

grims pastor to get their signature on the application, please

make an effort. This signature is asked to be placed on the appli-

cation so that the pastors will know about the pilgrims upcoming

When you visit the website, youll hopefully notice the link in our

menu called Calendar and Walk Lists. Clicking this link will

take you to a page w here all of our w alk s for the curr ent year (and

the foll ow ing year once they are announced) can be found . Each

walk is given its own webpage so that we can let the community

know about that walks needs, status, and events.

For example, if you click the Mens Walk 205 page (since its the

next one coming up), at the top middle of the page youll see the

w alk dates and location fol low ed by the Lay D ir ector and Spir it ual

Directors names.

O n the right of the page you w il l fi nd a compl ete list of t he team

for this walk and below that youll see the current list of pilgrims

li sted in the order of w hich they were accepted onto the walk .

Continuing down the center, just under the walks graphic, youll

find t he Agape Dr op-off cont acts and locations. W here avail able,w e place a li nk w hich wi ll give you a map to the drop- off l oca-

tions, just incase you arent familiar with that area of town.

Next youll find information about the teams Sendoff Lunch.

W e wi ll place the date, ti me, and locati on of t he lunch as w ell as

any addit ional infor mation you mi ght need to kn ow . In the case

of MW205s lunch, the location doesnt accept credit/debit

cards, so bring cash or your check book!

U nder this you wi ll fi nd the agape needs for t he w alk. I w ork

closely with each team to obtain a copy of the clipboards we passaround at com muni ty and pl ace a li st onl ine of t he needs, w ho has

signed up for them, and what needs are left to fill. If you arent

able to make it to community or you didnt see the clipboard, you

can l ook at t hem here and send an email l ettin g us know w hat you

would be wil l ing to help with.

Prayer agape is next. T his li nk w il l t ake you to a page w here you

w ill be able to signup for the prayer vigil onli ne! This feature w ill

let us know that youve signed up AND send you a reminder

email for your notes. We tested this during the girls flight and

everyone seemed to love it so I hope youll take a moment to fillin a slot of prayer during the weekend. And Ive added a printa-

Remember

Cutoff for registration for all walks and flights are on the

T hursday befor e the walk is scheduled to begin. This gives

those making agape time to personalize things like nametags

and allows for the time needed to order specialized agape
