Hi Sky Emmaus, Midland, TX May 2012 Volume 1, Issue 5

D e C o l o r e s

Before it becomes a butterfly, a caterpillar goes through a growthstage called a “chrysalis.” On the surface it may not look like muchis happening, but t he delicate chrysalis process changes the fuzzycaterpillar into an awesome butterfly with wings of intricate designsand intense colors. The chrysalis process symbolizes how Chr ist cantransform your child, grandchild, niece, nephew or neighborhood kidinto something beyond your (and their) wildest dreams. It happenswhen one grows beyond themself, opening their life to Jesus’ powerand love.

As I thought about what I should say to encourage the Communityto sponsor a youth for our two upcoming Chrysalis Flights, the fourteenagers who committed suicide within the past several months

kept coming to my mind. I wonder, were they believers? Did theyknow they were God’s favorite? Did they know God had a plan anda purpose for them? So there you go - my answer on what to sayabout Chrysalis. Do you know a youth who is a believer? Do theyknow they’re God’s favorite? Do they know God has a plan and apurpose for them? Now, it’s our responsibility to ensure they haveall the tools they need to have that closer relationship with Christ. To be surrounded by fellow believers to help them during theirtrials. And of course serve others as they have been served. Ichallenge you or your reunion group to sponsor one youth for aFlight this summer. I know you know ONE!

An oft quoted truism is, “Leaders must be readers.” When Idecided to go to university, my mother said, “You will bestudying for the rest of your li fe. Do you want to do that?” Idid not know whether she meant her comment to be a threator a promise. As it has tur ned out, it was more than I couldhave imagined. Not only have I studi ed, but also my mindhas been reformed by the years of study. The truth of my changed mind was made clear when I readPaul’s letter to the Roman churches for about the 20 th time. “Do not be conformed to this world, but betransformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you candiscern what is the will of God – what is good, acceptableand complete.” (12.2)One talk i n our Emmaus Walks is the theme of study. Whenwe study, we offer our minds to Christ, and He renews us. Ithink of the old computer complaint, “garbage in/garbageout.” When we study, we put truth, wisdom, and faith in;and truth, wisdom, and faith comes out.” Our minds eithergrow or diminish in God’s grace. Study is ourini tiative. God gives the growth.

If you now regularly study, then praise the Lord. If not, hereis one way to begin. First, set a time for it . Second, set a limited purpose, such asto study one book of the New Testament. Third, gatherappropriate resources, such as a commentary . Third, do itfor at least 30 days, preferably 60. Study is a learned habit ,and about 30 to 60 days is required for a habit to form in themind. Study can be alone or in a group. I prefer both. The human brain is a wonder of our Lord’s creative activity,a magnificent act of grace. Study is our response to H isgrace. Chapter 4 of the Ephesian letter speaks of the renewedmind in Christ. “You were taught to put away your formerway of life, your old self… and to be renewed in the spirit of

your minds, and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God…” (Ephesians 4.22-24)

One correction about the amount ofgift agape needed at each walk. Pleasemake at least 72 pieces of any giftagape. If only 36 (or enough to coverthe pilgrims is made), the teams whowork so hard to make these the bestwalks ever wind up left out of the mix.Knowing they need just as much loveas the pilgrims, lets make enough foreveryone at each walk.

Agape Gifts don’t start and end during a walk

o Emmaus. If we only give to our brothers andsisters in Christ, are we truly giving a loving gifto honor our Lord? How can a lost world learnhe love and grace of this God we serve if we

aren’t mirroring Him here on Earth?

1 Peter 4:7-11 (from the Message) tells us,“Everything in the world is about to be wrappedup, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake inprayer. Most of all, love each other as if your lifedepended on it. Love makes up for practically any-

hing. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bedo the homeless — cheerfully. Be generous with thedifferent things God gave you, passing them aroundso all get in on it: if words, let it be God's words; ifhelp, let it be God's hearty help. That way, God'sbright presence will be evident in everythinghrough Jesus, and he'll get all the credit as theOne mighty in everything — encores to the end ofime. Oh, yes! “

Let us all take these gifts of Agape to the

wor ld we live in. I love the idea whichAmanda Siruta had during her fourth day talkat community last month. When we are hav-ing a bad day, let s go and do some selfless, loving, random act of kindness for someone. It can be a spouse, kid, str anger, whateverthe case may be, but through that act oflove, we will surely find a way past the strug-gles of life and remember that our God isbigger than the small stuff!

Remember, an act of agape love, whether itbe for the pilgrims and team of our walksand flights, or for someone on the streets ofdaily life, can be anything. A bookmark, astick of deodorant, a can of Lysol, to payingfor the meal of the person behind you in thedrive through or sending flowers to some-one who would never expect it (you wife onvalentine’s day or your anniversary doesn’t

count guys!)

These items can be found anywhere and

don’t have to cost much, if anything, finances are a concern. They simplyneed to come from the heart of a each ofus as we take just a moment to share thelove God gave and we all celebrate eachday to a soul who needs to feel love thatmoment, that day.

GIRL’S FLIGHT #49

Kyle Grove, BF #48, [email protected]’s Flight #48

n a society where government officials andpublic policy are trying to define our nation'smorals, the future can seem depressing atimes. However, as Christians, we have the

Light and Life of the Gospel, Jesus Christ. Wehave an opportunity this summer to impact theyouth of the Permian Basin by sharing God'sove with them and in turn plant seeds for theuture of our society. We can accomplish such

Kingdom work through the two Chrysalisvents this summer.

My name is Kyle Gr oves and I have been calledo serve as the Lay Director for the Guy'sChrysalis Flight #48 this summer. The Chrysa-

lis will be July 12-15th at Howard College, in BigSpring. God has called a great team for Flight#48 and we are all anxious to start our teammeetings in preparation for the Chrysalis.

In the meantime, I would like to extend an invi-tation for you to be a part of the Guy's Chrysa-lis this summer. Fir st, we need your pr ay-ers. Please pray for each team member, cater-pillar, the talks that will be given, the chapelservices, etc. Second, we need caterpil-lars. Please be thinking of teenagers that youknow - a neighbor, family member, someonefrom church, a co-worker's kid. Please remem-ber that a youth must be at least 15 years old,

or have completed their freshman year of highschool, and can be up to 19 years old in orderto attend a Chrysalis. Third, sign up for gift andfood agape. Please be looking for our clip-

boards at the next Community Meeting and signup for some agape needs.

Our youth are important in determining theoutcome of future generations and so I wouldlike to leave you with the following chal-lenge. Let's make an investment in the futuretoday by doing the three things I mentionedabove to support the Guy's Chrysalis: (1) pray,(2) identify potential caterpillars, (3) preparefood/gift agape.
