Edward De Bono’s six thinking hats

• Action and problem solving in a 1h meeting

• Edward De Bono’s ‘6 thinking hats’ tool allows

a group to look at a topic from a variety of

perspectives (instead of here is the problem,

this is the solution).

• By wearing different hats we can direct our

thinking in specific ways.

Edward De Bono’s six thinking hats

• We give 4 minutes to each hat. Avoids prematurely jumping to a negative conclusion, or making a subjective decision without sufficient information

• Everyone must wear the same hat at the same time

• Someone must scribe and someone must keep time – time keeper and note taker

• We have some topics to cover or you can do your own

• This is the sequence:

First green hat – using fresh eyes

• See the issue through the eyes of someone else – what matters to them? What do they need?

• Draw a random profession out of the envelope and spend a minute on it – do this four times

• Use these ideas as a stepping stone onto a new green hat – now focusing back on the issue
