uor or a cocktail has approximately 40 grams, a quarter liter of wine 30 grams and a quarter liter of beer 15 grams). Al-coholism seems to be produced by the combination of various physiological, psychological and genetic factors. It is characterized by an emotional and some-times organic dependence, produces progressive cerebral damages and ulti-mately leads to death.
The first symptoms of the alcoholism are very subtle. They may consist of a concern for the availability of alcohol in the first place. These often have an in-fluence on who we associate with, our choice of activities, as well as a change in the state of mind. The chemical impact of alcohol influences almost all our bod-ily cells, including those of the central nervous system. The brain interacts with nerve centers responsible for the pleas-ure and other desirable sensations; after prolonged exposure to alcohol, the brain adapts to the changes this produces and becomes dependent on it.
Further below I am writing a bit more about issues problems caused by the consumption of alcohol:
Nearly 200.000 deaths annually may be completely or partially attributed to drinking and the average life expec-tancy is reduced by about 10 to 12 years. Other issues are overdosing (with mor-tal consequences), accidents, violence, heart problems, increased blood pres-sure, irreversible mental and neurologi-cal disorders, liver pain and damages (among them, cirrhosis, a destructive liver disease), gastric or duodenal ulcers,
pancreatitis (serious infection of the pancreas), diarrhea, hemorrhoids, osteo-porosis, muscle pains and swelling, de-creased bodily defense (susceptibility to infections), sexual impotence, decreased blood sugar (particularly dangerous for diabetics), poor nutrition, anemia, in-creased or decreased effectiveness of medical drugs in conjunction with alco-hol resulting in unwanted side-effects, fetal injuries during pregnancy, economic difficulties, psychological family traumas and an endless number of problems in a multitude of areas.
There exist many treatments in “sup-port” of alcoholism but, nevertheless, they only help addressing the symptoms,
anxieties, symptoms of abstinence, vi-tamin deficiencies and the aid in the de-terioration of the physical and mental state. The only thing which really helps, though, is voluntary abstinence deter-mined by effective self-control, supervi-sion, and very importantly, psychological help by families, loved ones, and self-help groups.
