Introduction
The Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) is a platform-independent, distributed, object-oriented,
interactive system for creating binary software components. The Distributed Component Object Model
(DCOM) allows applications to be distributed across locations. The DCOM wire protocol ensures
transparency and provides support for reliable, secure, and efficient communication between COM
components.
For more information, please refer to "Component Object Model" on Microsoft's website.
Why these Settings?
GeoGraphix Discovery uses a peer-to-peer model for communication. What this means is that all systems, regardless of the operating system type, are both clients and servers. Such changes are required to be made to any machine that will operate as a server.
Symptoms this Document Applies To
• GeoGraphix Discovery users can view the project server under Network in ProjectExplorer while
logged in to the workstation but cannot view details by clicking on the plus sign adjacent to it.
Note: Domain Authentication or Workgroup User Name and Password Distribution have already been
addressed. The GeoGraphix Project Home folder, NTFS folder and file permissions are set up
appropriately and are correct.
• If GeoGraphix Discovery users at the workstations cannot view the project server at all, then
either the Windows Firewall or a third party security software program at the client workstation
is blocking access to the project server and requires configuration, and/or the revisions of
Discovery in the GeoGraphix environment do not match.
