Mayflower Compact• In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal

Subjects of our dread Sovereigne Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britaine, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first colony in the Northerne Parts of Virginia; doe, by these Presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civill Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equall Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meete and convenient for the Generall Good of the Colonie; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience.

Main Idea

• The Mayflower Compact was the first form of written legislation for the pilgrims.

Point of View

• The pilgrims needed to leave Europe to escape religious prosecution. They came up with the mayflower compact to ensure their religious freedoms.

Inferences

• This was the first form of religious movement from Europe about religious prosecution.

• The compact was the first form of government for the pilgrims.

Kentucky Resolution• That this state having by its Convention, which ratified the federal

Constitution, expressly declared, that among other essential rights, "the Liberty of Conscience and of the Press cannot be cancelled, abridged, restrained, or modified by any authority of the United States," and from its extreme anxiety to guard these rights from every possible attack of sophistry or ambition, having with other states, recommended an amendment for that purpose, which amendment was, in due time, annexed to the Constitution; it would mark a reproachable inconsistency, and criminal degeneracy, if an indifference were now shewn, to the most palpable violation of one of the Rights, thus declared and secured; and to the establishment of a precedent which may be fatal to the other.

Main Idea

• The resolutions opposed the alien and sedition acts and gave more power to the federal government.

Point of View

• The resolutions declared that the Constitution established a compact between the states and that the federal government had no right to exercise powers not specifically delegated to it under the terms of the compact

Inferences

• 1798• Gave the states more federal power over the

states."The particular phraseology of the Constitution of the United States confirms and strengthens the principle, supposed to be essential to all written constitutions, that a law repugnant to the Constitution is void; and that courts, as well as other departments, are bound by that instrument.”

Reagan’s Inaugural Address

• "It is not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work -- work with us, not over us; stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it. This Administration's objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy. "

Main Idea

• America was in tough times due to the cold war era occuring.

Point of View

• Reagan wanted to rally America and unite the people and build the country economically.

Inferences

• The tension between the Soviets and America were growing.

• The nuclear bomb was a huge threat on both countries.

• Soviets believed that the people didn’t need freedoms, where the USA believed people needed their freedoms. This made the two different parties disagree with each other.

Meat Inspection Act 1906

Main Idea

• The meat inspection act required the United States Department of Agriculture to inspect all cattle, sheep, goats, and horses when slaughtered and processed into products for human consumption.

Point of View

• Upton Sinclair brought about a revolt in the meat packing industries and revealed all of the flaws in the companies.

Inference

• The meat was so bad for people and nobody knew what the meat really was.

• Upton Sinclair was a man who spoke his mind and didn’t care what people thought.

• Upton wanted people to know how bad the meat packing industries were.

Marbury vs. Madison

Main Idea

• This case brought about the Judicial Review in the court systems.

Point of View

• John Marshall decided that the courts needed judicial review to be more accurate.

Inferences

• First time the court has declared something unconstitutional.

• The court decision was in 1803.
